A wrong-way driver who caused a head-on crash on Saturday seriously injuring  himself and another driver was involved in a separate crash just minutes before.

Jose Luis Lopez-Manguia, 31, of San Pablo and Robert Long, 88, of Napa both suffered major injuries. Lopez-Manguia was airlifted to Santa Rosa Memorial Hospital where he was in stable condition, a hospital spokeswoman said on Tuesday.
Long was taken by ambulance to Queen of the Valley Medical Center.

Around 7:30 p.m., Sunday, Lopez-Manguia drove his 1995 Plymouth north in southbound lanes on Highway 29 between Imola Avenue and Old Sonoma Road, according to the California Highway Patrol. He crashed his car head on into a southbound pickup driven by Long, CHP Officer Jaret Paulson said.
Just moments before the crash, Lopez-Manguia was involved in a hit-and-run accident on Freeway Drive that caused some property damage, Paulson said.

Paulson said Lopez-Manguia does not have a valid driver’s license or insurance.
“We are also investigating if alcohol was a factor in the accident,” he said.

" No license or insurance, hit and run, and probably was under the influence, hope this guy gets some serious jail time if he pulls through. I feel bad for MR. Long hope hes ok. "

" Anybody see the recurring theme among the hit and run drivers in Napa? "

" Nice..... was the Plymouth white and involved in any other hit and runs lately? "

" SouthNapa, its not just happening in Napa, its happening all over the state. I work in claims and cannot tell you how many losses we take that involve unlicensed/uninsured drivers. Its sickening. "

" Common theme? Sure, they hit something/someone and then drive off. "

" I could say a lot of things about these comments posted here, but for now I will hold my tongue. I just think that us law-abiding citizens are getting tired of the double-standard we see. It does not matter whether hispanic or white, I hear complaints from both at work. Where I live no one has insurance. I have had 6 cars hit in 10 years here. The people just ask "how much" and then you have to follow them while they go to many people's houses and get the money to pay you, if you call the cops they do nothing unless someone has been hurt. Court is a joke! I agree with psychochik. It is just how far our quality of life has degraded in CA unfortunately. "

You proved my point. Thank you. "

" This is why they should have pay at the pump insurance. Then everyone who drives is insured. The more you drive the more you pay. "

" Wait..........we should be patient with this new American citizen. Show the world what a good example we are and those chilling words at the base of the Statue of Liberty are not hollow. Provide him with remedial driver education, free; education, housing, sustinence and bring his relatives to this country. This is what America is about. "

psychochik wrote on Jul 16, 2008 9:56 AM:

" Napa Walker, we actually do pay more the more we drive. Ever wonder why insurance companies ask for your annual mileage ?? The more you drive, the more a liability you are and therefore are charged accordingly. "

" Sounds like attempted suicide.

With all those people watching from the bridge - no pictures? "

Napa Walker wrote on Jul 16, 2008 5:24 PM:

" psychochik, you are right about the insurance companies charging more the more you drive but the catch is first you have to have insurance. If you had to pay at the pump everyone that drives a car would be paying insurance. "

" Let's see if the Register has the guts to run a follow-up about his immigration status. Bet not. Might make Napa look bad. "

kobe57 wrote on Jul 17, 2008 12:48 PM:

" Aside from the fact the driver was uninsured and unlicensed, he was driving under the influence. What should happen to him if he survives? And how does Mr. Long come to terms with almost losing his life, a vehicle destroyed, and the pain and suffering? "

" Waiting to hear updates on the head on highway 29 crash from last Sunday-how are both drivers? Comments from lawyers would be good-what happens with drivers uninsured/unlicensed? Also, did this driver have any priors? Waiting for more comments.... "
