County wants to approve restaurant gardens
By Paul Franson
Coincident with the tomato scare, the county health and ag departments are starting to move toward inspecting and certifying the increasing numbers of gardens planted by restaurants wanting to feature their own fresh produce.
Ubuntu, which maintains a 1-acre garden, was the test plot.
By the way, the suspect tomatoes seem to be from Florida and Mexico. All from California seem OK if not at their peak yet.
Stanley Lane Market open
D&S Produce at Stanly Lane Pumpkin Patch in Carneros has reopened for the season.
The produce is offered under a tent that shades the produce and the patrons.
Displays tell where the produce was grown; the market tries to buy locally, but that’s not always practical.
D&S Produce is at Stanly Lane and Highway 121.
Call 480-4479 or 253-7512.
Hog Island Oysters
Hog Island Oyster Co. will open an oyster bar at Oxbow Public Market in October with a format similar to its outlet at the Ferry Building in San Francisco, but with some differences.
It will have a grill rather than a stovetop and serve its famous barbecued oysters and a fish special from Kanaloa Seafood in the market.
It will also sell its oysters, clams and mussels at retail.
La Toque’s new location
La Toque is scheduled to open Sept. 18 at the Westin. It will close the Rutherford site a few weeks before to move in and get established.
It will occupy the standalone space in front of the hotel and will offer the same food from chef Ken Frank, but the menu will be a little more flexible.
Instead of just one tasting menu, Ken will serve three-, four- or five-course meals with more choices in the courses.
The restaurant will have a patio with indoor and outdoor dining, plus a lobby bar called Bank. This will be the hotel’s site for breakfast and lunch.
Kelley’s open for breakfast
Kelley’s No Bad Days Café has started serving breakfast and brunch starting at 8 a.m.. Wednesday through Sunday.
It is open for lunch until 2 p.m., then reopen for dinner Wednesday through Saturday at 5.
It only serves brunch on Sunday, closing at 2.
On Thursday, Kelley doesn’t charge corkage and also features live music.
New wine director and manager at Ubuntu
The new wine director/general manager at Ubuntu restaurant, Daniel Sarao, most recently worked with Stark Reality Restaurants and before that at Bouchon in Yountville for three years.
At Ubuntu, he plans to create a more locally driven wine list, focusing more on Napa and Sonoma and showcasing lighter-style wines to pair with Jeremy Fox’s menu.
Back Room Wines open in new spot
Back Room Wines has opened at its new location near First and Main in downtown Napa.
The new shop is twice as big as the old space on Franklin Street.
A local magnet on Friday evenings for its popular tastings, Back Room Wines will extend the tastings and offer two wine flights changing weekly at its new wine bar.
The wine bar will also feature cheese and charcuterie plates and regular offerings from local wineries.
Back Room Wines is open seven days a week, 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., with later hours on Thursday, Friday and Saturday and private tastings by appointment.
Visit www.backroomwines.com or call 226-1378.
