UPDATE: Man dies at Lake Berryessa

A 23-year-old man nearly drowned Saturday at Lake Berryessa near Putah Creek, Napa County Sheriff reported Saturday.
The call came at a little before 12:30 p.m., Sheriff Sgt. Mike Clark said.

A sheriff’s deputy on jetboat patrol was flagged down and rescued the man floating underwater, according to Clark.
Napa County Fire Capt. Jesse Corral, who also answered the call, said advanced life support was administered on the victim as he laid on the shoreline.

The victim, who was camping at Putah Creek, was transported by Calstar to Queen of the Valley Hospital. His name was not released to the public.
As of 5:30 p.m., he was still at the hospital, Clark said. His condition was unknown.

" Lucky for this guy that a Sheriff’s Deputy was nearby. If he had to wait for the 911 call to process through, it would have been a body recovery. So, was this guy wearing a lifejacket?

I know people find it tasteless when I do this, but let’s all keep in mind how quickly tragedy strikes on the water. A day at the lake is fun, refreshing, and can create wonderful memories. But in the blink of an eye, those memories can go from joy to heartbreak. BE SAFE. WEAR A LIFEJACKET. DON’T DRINK WHILE ON THE WATER. "

" Skip -- great advice.

Ask any deputy up there, they'll tell you, every single drowning at the lake is ALCOHOL RELATED! "

" I applaud the deputy, first responder and the paramedic efforts. It is true, if the victim had to wait for the entire 9-1-1 process, there is a good chance it would have been a recovery and not a rescue.

If you use a cell phone in Napa County, in an emergency, you can call 707-253-0911 and you will be connected directly to the emergency dispatch center. "

" I hope this guy will be okay...Thank God for the Deputy & Fireman who saved him.

They should outlaw Alcohol at the lake..They did that at several other lakes, parks & beaches in So. Cal. The accidents and problems decreased. Just a thought! "

" Too bad the report was not accurate. Had it not been for a woman yelling that she had just seen a man go under the water and not come back up, no one would have even known anything had happened. An unrelated young man and myself jumped in to feel around for him near the bottom of the lake and once he was found, the man pulled him to shore. Yes, the sheriff finally came to assist and other rescue personnel did show up a few minutes later, but had it not been for the persistent young woman and the young man who pulled him to shore, the man would not have even survived to make it to the hospital. Say some prayers for this man, he will need it! And, just a word to the wise --- don't go camping at Putah Creek if you want to enjoy lovely Lake Berryessa -- it has become a place for alcohol and violence! Keep your phones handy and be ready to call 911 for help!! "

" Dial 911 on your cell phone, and get put on hold at the Solano CHP call center? Not smart. As Napa Native notes below, 707-253-0911 connects straight to Napa County dispatch for sheriff, ambulance and fire.

To repeat: Cell calls to 911 go to the CHP center in the phone's area code, and not to anywhere in Napa. Pass the word! If you're in an emergency in Napa County and need anyone other than a highway patrol person, call 707-253-0911. "

" I was there as well and bystanders were the ones first that responded. They continued to respond until the paramedics got there. I was across the cove and approached as the second person continued CPR. I assisted the paramedics once they arrived. I did not see who isactly pulled him out, but I know that he was out of the water before any sheriff was there. Thank god the lady saw him go under. I am happy to hear that he is still hanging in there. Please keep us posted on how he is doing. "

" Thanks for the Napa emergency number. Being put on hold for 911 is more than frustrating when things are going on around you. We could have used that number at least 3 times this past weekend --- which, in my book, is WAY too much!! In any case, we will pray for him. Our kids keep asking about his condition, as they were there and witnessed this tragedy as well. Thank you for the updates. "
