Home Depot Builds Community Garden at the Nest gallery

On a perfect May day, 13 enthusiastic Napa Home Depot department managers in bright orange T-shirts took over the Nest gallery in Napa

Team Depot is the store’s volunteer force dedicated to meeting community needs through hands-on service. This team has helped with several Napa-based projects including Playground Fantastico, low-income housing and other landscaping projects.

Without hesitation, they agreed to help create the Nest’s new “Giving Garden,” which will grow herbs, vegetables and flowers for those in need and anyone who contributes to the garden’s development. Team Depot installed new gravel and pots, and even painted the picket fence. Home Depot donated all of the materials, including tons of healthy veggies and herbs, which were planted during Community Planting Day Saturday.

The garden was designed by Emmanuel Donval of Green Cherry as a “repurposed garden” featuring recycled tires, doors, bottles, barrel rims and other found materials. The space is also a “hang-out garden” with a cool cactus garden, picnic area and garden art. Nest founders Ann Trinca and Norma Quintana hope that the space will be a regular venue for both special events and spontaneous gatherings.

The completed design will be unveiled on Thursday, May 15 from 6 am to 8 p.m. during the opening of the new Nest exhibit “Avant-Garden” with artwork by Lewis deSoto, Joyce Hsu and Carrie Lederer, special guest singer Maria Marquez, and food by YES chef.

The Nest is Napa’s art gallery/consignment store where you can find art, crafts and creative home décor, and now, grow things too. Their mission is to live creatively and give generously. A portion of profits are set aside to build the “Nest Egg” grants, which will be awarded to local artists and arts organizations through the Arts Council of Napa Valley.
