In a spacious, fresh-smelling playroom on Napa’s south side, 11 dogs are romping. Some are small — a sleek pug, a shy Chihuahua — while others, like Black Labrador siblings Jack and Jill, are large and sturdy.
They’re all guests at Ruff Dog Daycare + Hotel, a new business that opened last month on Industrial Court. And every one is having a blast — even Dallas, the Chihuahua, who needed some lap time in the hotel’s front office before joining the group.
“He’s a little sad,” said manager Lydia Clarke as she cuddled the big-eyed pup. But after some one-on-one attention, Dallas was ready to jump into the frolicking fray, supervised by attendant and ball-thrower Dena Austin.
It’s just another day at Napa County’s first all-inclusive resort and day-care center for dogs.
Human visitors to the Napa Valley have long had their pick of lodging places, from basic motels to luxurious inns. Working parents who live here have their choice of day-care centers for small children.
But for quadrupeds, there haven’t been so many options — until this year, when Theresa and Shane Holden opened Ruff.
The Holdens cherish their two trim pugs, Ella and Ned. But with Shane in the Coast Guard and Theresa busy with her career in sales management, the couple can’t always be with their beloved pets.
In Los Angeles, where the Holdens currently live, deluxe dog accommodations are available for day and overnight care.
While Napa County has its share of boarding kennels, the couple wanted something more — and, they figured, they couldn’t be the only people who feel that way about their pets.
“It was a small idea that became a really big, fabulous project,” said Theresa Holden. “Ned and Ella are part of our lives, and we wanted a facility in Napa that would be what we’d want them to have.”
Holden’s father, the talented Napa contractor Rick Arrieta, designed and built Ruff’s facility at 29 Enterprise Court, reached from Kaiser Road.
It features spacious, individual cubicles with designer cushions, painted wooden walls and airy screened doors. Some spaces even have flat-screen TVs to entertain their canine occupants.
“We wanted dogs to have a very similar life to what they have at home,” Theresa said. “We have rooms that look, actually, like rooms, as opposed to kennels or dog runs.”
Along with overnight stays, Ruff provides day care for dogs whose owners are at work (or at play) in the Napa Valley.
Day dogs can join the boarders in social frolicking or receive more individual attention through Ruff’s Personal Service Program, which provides one-on-one care away from other guests.
When they’re not resting or eating in privacy, visiting dogs socialize and play together in a two-level, 1,500-square-foot playroom and adjoining 4,000 square feet of grassy run, complete with a wading pool.
“They’re enjoying their time just as much as their parents who are away,” said Holden, adding that extra services — treats, special games of fetch, grooming and baths, for instance — are available á la carte.
Ruff also offers pet owners Web access to its security cameras, which are trained on common areas but can be aimed at private cubicles when dogs are napping.
“The owners have access all day,” said Clarke,
Clarke and Austin keep the facility scrupulously clean and odorless: “A lot of times, aggressive behavior comes out because of the scent of another dog,” Clarke explained. “We keep it kind of neutral.”
The lobby boasts a small, but well-chosen collection of unusual dog toys and treats, and even a selection of elegantly-designed cat scratchers — Ruff has a section of private cubicles for cats as well, and feline guests are sometimes allowed a little supervised roaming once the dogs are in their cubicles at night.
