Napa American Legion Baseball Club golf tournament May 31

The sixth annual Napa American Legion Baseball Club Golf Tournament is May 31 at Napa Golf Course in Kennedy Park. There’s a 7:30 a.m. check-in with golfers being able to use the driving range. The tournament, a scramble format, has an 8:30 a.m. shotgun start. It’s followed by lunch, an awards program and live auction at 1:30 p.m. It’s a fundraiser for the Napa American Legion Baseball Club.
The cost is $125 per player. The cost covers range balls, green fees, golf cart, a sleeve of golf balls and lunch following the tournament.

Tee/green hole sponsorships range from $100 to $1000.

NVC to host Northern California Public Parks State Championship tennis starting May 31

Napa Valley College will host the 2008 Northern California Public Parks State Championship on two consecutive weekends, May 31-June 1 and June 6-8.

The tennis tournament is open to all players, both juniors and adults.

Junior and family division play will take place the weekend of June 6-8. Divisions include boys and girls singles for ages 12, 14, 16 and 18, and boys and girls doubles for ages 14, 16 and 18.

Family-member teams consist of father-son, mother-daughter or sibling teams.

Adults may register to play by age group or by NTRP rating (3.0 to 5.0). Age group divisions include men’s doubles (45, 55, 65, 70+), women’s doubles (50, 60, 70+) and mixed doubles (50, 60, 70+). NTRP divisions include men’s and women’s singles and doubles, and mixed doubles. Adult play takes place the weekend of May 30 through June 1.

Players are limited to one singles event and a total of three events per person. The third event must be a family event.

Entry fees are $33 for singles and $23 per player for doubles. Entry deadline is May 24 for adult events, and May 29 for junior/family events. Cheer, dance coaches needed for AmCan Patriots

The American Canyon Patriots are now accepting applications for cheer and dance coaches to lead their competitive cheer program. Limited coaching positions are still available at all levels. Head coaches must be at least 21 years old; assistant coaches, 18 years old; junior advisors, 14 years old.

Napa Valley Adult Education summer golf class starts June 3

Napa Valley Adult Education is offering a new session of the basics of golf starting June 3 and continuing through July 8. The class is held at the Vintner’s Golf Club in Yountville from 5-6 p.m. and is taught by golf professionals. Pre-registration is required and all fees must be paid prior to class. Girls drop-in basketball clinic at Vintage through June 5

A girls drop-in basketball clinic for those players in the sixth through 11th grade will be held Mondays and Thursdays, March 31 through June 5, from 6:30 to 8 p.m. at the Vintage High School gym. There is no charge.

U.S. Youth Volleyball starts June 5 in American Canyon

The United States Youth Volleyball League officially opens early registration for its upcoming summer 2008 season. This eight-week program gets kids active and teaches the fundamentals of volleyball, such as serving, passing, setting and spiking. The league in American Canyon meets at Kimberly Park on Thursdays, from 6-7 p.m., and Saturdays from 9-10 a.m. The season begins June 5 and ends July 26.

The USYVL is a youth sports organization that is bringing volleyball to communities as a way to get kids active.

The USYVL also has several volunteer opportunities, such as volleyball instructors, program coordinators and coaches. The USYVL provides training prior to the start of the season.

Storm Classic Golf Tournament June 6 at Silverado Resort

The third annual Storm Classic Golf Tournament, a benefit for the Napa Valley College athletic programs, is June 6 with a noon shotgun on the Silverado Resort South Course. Registration will start at 10 a.m. The main format will be a two-best net balls of the foursome (90 percent of handicap). There will be a men’s, women’s and mixed team division in this format. There will also be a scramble division for teams made up of players without established handicaps and is open to all who would rather play scramble than best ball. If you do not have an established handicap and would like to play two best net balls, organizers will assign one to you at check-in. Individuals without a team will be assigned  to a team. Teams can only compete in one division.

The entry fee/donation of $190 per individual and $700 per team before May 30 includes lunch on the course, range balls prior to play, tee prizes, golf and cart fees, a cocktail and hors d’oeuvres awards reception, and dinner with wine in the main ballroom following play. The cost for entries received after May 30 are $200 per person.

There will be a hole-in-one prize, closest-to-the-pin prizes on every par-3, and a long drive contest for both men and women. The evening program includes an auction, featuring golf items and other interesting items.

Several levels of tournament sponsorship are available, including tee sign ($100), sponsor-a-student player ($150), hole sponsor ($500), birdie sponsor ($1,000), eagle sponsor ($2,000) and double eagle sponsor ($4,000).

Non-golfers are also invited. The cost to attend the dinner and auction (without playing golf) is $70 per person.

Oakland Raiders Youth Skills Camp June 7-8

The eighth annual Oakland Raiders Youth Skills Camp is set for June 7-8 and is open to boys and girls ages 8 to 14. Raider players and coaching staff, along with Bay Area high school and college coaches, instruct participants on fundamental football techniques. All camp instruction and activities will be held at the Raiders facility in Alameda.

The two-day camp is designed to encourage boys and girls to participate in and enjoy the game of football. Demonstrations, step-by-step explanations, one-on-one attention and close instruction are designed to substantially improve on each athlete’s ability. There will be sessions specific to offense, defense and special teams play. Athletes with all levels of experience are encouraged to participate.

Campers will have the opportunity to tour the facility, including a visit to the team locker room, and get autographs from many of their favorite Raiders.

The two-day camp begins on Saturday morning and concludes Sunday afternoon. Each session runs from 8 a.m. until approximately 3 p.m.

The registration fee includes instruction, camp T-shirt, Raiders gift bag, and lunch on both days.

Justin-Siena basketball camps start June 9

The 29th annual Justin-Siena Basketball Camps, offering boys, youth and girls camps, start in June.

• A boys high school camp, for those entering grades 10-12, is June 9-13, from 9 a.m. to noon. The cost is $130.

• A youth camp, for those entering grades 3-9, is June 16-20, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. The cost is $100.

• A girls high school camp offers session I for those entering ninth grade only and is June 9-19, from 4 to 6 p.m., and session II for those entering grades 10-12 runs June 9-19 from 6 to 8 p.m. The cost is $130.

• A youth camp offers session III for those entering grades 3-5 is June 23-27 from 9 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. and session IV for those entering grades 6-8 runs June 23-27 from 1 to 4:30 p.m. The cost is $100. There is an additional $35 administrative registration fee.

All campers receive a T-shirt and a regulation basketball. City of Napa summer volleyball camp has June 12 deadline

The city of Napa’s Community Resources Department is offering a summer volleyball camp at the Napa Valley College gym. Designed for beginner and intermediate volleyball enthusiasts alike, this camp will teach all of the fundamentals of the game. Players will be placed in both age and skill appropriate groups. Space is limited due to camper/instructor ratio. The instructor is Kelly Van Winden, the Napa Valley College head volleyball coach.

Youths ages 9 to 11 play Monday through Thursday, June 16-19, from 9 a.m. to noon. The cost is $120.

Youths ages 12 to 14 play Monday through Thursday, June 16-19, from 9 a.m. to noon. The cost is $120.

Tennis shoes are required for this camp. The registration deadline is June 12.

Pure Potential Academy soccer camps start June 16

Pure Potential Academy soccer camps is taking enrollment for the 2008 soccer training season. Abe Torres has a system of training that incorporates a visual aid he has created to develop accuracy and consistency in soccer fundamentals. The training camps will be held June 16-20, June 23-27, July 7-11 and July 14-18, Monday through Friday, from 9 a.m. to noon at West Park Elementary School. The camps are for players ages 6 to 14.

City of Napa youth basketball clinic has June 19 deadline

The city of Napa’s Community Resources Department is putting on a youth basketball clinic for boys and girls ages 7 to 14 at the Redwood Middle School gym. The summer camp is a new six-week program with a variety of modified games such as boys, girls, co-ed, 2-on-2, 3-on-3, 5-on-5, round robins, double-elimination tournament brackets, pyramid tournaments and more.

Tuesday players show up on June 24 and Thursday players show up on June 26 at 5 p.m. and staff will put you on a team and into an organized game.

Staff will place players on teams randomly each program day. Pre-registration is required. The registration deadline is June 19.

Youths ages 7 to 9 play on Tuesday, June 24 to July 29, 5 to 7 p.m. The cost is $40.

Youths ages 10 to 12 play on Tuesday, June 24 to July 29, 5 to 7 p.m. The cost is $40.

New downtown Napa bike race and festival June 21

The Napa Downtown and Riverfront Grand Prix will take over the streets of Napa June 21 for a day of fast criterium racing along with a festival with live music, vendors and more. Presented by Cycle Circus and ZteaM Cycling, proceeds from the first-ever race will benefit the Stone Bridge School.

One of the year’s most exciting courses features a sprint down Main Street alongside the newly opened Veteran’s Park and Riverwalk. Racers will navigate the short, fast course that includes five turns and signature “270o monster.”

Professional and amateur races will run from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. with cash prizes, T-shirts, and awards of Cycles Gladiator wine, bike products from Napa River Velo and others.

Registration will open May 23. Race flyer and registration information can be found through the NCNCA site, www.ncnca.org/road/. Entry fees are $25 with a $15 second race. Neutral wheel support will be provided by Williams Wheel Systems for all categories.

This is the first race for Cycling Circus, a partnership of Jess Raphael of VOS Racing and Rick McClanahan of the Eagle Racing Team. Previously, Raphael was the 2007 Cherry Pie race director and emceed a number of other cycling events. McClanahan has been actively involved with the Eagle Racing Team and BBC races for the past few years.

ZteaM is a national cycling club supporting the growth of masters, elite, and youth cycling through club riding and racing. While ZteaM has a racing emphasis, its objective is to support all areas of cycling and to encourage family involvement by hosting social events for both cyclists and their families. ZteaM Cycling has largely focused on club riding and masters racing since 2004, but recently formed an elite team, which is managed by veteran riders Christian Kearney and Dave McCook.

Justin-Siena baseball camp begins June 23

The Justin-Siena High School baseball coaching staff will hold a comprehensive week-long camp for youths ages to 10 to 15, June 23-27 on the varsity field that focuses on the fundamentals of baseball and game play. Coaches will help you improve your game through drills, instruction and game-like situations. There will be a maximum of 10 players to 1 coach ratio. A snack, drink and camp shirt are included. The camp runs from 9 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. The cost is $150. Additional options are $35 for a fitted baseball cap or $20 for a DVD and written evaluation to take home covering the areas of hitting, fielding or pitching. 40th annual Winetaster’s Cup Golf Tournament June 24

Justin-Siena High School presents the 40th annual Winetaster’s Cup Golf Tournament on Tuesday, June 24 and Wednesday, June 25 at Silverado Resort. In celebration of the 40th year of the tournament, which benefits the athletic programs at Justin-Siena, NFL Executive Carmen Policy will serve as the event guest speaker.

Policy, an attorney and football executive, is best known for his work with the San Francisco 49ers during the 1980s and 1990s. He joined the 49ers in 1983 as vice president and counsel. In 1991, he became president and chief executive officer and played a key role in the 49ers’ Super Bowl victories in 1982, 1985, 1989, 1990 and 1995. In 1994 he was named the National Football League Executive of the Year by The Sporting News and Pro Football Weekly, as voted on by NFL owners and executives. The Sporting News and GQ also named him one of the Most Influential People in Professional Sports.

Policy later served as President & CEO of the Cleveland Browns and in that role worked as a member of the NFL Business Ventures Committee as well as the Super Bowl Advisory Committee. He also served as a member of the NFL Finance Committee. Policy has a home in the Napa Valley and is also a local vintner.

The Winetaster’s begins on June 24 at 6 p.m. with a wine country reception, dinner and live auction in the grove at Silverado. Then on June 25 golfers can play either a morning or afternoon round of golf at Silverado. Cocktails and an awards dinner for participating golfers will follow in the Silverado member’s clubhouse.

NVC summer youth basketball camps start July 7

Napa Valley College is putting on two basketball camps this summer.

A coed camp for boys and girls in the fifth through eighth grade is July 7-10. The second camp, for girls only in the seventh through 12th grade, is July 28-31.

The cost per session is $80. Sessions will be from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m., Monday through Thursday, in the NVC gym.

Both camp sessions will cover offensive and defensive fundamentals, ball handling and shooting. Teamwork and sportsmanship will also be stressed.

Justin-Siena tennis camp starts July 7

Looking to learn the game, or take your game to the next level and have some fun while you are at it? Justin-Siena High School is offering two week-long sessions geared toward elementary and middle school students with the goal of having fun and making you a better tennis player. Braves tennis coach Chris Swain will lead students through group activities and personalized instruction. Campers will learn the game and have a positive summertime experience while they are at it.

Session 1 is July 7-11 and Session 2 is July 14-18, from 9 a.m. to noon on the Justin-Siena High School tennis courts. The cost is $150 for one session and $250 for both sessions. Sixth Annual NVC Baseball Academy, July 7-10 and July 14-17

Napa Valley College’s baseball team will hold its sixth-annual baseball academy this summer.

Session I is July 7-10 from 10 a.m. until 3 p.m. Session II is July 14-17 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Ages 7-12 are welcome. Cost is $100 per session.

Storm head coach Bob Freschi will instruct both sessions as well as assistant coaches Tim Masters and Don Dubois and pitching coach Warren Brusstar. Freschi’s current ballplayers will also be on hand.

Basketball Jones day camps will be offered in Napa this summer.

Napa Camp No. 1 is  July 14 to 18 at St. Apollinaris. Napa Camp No. 2 is Aug. 11 to 15 at Napa Valley College.

There are 40 hours of instruction in a one-week Basketball Jones camp.

California Women’s State Championship July 14-16

The 13th annual California Women’s State Championship will be played at Hiddenbrooke Golf Club in Vallejo on July 14, 15 and 16. This event is open to all female amateurs who are California residents with a maximum U.S. Golf Association handicap-index of 10.4. There is no age restriction. It is sponsored by four of the California women’s golf associations: Pacific Women’s Golf Association, San Diego County Women’s Golf Association, Women’s Golf Association of Northern California and the Women’s Southern California Golf Association.

The purpose of this championship is to determine the California State Women’s Amateur Stroke Play Champion and to determine who will represent the State of California in the USGA State Team Matches, which are held every other year.

Last year’s event, won by Jenny Shin of Torrance, was held at Pala Mesa Resort in Fallbrooke.

The entry fee of $195 includes green fees, carts, range balls, a player’s reception on Monday afternoon and the awards on Wednesday afternoon. The format of the competition is 54 holes of stroke play at scratch.

Justin-Siena tackle football camp starts July 14

Justin-Siena High School is now taking sign ups for the second annual NFL-Junior Player Development Football Camp. The camp is for 11-14 year old boys and runs from July 14-19. Last year, 150 football players from Napa, Sonoma and Solano counties participated in this full-contact camp. Campers varied from experienced tackle football players to youths who were suiting up for the first time.

The camp runs from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. The school co-hosts this camp in cooperation with the National Football League. This camp is free, but you must register to attend due to limited space. The NFL provides all the equipment free of charge. Groups are divided by weight into three groups (small, medium, large) and will work with the Justin-Siena football coaching staff for the week on the fundamentals needed to be successful in football.

All players also receive free gifts during the week and an important life lesson is taught as the theme of the day.

Justin-Siena water polo camp set Aug. 11-15

The Justin-Siena water polo camp is open to boys and girls 8 to 18 years of age and will be held at Napa Valley College from Aug. 11 to 15, from 8 to 11 a.m. each day. It’s an introduction to water polo, for beginners, with individual and team strategy development for advanced players to be taught.

Instruction will include rules of the game, referee signals, eggbeater kick, individual ball handling skills (dribbling, passing, shooting, and drawing fouls), individual offensive and defensive game concepts and team strategies will be taught to all participants. Advanced instruction and conditioning will be offered to high school participants.

Camp staff will include Justin-Siena head aquatics coach Tom Coughlan as well as other highly qualified coaches in the area, former All-Americans and national team players.

The cost is $130 per camper. There is an additional $35 administrative registration fee. NHS football holds non-contact youth summer camp, July 28-Aug. 1

The 2007 CIF Sac-Joaquin Section Division I football champions will host a non-contact youth football camp for student-athletes from July 28-Aug. 1.

On Aug. 1, the campers will play football at Memorial Stadium followed by a BBQ.  

In addition to daily skill instruction in every football position, the camp will include a 7-on-7 passing tournament directed by the Indians’ football coaching staff. Any student-athlete entering fifth-eight grade may participate in this week-long, non-contact camp.

Napa head coach Troy Mott and his staff are excited to work with local athletes.

“Having played in the Napa youth football leagues myself, I am anxious to work with these kids,” Mott said. “We are going to inspire kids to play the game that has molded many of our student-athletes here at Napa High. Having grown up in our community it is important to me that we provide the best for our kids; this camp is going to educate them about conditioning, nutrition and all the values that playing football can teach.”

Napa will host the camp at its practice field, west of the weight room. The camp begins at 7:30 a.m. each morning and ends at 12:30 p.m. The cost is $195 per camper. Shannon Ridge Winery will host the final race of the 2008 USA Cycling Mountain Bike National Ultra-Endurance Calendar. Titled the Shannon Ridge Showdown, the event will take place in Clearlake Oaks in Lake County, Oct. 18-19.

The Shannon Ridge Showdown Ultra-Endurance race will be a 16-hour competition and the course itself is approximately 7.5 miles in length with over 1,700 feet of climbing per lap. The course route is a combination of single track, double track, fire access roads and vineyard rows. This is the first time that a USA Cycling Mountain Bike National Ultra Endurance Calendar series race course has included vineyards as part of the course route. The race and course is designed, promoted and directed by endurance racers. Ultra-Endurance racing is one the fastest growing forms of mountain bike racing.

The race will begin in front of the Shannon Ridge tasting room on Highway 20 in Clearlake Oaks at 4 p.m. on Oct. 18 and will end at 8 a.m. on Oct. 19 in the mountain vineyards directly across from the home of winery owners Clay and Margarita Shannon.

On line registration will open March 1. A USA Cycling Mountain Bike race license is required to compete. Registration closes Oct. 11 or when racer limit is reached (300 racers maximum). Raiders re-launch Spanish-language web site

The Oakland Raiders announced a technological and design re-launch of their Spanish web site. The re-launch will allow more Raider fans to interact with the Silver and Black in a platform fully developed to present Raiders football in the Spanish language.

Raidersenespanol.com was launched in 2002 as a Spanish version of the team’s official web site and throughout the years has evolved its own identity, as the Hispanic fan base of the Silver and Black continues to grow.

Among the features that the Spanish web site will now offer are exclusive editorials from international and local columnists, comprehensive tickets and suites informational sections, video programming, full game-day coverage, Raiders history as well as complete player biographies.

Senior Babe Ruth seeking manager

Napa Babe Ruth has an opening in its Senior Division (16-18 years) for a field manager.

The Senior Program starts in Mid-May and runs through the first week in July.

High school football officials needed

City of Napa offers softball league for those 50 and over

The city of Napa’s Community Resources Department is looking for players age 50 and over of all ability levels to participate in its fifth season of senior slow pitch softball. Games are on Tuesday nights at the JKF softball complex. Individuals must be age 50 or older or turning 50 in 2008.

Napa Screamers 14-and-under softball seeking players

The Napa Screamers 14-and-under tournament softball team is looking for two utility players to complete its 2008 roster. The Screamers team will compete in six summer tournaments, with the option of continuing into the fall. In 2007, the Screamers team earned first-, second- and third-place trophies.

The 2008 tournament season will begin in May, when high school play has concluded. Eligible players must be born in 1993 or 1994.

Napa Valley MAGA accepting new golf members

The Napa Valley Mexican American Golf Association is looking for new members. Men and women age 21 and older are eligible to join MAGA, which plays a tournament schedule monthly in Napa, Solano, Santa Rosa and Contra Costa counties.

There are also openings for directors on the organization’s board. This is the 39th year of Napa Valley MAGA.

Other tournaments of interest include Cinco de Mayo-Contra Costa (May 3 or 5), La Playa Classic (May 24-25), eight-man team competition (June 14), and the MAGA state tournament (Aug. 29-31).

Napa Saints cheer coaches needed

The award-winning Napa Saints cheer program is now accepting applications for all coaching positions for the 2008 season. Interviews will begin in February and March. Head coaches must be 21 years of age, assistant coaches 18 years of age, and junior coaches between the ages of 14-17. Cheer and/or dance experience is desired.

Napa Golf Course offers lesson programs for couples, women and juniors

Napa Golf Course at Kennedy Park is offering a lesson schedule designed for couples, juniors and women.

• Couples golf Saturday’s is a clinic designed for players of all caliber that would like to learn the game of golf with their husband, or wife, or significant other in a casual setting. Students should have some experience but it is not required. The fee is $150 per couple. The five sessions will include fundamentals of golf and on-course instruction. All classes are one hour in duration and classes are limited to the first four couples. It runs June 21 to July 19, Aug. 2 to Aug. 30, and Sept. 6 to Oct. 4, from 10 to 11 a.m. To register, call the Napa Golf Course pro shop at 255-4333.

• A ladies night out clinic for those 18 and over has been the most popular clinic at Napa Golf Course. Attendees will enjoy a more relaxing atmosphere of learning. This class is for the beginner or the novice that is looking to improve their game. The class runs June 30 to July 28, Aug. 11 to Sept. 15, and Sept. 29 to Oct. 27, from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. The cost is $80. To register, call the Napa Golf Course pro shop at 255-4333.

• A ladies Sunday clinic is designed to assist participants to further their knowledge and skills and concentrate on the actual playing of the game. Participants must have completed a “Ladies Night Out” clinic or have a knowledge of the game that is above the beginner level and own a set of golf clubs. The cost is $80. Classes run July 6 to Aug. 3, Aug. 17 to Sept. 14, and Sept. 28 to Oct. 26, from 10 to 11:15 a.m. To register, call the Napa Golf Course pro shop at 255-4333.

• A junior golf camp offers classes for youths from the ages of 6 to 12 that have none or a limited knowledge of the game of golf. The focus is to make the game fun, while giving students the basic fundamentals of the modern golf swing. It is recommended that students bring their own clubs, but a limited amount of clubs will be available for use. The cost is $99. There are five 1 1/2-hour classes to include the basic fundamentals of golf. • A juniors “next level” class targets the intermediate junior, ages 13 to 17, that would like to improve to a more competitive level. Course management and strategy will be emphasized while building on a strong fundamental base. Students will have the opportunity to play golf on the course depending on their grasp of the game. The cost is $99 for five one-hour classes to include advanced instruction and on course training on etiquette and course management.
