2:30 p.m.Riding the VINE and local community shuttles will be free Thursday ,June 19 as part of a Bay Area “spare the air” program.

Transit will be free on Napa’s VINE, including Route 10 to Vallejo and Calistoga, and the shuttles in American Canyon, St. Helena and Yountville as a way of encouraging people to give up their cars long term.
The Metropolitan Transportation Commission and the Bay Area Air Quality Management District are funding free transit as part of a program to reduce greenhouse gases and air pollution.

Each gallon of gas saved by taking transit eliminates 20 pounds of carbon dioxide emissions, the sponsors said.
BART and the Vallejo Baylink ferries will only be free until noon Thursday.

" Excuse me, but a gallon of gasoline weighs about 7.5 pounds, and it's scientifically impossible to produce 20 pounds of anything from that. Someone's been drinking too much GoreAid..... "

" Good call on the Goregebra, Dwayne. Sounds like some journalist failed both math AND science in school. "

" The trolley has been free for years and no one rides it. I think they should buy more of those buses they pay an extra $200,000 to get 3 more miles to the gallon so that they can drive around nearly empty of passengers. "

" If the Gore global warming parishioners can get 20 pounds of emissions from 7 pounds of gasoline, it's either magic (like most of Gore's "facts"), or a great scientific leap in cold fusion that would solve the entire world's energy problems.

The longer this continues, the more blatant the fabrications become. Like changing an incandescent light bulb to compact fluorescent for a year is the same as removing 400 cars from the highways. Where did they come up with that little "inconvenient truth"...??? "

" We should be able to ride the WINE TRAIN, in a commuter car, considering how they use public funds.... "

" My 2 oldest kids have been rididng the trolley ever scince they started. We try to ride them on the weekends as our means of transportation. Its fun and the kids love it.More families should do this as it shows the children how public transportation isnt yucky or uncool. It helps on the enviroment PLUS cuts down the cost of us parents transporting them everywhere.Think of how much a family can save using the trolly for shopping downtown and anywhere it goes.I calculated it and for each ride my family and I would take, would cost $15 that is if we get dropped off at one stop and get back on again to go back home.So we are saving between $60-$120 a month if we go 2xs a week. That would give us a tank or tank and a half of gas.I urge families to use this free public transportation then use the money you save for something special for your family. " I'm not sure how many people can fit on a regular bus, I'm guessing 60. If those 60 people took their own car, well, that would be 60 cars. That is what they are trying to say, I think. Let's make this simple. If you use one gallon of gas to take 60 people one mile, that is a heck of alot better than using 6 gallong to move the same amount of people the same distance. Now apologize to Al. "
