NOTES AND QUOTES for a Sunday in the Napa Valley:

No. 1 seed Danielle Mirda of Napa recently won the San Marin Junior Open in Novato, defeating three opponents without dropping a set on the way to the tennis title.
Mirda, 13, had wins over Diana Karakoulka of Foster City (6-2, 6-2) in the quarterfinals, Bethany Duval of Redding (6-3, 6-2) in the semifinals, and Chelsea Hayash of Mill Valley (6-4, 6-3) in the finals.

Mirda, who will be an eighth grader at St. John’s Catholic School in the fall, has a counter punching style and has added the ability to attack short balls and finish points at the net, according to her coach, Jay Dixon.
“Dani is still somewhat holding back from getting too involved in all competitive aspects of the game, but her strokes are developing well,” said Dixon. “Her serve, which has given her problems in the past, has really picked up.

“She is certainly within striking distance of reaching the top 10 in Northern California 14’s if she wants it.”

Quad Cities third baseman Brett Wallace, a Justin-Siena High School graduate, was 3-for-3 with a double and triple in the River Bandits’ 5-2 Class A Midwest League win over Burlington Thursday at Modern Woodmen Park in Davenport, Iowa.

Wallace was a first-round pick of the St. Louis Cardinals.

Matt Yourkin, who went to Napa High, has pitched well in relief in his last two appearances for the Class AA Carolina Mudcats.

The left-hander gave up one hit, walked one and struck out one in two innings in a 5-3 Southern League loss to Birmingham.

He pitched one inning, allowing one hit, walking one and striking out two in a 9-5 win over Mississippi.

The Mudcats, based in Zebulon, N.C., are the Double-A affiliate of the Florida Marlins.

Yourkin is in his fifth year in the Marlins organization. He has also pitched in Albuquerque, N.M., Greensboro, N.C., Jamestown, N.Y., and Jupiter, Fla.

Lackey is a former Vintage High and Portland State star who has played professionally in Finland, Switzerland and Turkey.

He was a two-time First-Team All-Big Sky Conference selection for Portland State and went over the 1,000-point career scoring mark while also breaking the Vikings’ career steals record.

Lackey was chosen All-Monticello Empire League three straight years and was the league and Napa County MVP as a senior for the Crushers.

Dr. David Goodwill, a Napa driver and last year’s Northern California Modifieds Association Rookie of the Year, won the 30-lap main event at Altamont Motorsports Park in Tracy last Saturday.

Driving the Lito Auto Body No. 3 and starting in the last row, Goodwill moved to the front and sailed in and out of lap traffic to take the checkered flag and win his first pavement main event.

Goodwill, who also had the second-fastest time, is the points leader.
