9:30 a.m.The U.S. Bureau of Reclamation will be closing the Pope Creek Bridge waterway at Lake Berryessa for the Memorial Day, Fourth of July and Labor Day holidays.

Historically, thousands of people have gathered in this area, both on shore and on boats, to celebrate the major holidays of summer. There have been many incidents of boat overcrowding, near drownings, disorderly conduct, underage drinking and assaults, officials said.
Major injuries and several deaths have occurred when people have jumped off the bridge and high rocks, the bureau said.

Closure dates:
• Memorial Day Weekend — 1 p.m. Thursday, May 22, to 3 p.m. on Tuesday, May 27.

• Independence Day Weekend — 1 p.m. Thursday, July 3, to 3 p.m. on Tuesday, July 8.
• Labor Day Weekend — 1 p.m. on Thursday, Aug. 28, to 3 p.m. on Tuesday, Sept. 2.

The Pope Creek parking lot will remain open during these closure periods, but the gate will be locked at 9 p.m.

" Yep. The overcrowded boats, near drownings, disorderly conduct, underage drinking and assaults sure sound fun. "

" Byoung - As an 89 grad of NHS and lifetime citizen of Napa I spent many summers at the Lake and especially at the bridge. Lots of partying, underage drinking and just bad things happen there. I for one am happy to see them close it off because there are too many bad people that go there to ruin for the others. Let it stay closed on majoy holiday weekends and the safer the lake will be. "

" Shades of another conversation here recently - let's take away everyone's freedom so the government can protect us from ourselves.

Surely there are better ways to keep the peace? We can inflitrate the Mafia and the drug gangs but we can't get someone inside this to identify the troublemakers? Everyone has to be limited because of the actions of a very small number of maladjusted souls? "

" Last year the cove was closed to boats, but you could still hike down to the water and swim. The boaters simply tied together into a giant raft just 100 yards from the lake side of the bridge. The water cops were all over that as well, checking ID's of anyone they saw drinking and then telling anyone that they cited to leave the area. If you plan on being in the water on any of these holidays the water cops will cite you for ANYTHING. This is their response to severe criticism in past years where the public claimed that the police weren't doing enough at the lake. If the added security saves just one life all summer then it's worth the hassle. "

" If they really want to make it safer they should drain that dangerous water out of the lake so nobody can drown.

You'd think it would be easier to keep tabs on the wild bunch if you kept them in one place rather than scatter them all over the place.

" Wow, we don't need to be responsible for ourselves! The government will do it for us! Let's party on the Third Street bridge instead...it will be open! "

" I am glad to hear about the closures. I too used to go up there and party when I was underage. I remember people jumping off the bridge, rocks, etc. It was like a weekend long party that was pretty much out of contol. I look back now and realize that the drownings that took place could have been me when I jumped off the rocks. I remember how difficult and dangerous it was to try and swim around the boats. I remember all the broken glass all over the ground, cutting thru flip flops. All the trash, etc. Not a good place to be, and not one that I want my younger cousins to be at. I understand everyone outrage in a way over the government controlling us, etc, but you need to understand, they are doing it for everyones good. Do you not remember the little girl that died up there last year? They are trying to save lives and keep people from getting hurt. If you arent one up there drinking and boating, giving alcohol to minors, etc, then you have nothing to really worry about no do you? "

" Before this turns into another 100 comment debatacle, I will remind everyone that last year, BLM placed a floating barrier to block off access to "The Rock". This was a great way to keep people from there, but everyone just posted up on the barrier, and partied right there. Only a good 100 feet or so from the origonal spot. What their doings isnt helping. " I’m sorry, I just don’t get it. How is it that so many of the comments here are in support of this un-necessary government intervention? I don’t need my government to protect me from myself. How could so many of you think that their action is acceptable? What about the fisherman, the kayaker? This isn’t about safety; it’s about denying us access to our federal land, just like the big Island. The BOR is out of control.

Remember last year when the Japanese student was killed when he feel off half dome in Yosemite? Why haven’t they closed half dome?

" as a former bridge jumper and partier i have to say i think closing down the bridge and the water way is nothing more than a smoke screen. people are still gonna get drunk and do stupid things no matter what. hundrds of people are gonna die on the highways this memorial weekend yet no one is suggesting we shut down the freeways. i think just posting a cop on the bridge and on the rock would eliminate anyone jumping. why does the entire area need to be shut down? "

plasticpinkflamingo wrote on May 14, 2008 5:13 PM:

" Yes it is so sad how many people are willing to just go along with whatever the government says. Just say it will be safer and they all jump in line!

Did any of them bother to think that maybe the troublemakers will just break into the area (as has already been noted), or worse yet, go somewhere else and cause even more trouble. I guess we will have to have a policeman on every square yard of our country and then these people will feel safe.

How I wish there was another unexplored continent or large island where some of us could go and start over again. Problem is, all these "protect me's" will all want to follow us.

We're doomed! (C3PO) "

" Here’s the last sentence in the article. “The Pope Creek parking lot will remain open during these closure periods, but the gate will be locked at 9 p.m.” Does that mean that the day use people will be able to walk down to the water and swim to the rocks but those with boats are denied access to the same area? Weird. "

" having lost my son because he jumped from that Rock 4 years ago ... I for one applaud the decisions to stop anyone from jumping from the Bridge OR the Rock.
A part of me died that day .... I'll never be the same person again.
Matthew's body was recovered 80 feet down by a Diver who had special equipment and he says there's many bodies that are still trapped in the Lake.
It was bad enuff to have a Memorial with no body, then to have a closed casket because of the water damage but to be one of the parents who's son or daughter was never recovered?

In reading everyones opinions, I can understand how you feel as you feel about yes, stop the jumpings, no... let everyone be free to do what they want.

But, not having my son around to hug and not having my son around to watch grow up, get married, have kids ... makes me grateful for the bans they have placed so maybe ... just maybe, another family won't have this pain in their hearts.
I love you Matthew "
