Open baseball tryout

for high school players June 15 in San Jose
Under Armour and Baseball Factory will be hosting an open tryout for high school players in the San Jose area. The tryout, powered by Baseball Factory, will take place in San Jose June 15 at Pioneer High School at 1 p.m. All high school baseball players ages 13 to 18 are encouraged to attend. It is an opportunity for them to be evaluated by pro scouts and to learn how to take their game to the next level.

In 2007, over 130 players from the region competed in front of Baseball Factory scouts, including Trevor Cesar, a pitcher from Golden Valley High School who will graduate this year. Cesar made several Under Armour National Teams and will be heading to Duke University in the fall.

Solano Community College offers football camps starting July 7
Solano Community College in Fairfield is offering football camps over the summer for players of all ages.

A linebacker and defensive back camp is July 9 and 10, from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. The cost is $40 (in person) and $30 for early registration (before July 2). Campers will receive top flight instruction from experienced coaches and college football players. A linebacker and defensive back manual/book will be provided, which consists of techniques, rules, drills, and a large volume of information for young players to facilitate sound development. A camp T-shirt is provided. Players are to wear shorts and a T-shirt, tennis shoes, football cleats and are to bring water bottles.

Players are asked to wear athletic attire (shorts and T-shirts), tennis shoes or football cleats, and to bring water bottles.

A quarterbacks and receiver/running backs camp is July 7 and 8, from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m., at Solano football stadium.

The camp offers intense instruction and individual development from the Solano coaching staff and players. Both quarterback and receivers/running backs fundamentals/techniques will be addressed. The cost is $75 (in person), $60 for early registration (before July 2). Campers will get top flight instruction from experienced coaches and college football players. A quarterback and receiver’s manual/book will be provided and consists of techniques, rules, drills and a large volume of information for young players to facilitate sound development. A camp T-shirt is included. Floyd Burnsed, Solano’s head coach, has over 30 years of experience as a football coach. Players are asked to wear athletic attire (shorts and T-shirts), tennis shoes or football cleats, and to bring water bottles.

St. Patrick/St. Vincent Bruins Summer Wrestling Camps start June 16

The St. Patrick/St. Vincent Bruins Summer Wrestling Camps offers three sessions:

• June 16-20, wrestling basics, 5-8 p.m. It’s for those ages anywhere from the fourth grade to 11th grade. The cost is $125.

• July 7-11, father/son camp, 5-8 p.m. It’s for ages anywhere from the fourth grade to 11th grade and for their mother or father. The cost is $125 per wrestler and $50 for the parent.

• July 28-Aug. 1, 5-8 p.m. It’s for ages anywhere from the fourth grade to 11th grade. The cost is $125 per wrestler.

The clinicians are Bobby Gonzalez Jr., the 2003 CIF state meet champion at 135 pounds and a four-time Monticello Empire League champion, and Bobby Gonzalez, Sr., the Vallejo High assistant wrestling coach (1991-2003), Vallejo PAL wrestling coach (1990-2004), St. Patrick/St. Vincent assistant wrestling coach (2007-present), and Vallejo Sports Club wrestling coach (2006-present).

Warriors Basketball Camp at Justin-Siena July 28-Aug. 1

The Golden State Warriors recently announced the 2008 summer schedule for Warriors Basketball Camp, presented by Gatorade. The summer schedule features a dozen sessions at 12 different locations throughout the Bay Area, marking the largest number of locations ever offered in the nine-year history of Warriors Basketball Camp. Over 12,000 youth have attended Warriors Basketball Camp since its inception in the summer of 2000.

The summer schedule is highlighted by 10 week-long general sessions, which focus on individual skill development, the importance of fundamentals and the development of a healthy team attitude for boys and girls, ages 8-16, of all skill levels and abilities. The general sessions will be held in Oakley, Santa Rosa, Los Altos Hills, Newark, Alameda, Saratoga, Dublin, Napa, Larkspur and San Ramon.

Session VIII, scheduled for July 28-Aug. 1, is at Justin-Siena High School.

In addition to the general sessions, a pair of week-long high potential camps (ages 11-17) will also be offered, with sessions in San Francisco and Alameda.

The staff at Warriors Basketball Camp is made up of current high school and college coaches, as well as current and former local college players. Most sessions of Warriors Basketball Camp also feature appearances by current and former Warriors players and coaches.

Napa Valley Adult Education summer golf class starts June 3

Napa Valley Adult Education is offering a new session of the basics of golf starting June 3 and continuing through July 8. The class is held at the Vintner’s Golf Club in Yountville from 5-6 p.m. and is taught by golf professionals. Pre-registration is required and all fees must be paid prior to class. Girls basketball clinic at Vintage through June 5

A girls drop-in basketball clinic for those players in the sixth through 11th grade will be held Mondays and Thursdays, March 31 through June 5, from 6:30 to 8 p.m. at the Vintage High School gym. There is no charge./Register

U.S. Youth Volleyball starts June 5 in American Canyon

The United States Youth Volleyball League officially opens early registration for its upcoming summer 2008 season. This eight-week program gets kids active and teaches the fundamentals of volleyball, such as serving, passing, setting and spiking. The league in American Canyon meets at Kimberly Park on Thursdays, from 6-7 p.m., and Saturdays from 9-10 a.m. The season begins June 5 and ends July 26.

Registration for this program can be done online at www.USYVL.org, or you can request a registration form by calling the USYVL national office at 1-888-988-7985.

The USYVL is a youth sports organization that is bringing volleyball to communities as a way to get kids active.

The USYVL also has several volunteer opportunities, such as volleyball instructors, program coordinators and coaches. The USYVL provides training prior to the start of the season.

Storm Classic Golf Tournament June 6

at Silverado Resort

The third annual Storm Classic Golf Tournament, a benefit for the Napa Valley College athletic programs, is June 6 with a noon shotgun on the Silverado Resort South Course. Registration will start at 10 a.m. The main format will be a two-best net balls of the foursome (90 percent of handicap). There will be a men’s, women’s and mixed team division in this format. There will also be a scramble division for teams made up of players without established handicaps and is open to all who would rather play scramble than best ball. If you do not have an established handicap and would like to play two best net balls, organizers will assign one to you at check-in. Individuals without a team will be assigned  to a team. Teams can only compete in one division.

The entry fee/donation of $190 per individual and $700 per team before May 30 includes lunch on the course, range balls prior to play, tee prizes, golf and cart fees, a cocktail and hors d’oeuvres awards reception, and dinner with wine in the main ballroom following play. The cost for entries received after May 30 are $200 per person.

There will be a hole-in-one prize, closest-to-the-pin prizes on every par-3, and a long drive contest for both men and women. The evening program includes an auction, featuring golf items and other interesting items.

Several levels of tournament sponsorship are available, including tee sign ($100), sponsor-a-student player ($150), hole sponsor ($500), birdie sponsor ($1,000), eagle sponsor ($2,000) and double eagle sponsor ($4,000).

Checks are to be made payable to Napa Valley College Foundation.

Non-golfers are also invited. The cost to attend the dinner and auction (without playing golf) is $70 per person.
