For weeks now, dog lovers and others have been debating the merits of the off-leash dogs area at Alston Park.

The city's Recreation Advisory Commission is dealing with that topic this week.
What is your solution?

" Better signage throughout the park

Create a naturalized, visible barrier between on-leash and off-leash areas of the park, such as a long berm planted with natives

Have training clinics for voice and sight training and tags for dogs which qualify, akin to what has been accomplished for open space in Boulder, Colorado:

Continue the dialog to ease tension and foster positive, inclusive community with regard to Alston and park use

Promote responsible dog ownership and dog training - define what those are in regards to park use "

" New signs so as to make the “off-leash” and especially the “on-leash” area unmistakable.

Stiffer fines for breaking the rules. By now, everyone has had the chance to know tickets will be written. The new signs should convey the new fines. This should set things right, if not restraining orders would be appropriate for those with no regard for the rules of the park.

Some have been treating Alston Park as if was their own personal backyard for years now. In fact, someone recently wrote--“my dog and I want our park back” – as if he/she had the deed to Alston Park in their back pocket. The fact is that going to Alston Park is not a right but a privilege, and only those who abide by the rules of the park have ANY right to be there. Unfortunately, there are those in Napa who don’t get this basic and essential truth. That is why we have the NPD. "

" Close it, people ignore the rules so why bother.
A proper Napa Valley solution would be to erect a nice dorm and let the field workers move in for six bucks a day. "

" Since 70% surveyed think the off-leash area should be expanded, that seems the democratic solution. I suggest about 50/50 even though the survey said 75% use the park with their dogs. "

" I agree that whatever the dimensions of the off leash area, better signage and increased fines are a must to encourage compliance with the rules of the park. Rules about "Petiquette" should be posted prominently also. I agree with misofrappacino on all of her suggestions and the increased fines advocated by walker for life. Enforcement of the rules needs to be consistent.

I am okay with an expansion of the off-leash area if these other solutions are brought into play so everyone can enjoy the park, and if off leash dog owners agree to play by the rules. Perhaps a license for walking off leash in the off leash area, with a signed agreement regarding the exact rules of the park. "

" Let them run free. If a dog comes up to you pet it, if it attacks you drop kick it. If you hit a dog in the throat a couple times they'll back off. Guaranteed. "

John Richards wrote on Jun 12, 2008 10:33 PM:

" Chunk, no need to drop kick a dog. Just use pepper spray. I consider any unleashed dog that approaches me within six feet as potentially aggressive, requiring me to deploy self-defense measures. "

John Richards wrote on Jun 13, 2008 11:54 AM:

" Doglover, your understanding of statistics is faulty. Even if we accept that 75% use the park with their dogs, less than half of those want the off-leash area expanded.
I accept the commission's compromise. Increase the off-leash area by 5 acres, then triple the fines for off-leash use of the on-leash area. "

" The rectangle, North Section would be perfect for off leash, and could be easily blocked off, there is a road there, and could just erect a fence or use the road as a block off point. Has its own entrance and parking lot and everything. "

" My solution is to take the existing dog rules in the off leash area, and apply them to the current on leash area, and make everyone in the park aware of their obligations as a dog walker, and cautions as a dogless walker. If you don't like dogs, there are 46 other parks that welcome you, and not dogs. "

" I think we should screen people to be sure they know what it takes to be a dog owner. Ha Ha, that won't work. How about be kind to your fellow human. "

" If your dog is well mannered, great! Let him/her scamp around off a leash and have some fun.
I remember being at the park, and an owner was sitting with a muzzled dog. "She likes to bite," the owner said. Dogs like this, um... let's see... Keep them at home! Let them run around the back yard.
Same point of view on kids... If they're well mannered, great! Let's them run around and get some excercise. But if they bite, knock into people, or wear they're pants too low, put them on a leash connected to a pole in the backyard and let them run in circles. "

" Off-leash is just dumb. It only works on private property or wilderness. "

cathyodom wrote on Jun 19, 2008 7:35 AM:

" Heat... about 97 degrees yesterday after work, went to Alston with the dog offleash (yes in the off leash area)and, essentially, "no traffic" as it was so darn hot. So either a section of the park fenced or cordoned off, or setup a specific time, morning or afternoon, where people can walk with their dogs off leash. "
