A Napa driver passing over a double-yellow line plowed head on into an oncoming car Thursday morning, injuring four people, one seriously.

The crash, which also involved a Caltrans truck, happened around 8:15 a.m. Thursday on Monticello Road (Highway 121) four miles north of Vichy Avenue.
The accident closed the highway for about two hours while crews carted off torn and twisted cars parts from the roadway.

Nataliya Kopilow, 30, of Napa was northbound up the hill when she attempted to pass a Caltrans three-axle dump truck pulling a trailer loaded with a tractor, California Highway Officer Jaret Paulson said.
When Kopilow crossed the double-yellow line into the southbound lane, her Ford Taurus slammed head on into a Dodge Dynasty driven by Chad Godoy, 31, of Woodland, Paulson said. “The Taurus then hit the Caltrans truck.”

Kopilow had two passengers — Benny Smith and a man identified only as Tom, both 62, of Napa. Kopilow and the men suffered moderate injuries, Paulson said.
Firefighters had to use the Jaws of Life to free the victims from the Taurus.

The driver of the Caltrans truck, Daniel Schnapp, 42, of Napa was not hurt, Paulson said.

Godoy suffered major injuries. An air ambulance was initially called to airlift Godoy from the scene, but was later canceled.

Emergency crews took all of the injured by ground ambulance to Queen of the Valley Medical Center, Paulson said.

“When I was at the hospital, Mr. Godoy was conscious and talking,” he said on Thursday afternoon. “When I left all the victims were still at the Queen.

“From what we have gathered so far, it looks as if none of the people in the Taurus were wearing seat belts,” Paulson said.

Paulson said it does not appear that alcohol played a part in the crash. “We will be investigating the driver of the Taurus for unsafe passing,” he said.

I hope everyone recovers from their injuries soon!! "

" There are also a number of turn outs that are frequently ignored. If you have someone behind you, you should use the turn outs! I'm not sure if that was an issue here, but I've driven this road a lot and it's very rare to see someone actually use a turn out when they are holding up traffic. "

SouthNapa wrote on Jul 10, 2008 4:51 PM:

" A slow driver refusing to turnout is NOT an excuse for crossing a double yellow line, particularly on that stretch of 121. People fly up and down that road all the time. All it takes is for somebody to cross into incoming traffic on a curve and a head on crash can occur. I hope all the victims, and particularly Mr. Godoy make it. "

He was passing them on the right side one by one and I was in disbelief of how dangerous he was being. Should we call CHP in instances like this? Maybe so. Would it prevent a moron from doing something stupid? Probably not. Driving is a privilege that should not be given to so many people. It gets taken for granted. "

With the price of oil, one would think there would be some incentive in slowing down. Not to mention, there are lots of beer cans strewn along 121. The highway patrol is doing the best they can, the only thing that would make sense is to dramatically increase the speeding fine. How does $2500 sound? "

" I too live at the lake and make this commute every day. Passing on this road is quite frankly insane, and as it affects the rest of us on the road, criminal. I don't know how long this driver was behind the Caltrans vehicle before it attempted this idiotic manuever; however, we need to remember with large vehicles like rvs and trucks w/trailers that not all of the turn-outs will accommodate these vehicles, before we start getting huffy and too impatient. At the same time, the vast majority of drivers on this road do not even pause to consider using turn-outs. It's the most infurating thing to those of us on the road who are able to, and would like to, be permitted to at least drive the speed limit when you are not able to do it yourself. We try to be patient, wait for you to notice us stuck behind you and use the available turn-outs, and when that doesn't work we lay on our horns to let you know we are there - still nothing. There is no consideration for others at all, while you play God of the road, deciding which road rules you want to fallow, ignoring all of the signs that slower traffic use turn-outs, and have the gull to decide whether or not where I am going is important. Those of you doing this have no idea where we are going or how important that destination is - there is nothing like being in labor and trying to get to the hospital while stuck behind someone who will not pull over, or decides to slow down even more, or repeatedly slam on their brakes as we try not to run into them. These people are dangerous too. "

My well wishes to all the affected parties. This type of incident makes me dislike that road. Its a favorite of mine if I want some good switchbacks and a soothing pace, but people crossing over yellows cuz they blew a turn or because they want to pass make me nervous.

Is it winter yet ??? "

Actually, I've seen about a hundred times more people who don't use the turn-outs than I have seen people passing on the double-yellow line. So we should take that $2500 and multiply it by 100 and then the $250,000 fine will be a suitable deterrent to people not pulling over.

But for the kid who left his popsicle wrapper on my lawn yesterday, I think $2500 is sufficient. Plus court costs, of course. "

To the people whose lives were impacted in this accident, I assumed that it went without saying that people wish you well. Sometimes, humor is my best medicine, and I'm sorry if my humor test was so poorly written that it caused some people to fail the humour test.

However, It is very rare for bicycles to 'pull over' to help car drivers out. Why is this?
This Caltrans driver was just doing his job in the right way. Sometimes you are behind a big rig on Monticello and there is nothing to be done, you know he/she doesn't like it either. Put on some music and chill. Most will turnout when they have a chance to do so. There are only a few turnouts on Monticello big enough to take this rig, obviously, she did not know where they are, or was not prepared to wait. "

All because this woman felt her time was more important then someones life. He is facing at least one month in the hospital and four month in a cast. He will have to learn how to walk again. Who is going to support his wife and newborn daughter? Who is going to save their home from foreclosure when there is no money to pay the bills? The only silver lining in this story is that the woman at fault is lucky he was trying to save money on gas. He chose to drive the little car instead of his huge full size truck. " Joe, if you are impeding traffic, the law says you are supposed to move over. Whether you are going the speed limit or not does not matter according to the law. There are different criteria for different situations ( mountain roads and multi-lane freeways, for example ), but I have never found any reference that indicates anything other than 'slower' and 'impeding'. Obviously, you shouldn't drive over your abilities if you are unable to get your vehicle into a turnout.

You are correct when you say that most of those turnouts are too small to fit into for a 3-axle truck pulling a long flatbed. And if you CAN get into one, by slowing down you've guaranteed that even MORE people will be stuck behind you soon because now you're going even slower.

Hearing the details of Mr. Godoy's injuries really drive home the consequences of dangerous driving so much more than just reading a simple standard two-word description that are usually in these sad articles ( rightly so, because of privacy concerns ), and I wish more people could be reached and impressed with how bad these things really are. Yet, the people who are always in such a frenetic hurry on the roads probably don't have time to read the paper, anyway. "

To those of you who claim the excuse that you do not need to comply with the posted signs directing slower traffic to use turnouts becuase you are doing the speed limit, please be honest with yourself and the rest of us. The speed limit on that road is 55mph. No one, and I do not care how many people would like to object right now and go on about their excellent driving skills, but no one can successfully drive the speed limit along most of that road. There are several areas where cautionary signs suggesting a safe speed during adverse weather or other conditions exist; however, the speed limit remains 55 even in those areas. Moreover, the majority of turnouts are located in areas where you cannot possibly be doing the speed limit, effectively eliminating your well-contrived excuse for not pulling over when you are in fact "slower traffic". I also do not know of any law that entitles drivers to disregard traffic laws in favor of their fuel consumption. "

Those of you who want to rant about turnouts and speed limits are simpletons. No excuse for crossing a double line! No excuse. Plain and simple. A double line IS a double line. No one is trying to excuse what this driver did or diminish in any way the horrific tragedy that has befallen Chad and his family as a result. This story simply naturally lead to a tangent conversation in this blog about the use of turnouts on this road. The fact is, the Caltrans driver was preparing to utilize the turnout just ahead of where this accident took place, but the person behind him did not give him the chance.

The conversation about turnouts has nothing whatsoever to do with opinions about this particular accident. However, just as there is no excuse for crossing a double line or not being able to comprehend the six words a first grader could read "DO NOT CROSS A DOUBLE LINE", there is also no excuse for not utilizing turnouts or comprehending the four words "SLOWER TRAFFIC USE TURNOUTS." Again this has nothing to do with Chad's accident or excusing the other driver. I believe we are all entitled to use this forum to share our opinions and feelings and the subject just happens to naturally relate to this story.

Warm thoughts are with Chad and his family. "
