NOTES AND QUOTES for a Tuesday in the Napa Valley:

Koryn Kendall, a middle hitter from Napa, will graduate from the University of Chicago as the all-time leader in total blocks (389) and block assists (244) in volleyball. She leaves as the most dominant blocker in the Chicago program’s history.
Kendall, a former Vintage High School player, is also second all-time in kills (1,135) and solo blocks (145).

“It felt pretty good to do that,” Kendall said on the school’s athletic web site. “It will be cool to have my name in the hall of records at Ratner (Athletics Center) for a while.”
“I’m going to miss the laughter,” Kendall added. “No matter what the outcome of the game was, I could always find something to be happy about with my team. They have been my family away from home for these past four years, and I’m going to miss having them around.”

She played four years for Chicago, an NCAA-Division III school that plays in the University Athletic Association, comprised also of Brandeis University, Carnegie Mellon University, Case Western Reserve University, Emory University, New York University, University of Rochester and Washington University of St. Louis.
She was an All-UAA honorable mention or second-team selection for three seasons in a row.

As a freshman, Kendall led the Maroons in attack percentage as the squad battled to its first winning season in eight years.

Kendall, a public policy major, was part of a very good Vintage volleyball team her senior year that advanced to the CIF Northern California playoffs under coach Jim Cherniss.

New Vintage High head volleyball coach Kate Gauger will be the guest of the KVON Sportsvine, an hour-long show that airs Saturday at 9 a.m. on KVON 1440 AM. The KVON Sportsvine is hosted by Terry Simpkins, Charles Kennedy and Mark McLeod.

Gauger, who coached La Jolla High School to four CIF San Diego Section Division III championships in five years, is a Napa resident and teaches English and P.E. at New Tech High School.

Gauger, who led La Jolla to five Western League titles in five years as the Vikings’ coach, takes over for Jim Cherniss, who stepped down following the 2007 season with the Crushers. They were 21-9 overall with a second-place finish in the Monticello Empire League and moved on to the Sac-Joaquin Section Div. I playoffs.
