Organizers of the new Chefs Market on Thursday said it was a success, but some attendees said they needed to get used to the move from Fridays to Thursdays.

Regardless of the day of the week, plenty of Napans seemed to be sipping wine, listening to music and watching cooking demonstrations after the 5 p.m. premiere of this year’s market.
Also on the move this year was the popular children’s activity area. It is still on Coombs Street, but on the opposite side of First Street. Moms and strollers were parked bumper to bumper as toddlers on up enjoyed the hands-on activities spearheaded by Scientopia Discovery Center Inc., which was a trumpeting a fall opening of their business in Napa. Youngsters also gave a climbing wall a workout.

Lotte Cosca of Napa watched her two children try out the hands-on exhibits at Scientopia.
Cosca said she was OK with the move to Thursday night, even with school-age children.

“Once school gets out it’ll be easier,” to visit the market on Thursday night, she said.
“It’ll be interesting to see how this (new night) plays out,” she said. “They have a kid’s section and that’s what I like.”

Napan Pam Schultz enjoyed herself at the market.

“Heirloom tomatoes, a glass of chardonnay and life is good,” said Schultz.

She and her doubles tennis partner, Barbara Breeze, came to hear live music.

“It’s nice to see people out,” Schultz said, adding that she wasn’t completely sold yet on the switch from Friday to Thursday nights.

At Small World Cafe, co-owner Jennifer Alimusa said, they would close at their regular 8:30 p.m. time, despite the Chefs Market.

Alimusa thought her dinner crowd seemed a bit lighter than usual.

The restaurant owner did like the idea of booths lining both sides of Coombs Street in front of the restaurant she co-owns with her husband — because it might help increase business.

Ami Mautner, owner of Napa Valley Apothecary, is no stranger to the Chefs Market. She used to have a wagon of her lotions, herbs, bath salts, crystals she sold at the Friday night venue.

Now Mautner has her business in a storefront on First Street near the Christian Science Reading Room.

Mautner, who opened her business in December, has been open Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays. She decided to open Thursdays just for the Chefs Market crowd.

Farmers market vendor Veronica Aguilera came from Turlock with her farm stand of cherries and other fruit and vegetables.

“I like it,” she said of the initial crowds. “I hope it’s going to be as busy as Friday nights.”

Down the street, jazz played in the “Chefs Court” as Bette Vreeland of Napa waited patiently for Tim Hanni’s cooking demo to start.

Advertised to start at 5:30 p.m., all chairs were filled, but the cooking hadn’t yet fired up. Even with a late start, the market was “pretty lively for this early in the night,” she said.

“It feels a little spotty (between) vendors, but there’s a good amount of people,” said Vreeland.

Electing not to participate in the market this year, all was quiet within the Napa Town Center. A pair of private security guards walked through and most stores appeared to be closed. A handful of teens quietly congregated near the side entrance to Mervyn’s.

Back on First Street, Lynn Everett of Napa and friend Deanna Stellina enjoyed a glass of wine.

“I would prefer the market to be on Friday night, for us that worked,” said Everett.

Stellina also liked the Friday night event, “It was like a relief at the end of the week,” she said.

Michelle Remmick, of Napa, stood waiting for the band Rocky and the Revelettes to start playing. She said she always comes to the opening night of Chefs Market.

“Thursday night is good,” she said. “It’s not a weekend night, it’s the precursor to the weekend.”

Remmick said she wasn’t phased by the new night. “It seems similar to last year, just a different night.”

At the west end of First Street, standing next to a apple-red motorized rickshaw, Israel Valencia with NV Hoppers was waiting for fares.

Valencia said he planned to circle the market during the night to pick up riders in the rickshaw, each fitting two to three people.

By 6:30 p.m., Ron Gibson, one of the event organizers, estimated the crowd at 3,000.

“I think we’ve got nothing less than smash hit on our hands. And we want people to come and enjoy it,” said Gibson.

Dont get use to it Mr. Gibson. This years Chef Market is sad compared to last year.

I know this is your party and you are here to make money not to enterain the average citizen of Napa. But if you want us to continue coming you need to make it alot more interesting. I know from past you will act like you are interested to what we think but will do nothing.

From what I see this will be the last year and that's saddens me. Unless you change things NOW!!!! "

" It is really too bad that the event had to moved to Thursday nights. But it is still too many teenagers running around; plenty of smokers exhaling their filth (amongst small children even!); and too many drunks stubling about in the later hours. A great time had by all!

But hey it is THE ONLY THING LOCALS can call our own! Whooooo hoooo! "

" I'm 30 myself, but I feel bad for the teens and young adults which are intentionally being "planned out" of the Chef's Market. With the City down on almost anything businesses try and do that would be fun locally for that age group (SmokingCat) and now Chef's Market continuing to try and squeeze them out, what's left in town?

If we don't want teens and young adults hanging around or causing trouble, what are we hoping they'll get involved in? What are we helping them get involved in?

I'd like to see a list made by the City on what they think the youth could do that's fun and low cost. "

NapaNana wrote on May 23, 2008 10:12 AM:

" 707jng.......Where do you get your information that ALL teenagers are trouble makers and drug addicts? Maybe in your circle sweetheart, but not in everyones. You were right about one thing...there isn't much for the teenagers to do in this town. Where would you suggest that these teenagers go out of town? They shouldn't have to. But, this is a "tourist" town not a "teenager" town.
I am so sorry that you have such a closed mind and a bad attitude.
Now.....Chefs Market......Time wil tell if the new day and time will effect business. I don't see how having it on a week night is going to bring in the crowds with work/school the next day. Even the people that set up the booths have to work the next day. the weekend tourists will miss it too. Isn't that part of why we have a Chefs Market? To show the travelers just how sweet and quaint Napa is? Yeah...
It does seem that they have taken a good thing and are trying to squeeze it out. Just MY opinion. "

And missed all the tables of goodies that used to be in the Town Center. But saw lots of people, lots of friends, and saw Greg Cole do his demonstration for shrimp and got the recipe! Will try that on on the BBQ this weekend. I know last year I was upset about it being on a week night/work night. But, I'll get used to it- I slept in until 5:30AM and skipped the gym this morning. This is even worse than I expected. If the Downtown Marketing Assocation was looking to push away ALL of the locals then you have a "smah hit".

There is even LESS to do now than ever before. It looked empty!.

Now if the DMA is looking to attract the tourist and the nose in the air baby boomer that lives here, then you have a "smash hit"........

Either way it is bad (especially on Thursday Nights) and I won't be attending and will pass these same words of wisdom on to all I know.

Don't waste your time.
Go to the store, buy a bottle of wine, a 6 pack of beer, a nice slab of meat from the butcher, and some goods from the produce section.
Light up the BBQ, pop in a good CD, and WHOALA you have your own Chef's Market in your own backyard!

And you don'y have to deal with all of the other BS!! "

If you dont think the kids here are addicts and trouble makers then you are the one with a closed mind and part of the problem. People think that our city is so perfect and no one has a problem. Sorry to inform you guys, but Napa isnt the perfect little town you want it to be.

Kids are becoming addicts before they graduate and are turning to alternate means or income to satisfy those addictions. Trust me, I've seen it first hand and continue to see it first hand amongst the crowds.

So, deny it all you like, but youre just part of the problem. "

Some with lots of money...some without any. If you think that Money has anything to do with MORAL VALUES and RESPECT AND RESPONSIBILITY you should do some more research before you make such a claim. Your generalization of ALL kids being on drugs and in trouble is way off.
As far as I can tell people that calim that someone else is a part of a problem that they don't understand, Is just full of hot air.....point a finger....how many are pointing back at you?
Napa has changed? Really? SHOCK! So has the rest of the world. And it is going to keep changing. It isn't going to stop because you want it too. If you have been in Napa for any length of time, you would have been watching the gradual transformation. Is it just NOW that people are seeing it?
I have been here more than 40 years. I have raised all of my sons here. It is becoming more difficult for the teens to find things to do here that are constructive. The Chefs Market should have been a good place for the kids to meet up and have a lot of fun.....but because of the "few" that are there for trouble to give ALL Napa kids a bad name is just plain dumb.
Should have been paying attention. "

" I think the market is a complete waste of time. The one vendor's fruit was so hard you could play baseball with it. The same vegetable guy, and one cherry vendor. The same food vendors, and crappy crafts. I have been to many markets in various cities and this one is truly a joke. Get it together and put some vendors in there that are worth our efforts or close the thing down all together. You should be ashamed to call this a chef's market as the chef's are shoved off in the corner somewhere and it is definitley not a Farmer's Market by any sense of the word. Truly a boring, laughable attempt. So sad!!!! "

psychochik wrote on May 23, 2008 2:58 PM:

" No problem !

I hate reading comments of the true close minded individuals saying the ones that have been there, done that are the close minded ones.

I am dealing with a problem friend right now. He is getting ready to graduate and might not because of a drug problem that continues to get worse each day.

And he's no gang banger, hes not from a poor family, he is well off, smart, and even in varsity sports at his school, so its not just the lower income kids that have problems. In fact, I think the problems may be worse amongst the richer kids due to their parents disposable income. These parents ignore the problems until they are to big to handle and its saddening, but hey, its not a problem in our town if you ask the likes of Nana. :( "

707jng wrote on May 23, 2008 3:17 PM:

" NapaNana, please re-read my second statement, I agree my last statement was little generalized but you've got to admit there are more and more of these kids all over Napa, and what I was trying to say is that it may be less of a problem if the city would allow more places for these kids to get together. There's nowhere and nothing for teens and young adults to do in this town, so they revert to getting high.

to psychochik - you've got a point about the wealthier kids having more of a problem, I never thought of it that way but it makes perfect sense. AND my hopes and prayers to your friend! I hope he sees where his lifestyle is going to lead and goes the other way. Having been there done that in my youth, I know how rough of a road it is. He's going to need good friends by his side... :)~ hint hint :)~ "

" This was my first Chef's Market, so I can't comment on whether Thursday night is better than Friday night. But I must say, having moved to Napa this past month and looking forward to a "market night", I was very disappointed. Only 3 fresh food vendors and lots of chotchke. It lacked a sense of community and had no social feel at all. There was no common area where families and friends could spread out a blanket and enjoy the music and festivities. IMHO the town of Sonoma's Tuesday night market is a much nicer experience. Pack a picnic, lay a blanket out, buy some produce, open a bottle of wine and enjoy the evening. I'll make the drive back to Sonoma on Tuesday evenings and skip the Chef's Market on Thursdays. Sorry Napa. "

" Sorry to hear of your friends drug problem psycochik.....When did I say that there wasn't a problem here? I said it has been changing for a long time and now people are starting to what...panic about it? You were right about the fact that drug education and prevention should start at home. And it is sad that too many parents bury their heads in the sand and just plan to pay for rehab when the time comes. I agree too that it isn't just a "poor" family problem. In fact back when I was in High School most of the big dealers were of the wealthier families.
Napa has always had an issue with not having enough constructive entertainment for teens. There has been many attempts to provide places for them to go, but have mostly failed. It is the same old problem here. Just more amplified because Napa has grown so much and there are more teenagers on the loose for something to do. Also I think that the next generation is coming up and seeing what a mess it is......... "

" The problem if any seems to be with Napan's continual state of displeasure and intolerance of anything new. There is a culture of apathyhere, of stubborness and downright misery. No other town seems to have any problems with their weeknight Farmer's markets as evidenced by the highly successful Sonoma and Marin Co. markets. It is no BIG thing!
Napans seem to want to live in a bubble, closed off to the outside world and believing that Napa is the center of the Universe. Every little thing becomes huge, analyzed and debated to the 'nth degree. The culture of "Woe is me", is so pervasive and it is the worst aspect of Napa's personality. The changes need to come from within each and every individual who uses these forums to communicate and to complain. It is not the city government's problem to ensure your personal contentment.
There needs to be an injection of energy and enthusiasm instead of relying on the apathy of doing nothing and being able to point the finger at everyone who works to make a change. Not all change is going to be wonderful but, someone is at least doing something. As it stands at this point in time, the only joy, enthusiasm and appreciation of Napa comes from tourists. "

What do they have to do with a "chefs market"? I have a friend that actually sells food down there and I hear about the politics of the organizers.
It seems, Every time they change something, it becomes less popular. Remember when they tried to make a buck on everything, by requiring drink and food tickets a couple of years ago?
What a debacle that was. Food vendors threatened to pull out. Most of the food vendors have real jobs and they are not going to want to set everything up on a Thursday night, clean it all up and get back to work on Friday. I think it will become a "kidfest" on Thursdays. Working adults will not want to drink wine and go out on a Thurday nights before work on Friday and all the kids won't care because they'll be out of school. Last thursday cannot be used to judge the success. The first chefs market of the year is always crowded. Wait a couple of weeks and see the attendance.
BTW, The two biggest restaurant complainer's about the chefs market taking business from them on Friday are no longer in business. Go figure. "

So as I was driving out of the garage, there's a small group of twits (yes I mean teens, but the word twits fits this particular group) and they see me coming. They're in the middle of the road and DON'T EVEN MOVE. I'm like a foot away from them in my car. So obviously I stop and the they look at me with a "what??" look on their face. So I mouth please move and one of the little twits deams to roll her eyes at me!!! I'm sorry, but it's teens like these that give all of the other ones a bad reputation. I would be mortified if I knew my child was acting like that in public. Not only that, but as I'm coming out of Mervyn's there's a small group of young men in front of the store rapping, yes, rapping. And the words that were coming out of their mouths, UGH!! These young men didn't need a bar of soap to wash out their mouths, they needed a whole detergent bottle! Is this what I have to look forward to if I want to stay in Napa and enjoy the chef's market?
