Matthew Wilson and Gina Drohan want every “body” to enjoy the benefits of massage. With that goal in mind, the two have opened Napa’s first Massage Envy, in Redwood Plaza.

“Napa is a great location because in a sense it’s a massage town,” said Wilson. But while many visitors take advantage of massage at Napa Valley spas and resorts, locals can’t always afford to spend $100, or more, on a treatment, he said.
Enter Massage Envy.

The franchised business works the same as gym and tanning salon memberships.
For a monthly fee of $59, members receive one 60-minute massage session. Additional massages are then scheduled as needed, from $39 and up. Those new to massage or the business can try out Massage Envy for an introductory rate of $39 for an initial massage.

Massage Envy welcomes same day appointments and even walk-in visitors. Fifteen treatment rooms and massage therapists await those with tight shoulders, aching backs or sore muscles.
Clients enter through a typical front office, but soon move to a “Quiet Room” featuring dimmed lights, tea, soft music and a waterfall.

The transition helps the guest relax and unwind, said Drohan.

A massage therapist then greets each client and completes a brief interview about any specific needs or relevant medical conditions. Escorted to one of the treatment rooms, the massage begins.

Each treatment is customized from a range of massage styles including Swedish, deep tissue, sports, prenatal, reflexology or hot stone, said Drohan. Instead of sticky oils, gels — lotions and creams are used, allowing a member to return to work or other activities without needing to shower after a treatment.

Wilson and Drohan already have some experience with Massage Envy. The couple also own a Massage Envy in Petaluma. The Napa clinic is their second.

“We were looking to start a business together,” said Drohan. After a visit to another Massage Envy location, Drohan, a massage therapist herself, realized she was onto something.

“Two weeks later we were in Arizona meeting the Massage Envy CEO,” she said. “Talk about fate.”

Massage Envy, based in Arizona, was established in 2002 and now features more than 400 franchises nationwide. The Napa location is the seventh in the North Bay, said Drohan.

Wilson and Drohan always planned on opening a second franchise — it was just a matter of finding the right location.

Wilson said he drove all over Napa County looking for the right spot. At first they considered Bel Aire Plaza. But it was too chaotic, and the right size space wasn’t available, he added.

After visiting Redwood Plaza, the pair identified a corner spot with plenty of square feet. Sealing the deal, Massage Envy opened in early May.

While Wilson has kept his job with Raley’s corporate offices, he is actively involved in the two clinics. Drohan said she primarily manages the Petaluma clinic, while manager Alex Hall runs the Massage Envy in Napa. The couple live in Novato.

Together the two locations will eventually employ more than 70 massage therapists, they said.

Massage Envy only hires certified massage therapists, said Drohan. Additionally, each employee must have appropriate permits from the city of Napa.

Clinic hours certainly encourage visits for any busy schedule. Opening at 8 a.m., on most days, on Monday through Friday, Massage Envy is open until 10 p.m., also with weekend hours.

" I ran into your booth at the Chamber of Commerce Business Expo earlier this year and I thought to myself - hmm looks interesting. Then I went to the company website and I was SO excited that you decided to come to Napa!

I've been trying to talk my husband into getting a massage, but all the pricey spas around here have pushed out the locals - who has an extra $330 for a one hour massge?!

I can't wait to visit your facility and I look forward to MANY relaxing visits! Thank you! Thank you! Thank you! "
