Travelers leaving Napa County for points west this weekend might want to reconsider their plans or routes. A major NASCAR event at Infineon Raceway in Sonoma County promises to snarl traffic on highways 37 and 121 Friday, Saturday and Sunday. On Sunday, more than 100,000 spectators are expected for the race./Register

" Great...I hope my commute home is better than it used to be since it should be mostly in the opposite direction. "

" Commute was ok this morning at 6AM through 12/121/37/101. One crazy knucklehead pulled out in front of me at Infineon to go a mile and pull off. Had to slow down to 40 from 60. This afternoon I'm not sure how long it will take me to get back from Napa. I'm debating about putting the top down in the commuter convertible on the way home or not. It was 100 degrees by raceway yesterday. I figure if I get stuck in traffic at least I can work on my suntan :-) "

" I've been in that mess in the past,,all directions are shot. I got on 37 east from 101 north at about 4:00 p.m and hit Napa at a little after 8:00 p.m. Stop and go,,mostly stop until 29 North. South bound backed up from 121. Do like I do and take the weekend off work if you work out of town. "

" At what point will society determine that NASCAR really isn't a sporting event and that it's nothing more than a wasteful, polluting thing that does far more harm than can ever be justified?

It's an abhorrence that is 50 years past it's shelf-life. "

" Ugh...I'm hoping to take off before 5 if I don't forget. The message signs on Lakeville and then again at Schellville have me worried. Now only if I could stop in on the Square via Watmaugh, but not this evening. Dab nab it! "

samynchris wrote on Jun 20, 2008 11:05 AM:

" Friday and Saturday will not be to bad. Normal Friday traffic of course. ( I take the same route Cathyodom ) But Sunday is a nightmare, it's the final race and you have to deal with the people that come for the day and the campers leaving. Everything comes to a halt usually by 3:00 - 4:00. I'm not a die hard fan and don't have a problem with Nascar but I think Infineon is in a horrible location for an event this big. It completely shuts down every artery in and out of Napa. Just plan ahead and you'll be alright. "

" I feel that all motor sports are, in fact, sports. But I think that they should not be carried on at this time due to pollution, energy waste, caused not only by the sports themselves but also by the waste and pollution caused by fans attending these events. We need to take an honest look at how everything effects our world. Hate to step on anyone's toes (or livelihood) but I feel that it is time for all motor sports to get red flagged. "

" Well Paddy,

NASCAR is a sport and I am extremely excited for the two day FUN event. Everybody is allways complaining about nothing to do in Napa. So when we have this spectacular event in our own back yard we should be happy. "

cathyodom wrote on Jun 20, 2008 1:59 PM:

" Thanks samynchris, I usually get off at 4, then will head out. Have Saturday and Sunday off so should be ok I hope! If not will see you in the traffic mess. "

shareathought wrote on Jun 20, 2008 4:47 PM:

" It isn't only the people who enjoy driving around in circles as, fast as they can, nor those that watch such events but those in power who believe that Napa should be a world class destination (approving more and more accommodations for visitors so, the children of the locals can look forward to serving those who travel here), yet, refusing to provide public transportation.

What if each event provided shuttles to neighboring places of mass transit (bart in ElCerrito, the ferry in Vallejo, bus #10 in Napa)?

We all must change our way of thinking.

If a motorized sporting event could be attended, without, an increase of massive amounts of gas vehicles, maybe that is what all attendees would "buy" for their quarterly fuel waste.

We behave as if waste is fun to do with our free time; soon, "free time" may be but a memory. Life will become harder as fuel or utility companies make even bigger profits.

It is time to be the change. It doesn't matter if one believes in God, Karma, science or not. Search for the video on the girl who silenced the world for 5 minutes. Take a hint. "

" To EverE:
If you feel that way about Nascar/motor sports, what about all those other sports that travel far more often than nascar. Get rid of basketball, football, baseball, professional wrestling (ok, not a sport, but they travel far more than any sport).
To paddy:
I am a huge nascar fan and for 1 weekend a year, I am able to get to a track without paying thousands of dollars to fly somewhere. It's just a race, a place and time to have fun. Relax a little.

GO JUNIOR!!!!! "

Jenn wrote on Jun 20, 2008 7:06 PM:

" I love watchign NASCAR, I have been a huge fan since I can remember. I wont however buy tickets for Infinion, you cant watch the whole race from the stands, and I avoid the area as much as possible when they are in town. Its much better to watch it at home. I also kinda agree with one other posters comment. Transpertaion to and from the event should be provided. If we had busses coming from Napa, Vallejo, Marin, I think it would help alliviate some of the traffic woes, because it is in a pretty bad location for holding such a large event. "

109823 wrote on Jun 20, 2008 7:07 PM:

" EverE, fat chance of that ever happening, too many BIG businesses are on the doors and hoods of those race cars. The loyal followers, that are totally dedicated to all the products advertized, travel thousands of miles to support their heroes. It's Americana, I'm not saying it's right just that it won't stop any time soon, especially when there'll be over 100,000 people in attendance for the actual race on Sunday. "

shareathought wrote on Jun 20, 2008 7:44 PM:

" "...maybe I should just put a cot in the hanger..."

Now there's a thought; different perspectives and with a bit of levity!

(oh, won't be passing that location nor honking; currently, working on ride-sharing for smaller event, different location)

Thank You. "

samynchris wrote on Jun 20, 2008 10:05 PM:

" We watch football games and basketball games on T.V because it's not 15 miles away. Do you think people that live by the Oakland Coliseum like us going there every other Sunday for 4 months straight. This is not a environmental thing. You complain about some cars driving in a circle for a weekend, but where do you go on vacation,,, fly to Hawaii,,, drive to Tahoe,,,when it disrupts you or your daily life it's a problem,,,if not,,, it's not a topic on the napa register,,,Have fun Nascar Fans. "

Amelia wrote on Jun 20, 2008 10:30 PM:

" They do have buses going to that event. Nice big air-conditioned touring buses. They pick all over as well. Everywhere from Vacaville to the college. And anyone with $35 can ride it. But hey, you won't be in your car wasting gas, you won't be having to deal with the traffic and best of all, you can sleep in it without crashing into other things. So for those who think you can't get there besides your car, you can take the bus, carpool with others, and here's the best ride your bike. if you are athletic, walk. You'll probably still get there faster than someone in their car. "

" Sorry "chunk",,,they actually turn right a couple times at infineon,,,,I'm tryin to justify your sport here but your making it hard by calling it a premiere track,,,it's a bunch of left turns with a couple right turns,,,gas pedal,,,brake pedal,,,make it interesting and use a blinker,,, "

" and if you enjoy NASCAR you might be a redneck....

that's funny because more drivers come from the western states (I think that CAL is a leader in the drivers provided) than any other state.

Me... I hate it. Maybe it is becaus eI am jealous I am not a driver of one of those super speeders. I would be a great NASCAR driver.

But I stay away from the area all together.

Have fun NASCAR fans! And remember; if you packed it in, pack it out! "

Quit complaining and enjoy the diversity that Nascar brings to the valley once a year. I personally never used to watch any of the Nascar races but now I am HOOKED! Congrats Dale Jr for his win last week and GOOD LUCK TONY! Wish I could be there this weekend! "

" I'm not too surprised by the adoration of this 'sport' considering the amount of high octane leaded fuel racing fans ingest while watching someone drive an automobile on a mostly oval track. How thrilling!

Steph just because I abhor NASCAR doesnt' mean I'm not fun... I surf and ski. I'm an NCVA "A" rated doubles volleyball player. I enjoy baseball, basketball, football and really have no complaints about sports of any kind. It's the motor 'sports' in the 21st century that bother me. Far too polluting to have any value. "

They're my beliefs, you know, and everybody is entitled their own. I am also too aware that as 109823 pointed out, nothing will change as there are too many gazillions of $ supporting the many sports empires. But, imagine--what if all of that money was spent on finding solutions to global warning? Oops! Dreaming again. "

steph wrote on Jun 21, 2008 1:24 PM:

" Paddy, how do you get yourself to the slopes? How do you arrive at the ocean for surfing, or for your volleyball tournaments? Bicycle?

Wasteful! Polluting! An abhorrence!

It's not so much that you pursue superior activities, as much as you condemned lesser folks' fun using a bit of hypocritical judgement.

NASCAR is mostly watched on TV, from the comfort of one's home. It IS a sport (the drivers and support teams are VERY skilled at what they do) and many folks who are not as accomplished as you enjoy getting together for tailgating and sharing and cheering their favorite teams. Probably most of them are honest, hard-working Americans who appreciate a little fun. Your condemnation of NASCAR was a little rude, no? I wonder how much of an impact a single NASCAR event makes pollution-wise compared to droves of Bay Area folks heading up to the slopes in their cars for skiing every weekend. Come to think of it, snow groomers are wasteful and polluting! And what about all that ski equipment that goes to the landfill--wasteful. What an abhorrence! Likewise, some people don't enjoy driving to a stadium to watch a football thrown back and forth by overpaid steroid-assisted "athletes", but I would hope they don't condemn such fun as thoroughly as you did NASCAR. I'd defend the football fans, too, even if they drove to the game.

I just think it would be nice to lighten up a bit on others' fun. Gosh, even a buddhist monk, who has all the room in the world to be saddened by each of our excesses, might have been a little more reflective.

Anyway. Enjoy your class A trophies. Trophies are wasteful, too, you know. "

" Paddy...You say this is not a sporting event? I guess 100k+ people and 50 years is wrong and somehow you are right. For those of you who say these men are not athletes-I would love to see Shaq hold up in one of these cars at a 120+ degrees for 4+ hours. Makes running up and down the court for an hour look like a cake walk. Don't get me wrong, I am a sports nut which includes MLB, NFL, NBA and the rest and I have respect for them all.

GO JEFF!!!! I will be there tomorow to cheer you on to victory. BTW-He is a Vallejo native and you should thank him and the rest of the drivers for all the $$ this SPORTING event pumps into this closed minded, NIMBY community we live in. "
