Napa’s Independence Day Celebration may have been fun and games for most, but Ray-Ray the Chihuahua/terrier mix from the Napa County Animal Shelter had a job to do: Find a new family.

“He’s gotten some interest today already,” Rob Zerby said, a Napa Humane volunteer showing off Ray-Ray.
Behind him was Napa Humane’s mobile adoption unit — an RV full of animals — on hand to show off two dogs, six cats and three rabbits.

Nearby, Napa Firefighter Jerry Snowden let kids and their parents check out Napa’s Truck 1, easily identifiable with its American flag paint job.
“We led the parade,” Snowden said.

The event had a flash of a parade around 1 p.m., with a handful of vehicles.
Across the way six-and-a-half-year-old Andrew Oliva was busy conquering the rock climbing tower. He slapped a red buzzer at the top, letting out a siren sound. Back safely on the ground, Oliva said he’s an old hand at rock climbing towers, having conquered them at school fairs and Rockzilla.

Why must he climb?

To get to the top, of course.

“It makes a cool noise,” he said.

Several yards away, Aaron and Kathy Haynes’s pooches Lucy and Tanner were sitting tight inside their plastic wagon, watching a healthy crowd mingle among vendors selling everything from palm readings to beer.

“This is the first time we tried a wagon,” Aaron said, adding the shy Tanner was still warming up to the idea of being in public.

" I agree Dirty Napkin,,talk about a dog for adoption..where's his picture?
What a joke of a article. "

" What's sad was the festival itself. Just within the past few years, the festival stretched along First, Third, Brown, and Main Streets, and there were lots of things for kids to do. Now there were a half-dozen vendor booths and two Clydesdale horses for photo ops. PB&Js/Rockzilla provided the only kids' entertainment. Pathetic. "

" I think that this picture shows everyone involved in the parade. What a JOKE!!!!! no offense to those involved but a parade is usually a little bigger and longer than what was displayed yesterday. What happened?????? By the way, did anyone experience the traffic jam in the mervyn's parking garage? That was entertainment. "

" I think its great to help find homes for these animals anyway we can! I wondered how they were doing at the shelpter so close to where the fireworks were. Probably terrified! We all need to do what we can and be responsible for them. "

" I noticed that for 2 years in a row the height of the fireworks seemed a bit low. I was in Veterans Park and some of those were barely above the third street bridge.

And I agree, poor festival this year. The stage for the bands couldnt be any smaller and no canopy for shade for the bands. Little to nothing for kids to do, and you could pratically count the none food vendors on one hand. "

" WOW talk about being hard to please.....why must there be so much whiners! Just take things for that they are, my goodness! Thanks NVR for posting this article. "

" Not whining, napachica, just telling it like it is. If the festival organizers think everything is great, they'll continue with the same pathetic drill, year after year. "
