A new name and a school merger are not the only changes currently taking place at Trinity Prep.

On Thursday, the private, independent Catholic school — which now goes by the full name of Kolbe Academy and Trinity Prep — announced coaching changes and additions to its athletics staff.
After four years of coaching the boy’s basketball team, John Streett will move over and coach the girls squad for the 2008-2009 season.

Last year’s girls basketball coach, Sal Alvarez, will now head up the boys programs in both basketball and soccer.
Along with the switch in basketball coaches, Trinity Prep will be offering girls volleyball this fall.

Jacinta Sheetz has been tapped to lead the program back on the court for the first time since 2005.
Athletic director Bob Greene is thrilled about his newly designed coaching staff.

“The three individuals we are talking about fit well into what we want from a coach. Each has an understanding of the particular sport they are coaching, as well as grasp of the importance of positively representing Trinity in the community,” Greene said.

“John and Sal are both outstanding basketball coaches who have a passion for Trinity Athletics. Jacinta (Sheetz) will be teaching on campus, which is always an advantage for coaches and I feel the girls will really enjoy working with her.”

There is a new excitement in the air surrounding Trinity athletics, thanks in large part to the recent merger of Kolbe Academy and Trinity Grammar and Prep.

The merger — along with efforts to increase enrollment — has brought the total number of high school students to nearly 50, after completing last semester with just 30 ninth through twelfth graders, according to Greene.

The increase in enrollment means the opportunity to compete in sports such as volleyball and girls soccer, which the school was unable to offer last year.

Moreover, a larger pool of athletes should increase the size of rosters.

Trinity also plans on maintaining its multi-campus agreement with Calvary Baptist Academy of American Canyon.

Kolbe Academy and Trinity Prep is a pre K-12 private Catholic school that offers students a classical education, with small class sizes in a family environment.

Kolbe Academy and Trinity Prep offers programs in art, music, and drama, while competing athletically at the varsity level in the Northern Pacific Athletic Conference of the Sac-Joaquin Section under the California Interscholastic Federation.
