Command performance

With apologies to Humphrey Bogart: Of all the daily newspapers in all the little towns in all of the country, he walks into ours.

The Supreme Court and our unalienable rights

It’s a real shame, as the L.A. Times laments (“The Right to Bear Arms,” Napa Valley Register guest editorial, June 28) that the recent gun-control decision “needlessly complicates the lives of legislators seeking to bring gun violence under control.”

Candidates are gonna be blogging here

Finding information about candidates or topics during election time is easier with the Internet available. We are going to use napavalleyregister.com to make this November’s election as easy as possible to learn all you want about each race on your ballot.

The revenge of Paris

In the history and lore of the Napa Valley as a wine lover’s Xanadu, the Paris Tasting of 1976 has taken on mythical status.

Who cut the scenery on Scenic?

Dear editor, Short of a disease, what brain surgeons cut the trees on Scenic south of the Scenic/Linda Mesa Way intersection?

Keep horses off our streets

Dear editor, I am very concerned that a proposal to allow horse-drawn carriages on Napa’s streets is being considered. In New York City last year, a horse pulling a carriage was spooked by a street performer, crashed into a tree and died. Unfortunately, accidents with horse-drawn carriages happen periodically with the horse being the big loser.

A careful reading of Second Amendment

Dear editor, The framers of the Second Amendment carefully circumscribed the right to bear arms within the controls and supervisory oversight of “a well-regulated militia.” They devoted half of the amendment’s wording to this limitation. Their intent is clear from the inclusion of the words “well-regulated.” The right was not assigned to any casual group of individuals but reserved for militia members under discipline.

Enough already with the complaining

Dear editor, I would like to ask all of the folks whining and complaining about the Fourth of July parade to get up and do something about it. Volunteer. Offer to help. Do something. The complaining is far worse than the parade could have ever been.

American Canyon's Urban Limit Line

This week I read the agreement between the county and American Canyon concerning American Canyon’s borders and other related issues. I advise anyone who is going to vote on it in American Canyon, and anyone in the county who is concerned about growth issues to take a close look at it. There are some issues that trouble me about it, and I can certainly say that it is a pro growth document.

Prop 8: Are you yes or no on banning same-sex marriage?

Proposition 8, the "Limit on Marriage, Constitutional Amendment," on the November ballot, calls for an amendment to the state constitution, declaring that marriage can only be between a man and a woman.
