Jeanette Pometta had a front-row seat for the presidential motorcade. Her front yard faces Oakville Grade.

“I’m not exactly here to show support. We Democrats are in the minority,” she said Pometta, 72, with a chuckle. “I’m not here to protest. I might yell boo as he drives by.”
Inez Pometta, 74, was on the other side of the political fence and made no bones about it. “I’m here to support the Republicans.”

She staked out a spot in her front yard at about 1:30 p.m., making sure she had a great view when President George W. Bush sped past.
“The last time President Bush was here he flew over the house in a helicopter. I waved at him, but don’t think he waved back,” Inez Pometta said.

The Pometta family, with deep roots in Oakville, for years ran the Pometta Deli next door to their home at the corner of Highway 29 and Oakville Grade.
Julien Pometta, 7, said he will have something exciting to talk about he goes back to school in the fall. He said he has never seen a president before. “It’s pretty cool.”

The Shore family from Florida arrived in Napa the same day as President Bush. It was a coincidence. Brett Shore, 14, his sister Stephanie Shore, 16, and their parents were enjoying the first day of their vacation in the Napa Valley when they came upon the presidential motorcade.

Brett Shore said his parents were wine tasting up the hill at Diamond Oaks when they were told President Bush was on his way to Harlan Estate Winery for a GOP fundraiser. The Pomettas invited the vacationers to take a seat in their yard for the presidential visit.

“This is our first day here. We just got lucky,” said Stephanie Shore. “We picked the right day to come here.”

She was hoping to see President Bush’s face as the motorcade sped by.

Brett Shore said this isn’t the first time the family had an unexpected surprise on their family vacation.

Two years ago the family was vacationing in Canada when they walked out the backdoor of their vacation spot and stumbled upon a movie set. “Me and my sister got to be extras in the movie,” he added.

“Seeing the president is more exciting,” said Stephanie Shore.

Cheryl Phelps pulled her white mini-van onto the shoulder of Highway 29 to see what all the commotion was about.

Phelps, vacationing with her family from Birmingham, Ala., was  happy to cross paths with the president.

“I’m proud to be a Republican,” Phelps said. “I’m a hard-core Republican.”

After about 20 minutes and a quick family conference, the Phelps family decided to take off for Sacramento, the next leg of their vacation.

Suddenly, the chopping noise of several helicopters filled the air.

At about 5:20 p.m., officers stopped all traffic on Highway 29 between Oakville Cross Road and Oakville Grade. For the next half hour CHP officers and sightseers waited for President Bush’s motorcade.

Northbound traffic came to a stand still, stretching back to Brix Restaurant.

With the absence of traffic, the only noise came from a banner — advertising the corner deli — flapping in the wind.

In less than two minutes a flotilla of black SUVs with tinted windows came speeding by, and it was all over.

" His Helecopter flew over and I flipped him the bird. I hope he saw it. "

" Hey NR thanks again for glorifying the tax wasters of our community. As per usual, constructive journalism! "

" I wonder who paid for Air Force One to fly across country for a RNC fundraiser? That should certainly come out of the $850K he helped raise. I wouldn't pay a nickel to shake this guy's hand. Coming to "view California wildfire damage" was a pathetic pretext, as if Bush could care and that would make any difference. But, it is consistent with his pattern of abuse of office. Only 186 days left... "

" I am so tired of hearing/seeing all of the horrible things about Bush. I don't care if there is not one person out there who is happy with the results of his term in office. The man has an awesome responsibility as the President of this country and whether his decisions of been right or wrong, he deserves respect for shouldering that responsibility for the last eight years. We as Americans are never going to be unanimously happy with any given person in office. Regardless, their job is by no means easy, restful, or peaceful and they deserve respect. If the man never set foot in Napa or bothered to survey the fire disaster, the same people would be complaining he didn't care. You have no business criticizing something you know nothing about. "

" Well, the Register didn't disappoint. By page 5, they managed to get in an article with headlines reading Ms. Pelosi calls Bush a "total failure". I knew it would be too good to be true that we could have the POTUS visit the valley and the Register wouldn't get in the obligatory shot. How proud you must be to be so "fair and balanced" "

" I too am getting pretty tired of the Bush haters...at least the man has principles ...and he has given it his all...
As far as taxpayers' paying for his trip to Napa...that is chicken feed compared to what we will be paying for the CongressionaL Delegation going to Iraq for Obama's photo op..!
That is truly sickening...! "

" Google Bill Clinton's Travel Expenses and then complain. We waved politely as the helicopters passed over our home. "

" srnitnw: right on.
urte: So true
cab e-girl: nice gesture
chunk: That is your right of expression.. See, no matter what you think of the man who sits in the office or the actions that has been taken by them, everyone has there own expression of their feelings, as guaranteed by the US Constitution. Isn't nice that the President of the United States makes decisions upholding and defending those precious papers so that we may express our opinions freely and not be hung or shot in the street as in many places in the world. Just a few short years in a country called Iraq, that was a mainstream idea, kill those who dissented. Now, there are peaceful demonstrations throughout Baghdad, and people are not being shot for it.... A just war?? Maybe not, but not my call to make.... but I do know that the faces of the people here in Baghdad are much happier than they were pre-2003. "
