Two Napa men facing serious drug charges

Two Napa men are facing serious drug charges and are being accused of growing 3,000 or more marijuana plants in rural Napa County. On Thursday, June 12, Napa Special Investigation Bureau (NSIB) agents arrested Freddy Arreola Romero, 18, and Ishmail Arreola, both listed as transients in Napa County, on suspicion of cultivation of marijuana and resisting arrest.

Throughout the month of June, NSIB agents have stepped up their efforts to locate and eradicate what they describe as “clandestine marijuana growing operations in the hills of Napa County” according to a NSIB press release. They have also been working hard to capture the individuals responsible for the pot farms, situated in the Fir Canyon area of Highway 128 — east of Lake Hennessey.
On June 12, NSIB agents along with officers from the Napa Police Department and the California Department of Justice’s Bureau of Narcotic Enforcement entered the area to search for pot farmers and found Arreola and Romero. The duo ran from the agents and ignored their commands to stop, according to the release.

Agents captured Romero with the help of a police dog, who ran after Romero and bit him. Arreola ran into a separate team of agents who were guarding the perimeter of the search and was taken into custody according to the NSIB.
Agents discovered 3,000 marijuana plants growing in the vicinity along with ammunition for a 12-gauge shotgun. Both men were taken to jail. Romero was in the country illegally, and Arreola is considered a felon, who had previously been deported according to the press release.

Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents put a no-bail immigration hold on both men the NSIB said. The estimated street value of the marijuana plants is $9 million, based on the estimate that each plant would produce about a pound of bud valued at $3,000 upon maturity, the release said.
The confiscated marijuana would have produced two million or more marijuana cigarettes. Anyone with information about drug-related activities in Napa County is asked to contact the NSIB at (707) 224-3784.

“Such activities can include but are not limited to suspicious vehicles stopped alongside the road in rural areas or at unusual times, hikers in areas not known for hiking or recreational activities, the discovery of new pedestrian trails in remote areas and waterlines in suspicious locations.

Heck I'm thinkin I might stick a "De La" in front of my last name so I can get all of those free services that I have to pay for now. "

" To thzn...regarding your post...did you even read the article? Did you see that both of thesse men are here illegally growing pot? Did it ever occur to you that they are part of a larger picture involving mexican drug cartels? You would rather the money from the sale of this pot ends up in mexican drug cartel hands? Hello....Granted, pot should probably be legal, and those who want to fog their brains with it should be able to. Then it would not be making money for drug lords in another country....but since it is illegal, why would you condone not arresting people who are taking money out of our country? "

" Every year, "eradication" occurs, and every year, there is still plenty of marijuana available on the streets. It is obvious that something isn't working, but they still do it year after year. There's a saying that insanity is doing the same thing over and over again expecting different results. I suppose the NSIB has to do SOMETHING to earn all those shiny new toys. "

" The war on marijuana is tax payer money well spent.Smoking pot leads to other drug use, which in turn leads to more crime supporting the habit. Not to mention supporting gang activity, guns etc.Let it go and tax it,that is absurd. "

" Calling these men "Napa Men" is a misstatement. They are not documented and are considered "transients". So in my mind, they are not to be considered "Napa Men". "

" I could not care less if people want to smoke pot. What bothers me about these two scumbags (and others like them) is that innocent people might stumble upon their camps and get hurt by one of their booby traps or shot by an armed guard. These are not some hippies chillin' out with a little weed. Get rid of all of them. "

thzn wrote on Jun 15, 2008 2:09 PM:

" sandra- if the cops would stop killing all the plants, the supply might end up higher than the demand thus making pot growing unprofitable. plus, just because they are here illegally doesnt mean their money is going to some "mexican cartel", its probably staying here in napa, spent at local stores and restaurants. not all marijuana is connected to cartels and drug lords "

Dwayne wrote on Jun 15, 2008 2:41 PM:

" MarshaMarsha, you're right. It's too bad that the "drug war" is not about eradication. It's just another bureaucracy that feeds on our taxes with no return for our money except for the fun cop-toys. If they put that much effort into stopping gang activity, then all the graffiti, shootings and knifing would come to a halt, but they only need manpower and no fancy equipment to do that, and it's no where near as exciting as flying around looking into people's back yards, repelling into the bush, and having the equivalent of a paint ball game with illegals who run instead of fight like gang members do. It's much molore fun to wear camo's, paint their faces, and play Rambo, than to do real police work that serves the community. "

" It is the job of law enforcement to enforce the law. This is why we call them “Law Enforcement”. I hold no animosity toward law enforcement officials for doing their job.

It is the DUTY of the citizenry to apply political pressure on our elected officials to have laws that make sense. Marijuana should be treated no differently than tobacco and alcohol.

Legalize Marijuana! "

" By the way, how are we doing at finding the person that hit and killed 2 year old Mattea Reynolds? Are we spending nearly the resources on finding her killer as we did finding this pot?

Just a thought. "

" Irregardless of what I feel about the legalization of marijauna. What is troubling, is the a convicted felon and a previously deported person are back in our country illeaglly. This is another fine example of how our boarders need to be secured. Yes, I agree with the headlines "2 Napa men...." These are NOT citizen's of Napa. Though I would expect NVR not to put out a headlines that read " 2 illegal immigrants captured with 3,000 pounds of
marijauna." Now, they sit in the county jail getting their free food, shelter and a free ride home. All at our expense. "

kdbk wrote on Jun 15, 2008 10:43 PM:

" Many good points:

-Mass illegal immigration needs to be stopped
-Pot needs to be decriminalized
-Cops need to spend more resources on gang eradication
-Many cops serve honorably and for the good of their community, but most good cops know that spending time busting pot smokers/growers is not the best use of resources
-Oh, and let's not forget the other very-true comments...regarding how there are (oh, yes, there are) some in law enforcement who really get their jollies with all the "toys" and going in military style to take down evil plants.

Has there ever been a more hopeless "war" in history as the one between the U.S. government and this plant? It's time for a more intelligent approach. "

" First off I agree with UncleStuy - these 2 are not Napa residents - one of them isn't even a US citizen (why is he back and is he legal this time?)
Second - doesn't it seem a little stupid for the cops to tell us what they look for when searching for illegal pot crops??? Thanks for giving the local criminals a heads up on activity to avoid the next time they want to do this.... seems like a really idiotic strategy for Napa PD to publish this information.
And Third - it's just weed, why do they spend so much time on this and not enough time worrying about the meth heads and meth cookers in this valley??? those are the guys that need to be stopped - Well in my opinion of course! "

If you were here for 14 years as an illegal, I wouldn't boast about it to the legal citizens that paid the taxes to maintain the streets, police protection and way of life you enjoyed without contributing to!
I would think: legally you owe back taxes...Napa resident! "

707jng wrote on Jun 20, 2008 11:33 AM:

You may want to keep the 14 years illegal status to yourself MR_Napa. All it's going to do is make the legal people really mad. but I'm glad your legal now :) and paying taxes like the rest of us I hope. "

" Let's clarify a BIG misconception!!!! Most illegals do pay taxes!!!!!!!!!! It is a requirement by INS when you apply for residency or citizenship!!

Also the money is most likely not going to a mexican cartel! The pot is already here how about look around and see who is unspectedly driving nice cars and buying expensive homes on a $15 per hour job or small business!

Who is paying for the irrigation systems? "

I don't understand the above?
How many illeagals go the INS after they sneak across the border to be told they have to pay taxes?
LOL
Liberals believe in a utopia where everyone obeys the laws and we must feed the world with equality for all.
Hello!, Reality check!
People don't respect and obey the laws. We can't feed our own citizens with the vague rules set up by these liberal programs such as welfare and WIC.
There are times when an AMERICAN CITIZEN needs a helping hand from the goverment and country they are a citizen of and pay taxes to.
But, living off those programs or using them when you are NOT A CITIZEN is wrong and should be stopped.
I'm sure those that supported those programs when they were put to vote. Did not intend the benefits to go to lazy people or illegals who don't care to help contribute to our great country.
Everyone talks about budgets to stem the tide of illegals.
It's simple:
Take away their ability to get something free from our system, and repeal "automatic citizenship at birth".
Then there is no reason to come here.
Think how much we'll save in taxes or where we can put that tax money to benefit the LEGAL CITIZEN! "
