The Napa police are doing their part this Friday to get drunk drivers off the road.

They will be conducting DUI saturation patrols within the city limits. The patrols will be in areas where there has been a high number of traffic crashes and arrests involving drunk drivers.
Napa police is attempting to cut down on collisions involving DUI drivers. Police suggest those who have been drinking and believe they need to get behind the wheel of a car to call a cab, a friend, take the bus or walk.

The funding for the DUI saturation patrols comes from a grant received from the California Office of Traffic Safety through the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.

" Ok folks here is your warning. Beware. Don't let it be you and then complain about it. "

" I have a friend who got a sobriety test at a check point, and even though he passed a breathalyser, he couldn't keep his balance due to having had a stroke some years previous. They arrested him for DUI (unknown substance), he went to court with a letter from his doctor, and the judge dismissed the charge. However, the DUI arrest remained on his record, he had to still pay the outrageous towing and storage charges, spent several hours in jail, and his insurance premiums went sky high. He fought to rectify it all, but at every turn was told, "That's too bad." "

" How about just don't drink and drive every day??? Simple rule to follow and it makes for safer roads for all. "

" It's time to fill the city coffers with your hard earned cash...so what we didn't already take out of your paycheck before you were paid, we will take now thank you. And keep buying all that booze and getting drunk at all those fancy restaurants in Napa because we clean up there too. Gosh, we really appreciate the customers of Napa and all that money they have consented to donating to the city so we can guarantee our high salaries and entitlements that we voted to give ourselves. And you thought Scott Mc Clellan was the only former government employee with a conscience....ha! Thank goodness for public schools and the dumbing down of America because we have got you right where we want you. Now just empty your pockets please....and like it! "

" And yet officers will never do a "saturation patrol" for DUI offenders just north of Yountville on hwy 29 south between the hours of 3PM and 10PM. Just think of all those people consuming bottles and bottles of yummy wine with fabulous dinners. I pray that some drunken tourist doesn't kill a member of your family. "

" It would be nice if we all cared about each other enough to not get behind the wheel of a car drunk and risk other people's lives. But there are a lot of selfish people out there. Maybe people would feel differently about these DUI patrols if they had lost a loved one to a drunk driver. Keeping me and my family safe from idiots who don't care is a great way to spend my tax money, thank you. "

" DUI check points are great. Maybe after they arrest all of the drunks, the cops can cruise through the neighborhoods and try to catch some vandals in this town. Proactive policing is a great thing. "

" Marsha -- there are always cops up north of Yountville. Either Sheriffs or CHP. Seems like every time I go up to Rutherford Grill I see somebody pulled over in that area... "

" petebo --- get over yourself. NOBODY at any time should drink and drive and if you are stupid enough to do it and get caught then shame on you. I think the fines for drinking and driving are NOT HIGH ENOUGH. If you make people pay in a way that is harmful to their financial future maybe they won't do it again. Again there is NO EXCUSE for drinking and driving.

Dwayne that is too bad for your friend and the city should have removed all the fines and ticket from his record. If he was not drinking and had a legitimate reason he should go after the city for his money. This is completely unacceptable behaviour from the city of napa. "

" Dwayne---- I cannot believe that they wouldn't take that DUI off this gentlemans record!! That is SO not right!! I know in this sue happy times what I'm going to say may rub some people's nerves, but should the PD be liable for the rise in his insurance cost, towing and storage fees?? I mean come on!! He proved he was not drunk or high! I'm sorry but "that's too bad" doesn't cut it. "

" Baraki:

I agree that there are Sheriffs and CHPs doing routine patrol north of Yountville, I see them there all the time as well. My concern is that Napa Valley encourages alcohol consumption, either by tasting at multiple wineries or pairing wine with world-class cuisine, creating hundreds of drivers with alcohol in their bloodstream. I believe that the DUI checkpoints are set up close to town so law enforcement can say they are spending money for the purpose it was appointed, yet without stepping on the toes of the tourist industry. While a single officer has someone pulled over north of town, dozens of alcohol-fueled drivers cruise right on by. My opinion on this is that it is biased law enforcement. You will never get the Sheriff's Dept or CHP to admit they are bowing to political pressure, but it is what it is. "

" Big Vineyard - who do they think they are? with their wind machines, non affirmative action hiring practices, encouraging tourists to get blottoed.... and now they have the sherrif in their pocket. Sounds like a prequel of next seasons 24. Where are you special agent jack bauer? "

" It is a great credit to the Napa PD that they are jumping through the hoops necessary to obtain State and Federal money for DUI checkpoints and enforcement within their city. They are trying to make their city safer, but they are not responsible for upvalley. Sheriffs and CHP cannot place a DUI checkpoint on Highway 29 or the trail because those roads do not meet the srtict requirements for checkpoints. Can you imagine the traffic backup, the number of rear-end accidents, and the combined howl of us locals if they did checkpoints up there? Unfortunately, the Sheriff's Department and CHP are pretty sparse up there, and St. Helena and Calistoga only have enough officers to field one or two at a time.....mostly one. That's a common law enforcement problem in rural areas. I doubt there is a winemaker's conspiracy to not arrest drunk drivers upvalley. Napa City just has its act together on it. "

petebo wrote on May 29, 2008 4:41 PM:

" The only point I am making average_jane is that the government taxes the booze when it allows it to be sold to you at dinner so that they can then pop you and drain your pockets. Why do they allow booze at restaurants if they KNOW people are going to drink and drive. Don't be so close minded and look at what is happening around you. You consented to all of it. "

asahigo wrote on May 29, 2008 6:31 PM:

" MarshaMarsha so should we stop serving wine? It's a little thing called personal responsibility. You have a choice, you do not have to drink wine, if you do you do not have to get behind the wheel of a car. "

Dwayne wrote on May 29, 2008 6:56 PM:

" It's not a "winemaker's conspiracy", it's a political bias that's denied by the authorities to preserve the huge contributions that are made to the powers that be.... "

" take a look at the dui arrests for napa, how many of these arrested people are from napa county, how many are not? huge differance! its good that drunk drivers are being arrested, but lets not play favorites, lets get the tourists too. then maybe the streets of napa wont be so congested after a while of realizing that they too(tourists) are not excluded from dui! local or not, please dont kill my family with your car! "

wtrfwlr wrote on May 31, 2008 10:01 AM:

" the law enforcement agentcies in this county know who they are pulling over, the locals are the only ones who are ever doing the posted speed limit! when was the last time that any of you locals saw a tourist actually doing the speed limit? pretty easy to determine who to pull over. lets not scare off our tourists! what a joke.
