Napa firefighters battled a small grass fire on the grounds of Syar Industries Inc. Sunday afternoon. The fire was reported at 4:03 p.m., and burned about a quarter of an acre. Flames engulfed what CalFire described as an outbuilding as well as brush.

Crews managed to keep the fire away from a large propane tank at Syar and contained the blaze with the use of aircraft. The cause of the fire is under investigation. Napa City, Napa County and CalFire fire crews all responded to the fire.
Throughout Sunday, Napans may have seen or smelled smoke from fires burning in Solano and Petaluma counties. CalFire personnel battled a 10-acre brush fire in Rockville Hill Park at Rockville Road, Fairfield, Sunday evening as well as a 50-acre brush fire that burned along Highway 101, south of Petaluma according to CalFire.

" NVR ::::: dual "

" Duel: A struggle for domination between two contending persons, groups, or ideas.

A prearranged, formal combat between two persons, usually fought to settle a point of honor.

I don't think it's the NVR that's wrong. Dual would mean they were fighting two fires. "

" Dual: Double, Twin
Duel: Contest, Fight, Battle

Duel, although not the best choice of words for this article, is the correct spelling. And I even live in the 3rd World Country of Napa. "

" would you have liked "firefighters fight" than duel? I think duel is an elegant word for that is not often used..... "

" Gypsy, are you suggesting that they also changed the headline on the thousands of print copies that circulated this morning. Perhaps a grammar lesson wouldn't hurt. "

Selim wrote on Jul 28, 2008 1:30 PM:

" Samaker, maybe gypsy is suggesting that someone at the NVR go ahead and BUY A DICTIONARY. Sure, they changed the headline for the online edition, but a basic junior high school spelling error is inexcusable, especially when the local paper is the face of the town for thousands of tourists who find their free copy outside their hotel doors.

I'd like to put it up to a vote that the NVR can NOT report on any local education stories until it proves that it can go one week without a basic spelling mistake. Otherwise, it's just people in glass houses...

NVR's lesson for the day: Just because your word processor's spell check doesn't highlight the error, it doesn't mean that it's correct.

But as an aside, thanks to the firefighters. You're doing a GREAT JOB! "

gypsy wrote on Jul 28, 2008 4:27 PM:

" Samaker, the online version of the headline last night (not the corrected version this morning) read, "Firefighters battle duel brush fires at Syar." They fixed it before the print version came out this morning. Just FYI. "

" The Napa Valley Register is more guilty of poor headline choices than they are of grammatical and spelling errors. The commenters make numerous errors daily, and they have the benefit of spell check! "
