9:45 a.m.A Sunday night house fire in Napa sent one man to the hospital and caused $140,000 in damage to the structure.

The fire broke out around 9:15 p.m. at a two-story Victorian house in the 400 block of Wilson Street.
Charles Humphries, 56 — one the three occupants of the house — smelled smoke in the upstairs and went to investigate, according to Napa Fire Capt. Scott Sedgley.

“When he opened the door to the storage/closet area, he got hit by the hot gases from the fire. He suffered facial and second-degree burns to his hands and respiratory problems,” Sedgley said.
Humphries was helped out of the house by his roommates, who were not hurt.  He was conscious when firefighters arrived. Humphries was taken to Queen of the Valley Medical Center, Sedgley said.

The cause of the fire is under investigation, Sedgley said, adding, it does not appear to be suspicious.
The fire damage was contained to the attic and the upstairs, he said. “However there was smoke and water damage to the downstairs.”

The house was not destroyed, but it will not be livable until substantial repairs are done, Sedgley said.

No neighboring houses were threatened, and no one was evacuated.

Two engines from Napa County fire assisted local firefighters.

" I was just leaving Fuller Park when i saw a fire truck we saw a bunch of smoke so went where it was and went down a street and saw flames shooting out of an upstairs window and when I got out to look heard it roaring, Fire sounds so evil the way it roars, SCARY!
I am so happy to hear no one was killed!! Sad that that old house was burned. :( "

" I live acrossed the street from the house that caught fire, and my boyfriend is the one that spotted the smoke and then we both tried to called 911 from our cell phones. What i can say from trying to call 911 from a cell phone, make sure that you have the local dispatch already into your phone! It kept putting us on hold and another neighbor had to call from a landline to get the fire department out here. I do have to say that I am truely impressed by how quickly it was put out, and there was a truck on site until very early this morning to assure there were no flair-ups! "

" That is crazy. With modern technology available today, anyone should be able to dial 911 from a cell phone and it should be routed to emergency dispatch in the area code the cell is being used. "

" Why did the register not run a photo of the house fire. I know for a fact that there was a guy there taking photo's. For a paper that keep's say it want's to focus more on local spot new's you don't. You guy's use to do a very good job at it covering this stuff. Youu use to have photo guy that took great photo's. People like to see photo's with the story's you run and in this case with house fire it would have been nice to see a photo with the story, because they are a lot closer to what's going. "
