Vintage’s Steen has two interceptions, Justin-Siena’s Meyer has one for West

The East All-Stars wasted no time Saturday night atoning for their predecessors’ shutout loss in last year’s East-West Charity All-Star Football Classic.
Vanden-Travis Air Force Base product Willie Pitts scored his third touchdown of the game early in the third quarter and the East went on to win 27-7.
In the 36th version of the annual summer showcase of just-graduated senior standouts at Napa Memorial Stadoum, the East — blanked last year 12-0 by the West — scored on its first two possessions en route to a 19-7 halftime lead.
In a showcase featuring the top recent graduates from Napa, Solano and Yolo counties, the East took the opening kickoff and drove 58 yards to the end zone in just six plays. Pitts capped the drive with a four-yard run around the left side of line with 10:25 remaining in the first quarter. The extra point was no good.
On the ensuing kickoff, the East recovered a pooch kick at the West 37-yard line and scored seven plays later, on a one-yard run by Pitts. Quarterback Michael Johnson of Rodriguez-Cordelia kept for the two-point conversion and a 14-0 lead with 7:50 left in the opening quarter.
Vintage product Travis Steen stopped the East’s scoring binge by snagging a pair of interceptions. On a cold and windy evening, the teams combined for seven turnovers in the first half — including six interceptions. Chris Meyer of Justin-Siena added another West interception in the third quarter.
The East made it 17-0 with 10:01 left in the second quarter on a 35-yard field goal by Esparto graduate Lupe Amezcua. The East had marched from its own 38 to the West 16 before facing a fourth-and-9.
The West gave up a safety less than a minute later when, with the ball at his own 17, Enrique DeJesus of Benicia stepped out back of endzone while purused by East defenders, making it 19-0.
The West finally got on the board with 1:11 left in the half. Quarterback Boy Humphries, from Benicia, capped a 45-yard, four-play drive with a two-yard keeper. The extra point by Chris Pereira of Jesse Bethel was good.
In the third quarter, Vacaville’s David Taub intercepted a Humphries pass and returned it to the West 1. Pitts scored on one-yard run with 8:51 to go in third. Andrew Smith of Davis had the two-point conversion run.
West head coach Richard Eaton is a Napa resident and the offensive coordinator at Armijo-Fairfield. The East head coach was David Fishleigh of Rodriguez-Cordelia, which tied for the Solano County Athletic Conference title last year and then beat Bethel-Vallejo for the Sac-Joaquin title, 42-13.
Graduates of Napa, Vintage, Justin-Siena, St. Helena, Calistoga, Vallejo, Bethel, Hogan, North Hills Christian, John Swett, Benicia and St. Patrick-St. Vincent were on the West roster. Players from Davis, Woodland, Pioneer, Wood, Armijo, Dixon, Vacaville, Rodriguez, Winters, Fairfield, Rio Vista, Esparto and Vanden were on the East roster.
The game was co-sponsored by the Kiwanis Club of Greater Napa and the Vallejo Police Activities League.
Kiwanis Club of Greater Napa gives to the following charities in the area: Salvation Army-Healthy Mom and Babies, Plasticos Foundation, Camp Coomps, Napa Track Club, Parents Can, Child Spree, Key Clubs at Vintage High School and New Tech, 5K run with Napa Valley Marathon, Special Olympics, Habitat for Humanity, Boy Scouts, Lighthouse for the Blind.
