DUI checkpoint set

Napa drivers better steer clear of driving while under the influence this weekend.

Napa police will conduct a DUI checkpoint on Saturday.
Although police are tight-lipped about the exact location of the checkpoint, they said it will be within the city limits in an area that has seen a high number of collisions, involving those involving drunk drivers.

The goal of the DUI checkpoint is to get unlicensed drivers off the road and arrest those who are driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs.
The funding for DUI checkpoint comes from a grant the police department received from the California Office of Traffic Safety.

" If you are interested in getting unlicensed drivers off the road set up a check point at the flea market or walmart that will get a majority off the road. "

" Try Silverado Trail and Trancas between 5 - 10 pm catching all of the tourists after wine tasting......

Try Solano Ave on the way to the hotels there as well......

Try first Street leaving the Oxbow from Copia, and the other direction when all the tourists leave all the downtown tasting rooms..... think anyone is leaving these areas a little toasted???

Oh wait, we might make the winery owners upset, and we can't do that now could we... If word got out that Napa does not STAND for drunk driving EVEN FROM TOURISTS, our poor little winery owners would cause a riot! "

" They shouldn't call it a DUI check point. I've been through several of them, and all they ask for is a license. I don't even believe they need a grant for that. I'm sure the money they make from it is way far more than what they spend on it. Many cars are taken away from people who are not allow to get a driver license. They end up donating over $1000 to US government agencies and local bussinesses ($500 for no insurance, $100 for no license, $150 for the paper work, and $900 for towing and impound). It just makes me sad knowing that most of the people affected by it are the poorest in our city, the ones that can't afford it. May God have mercy in the people who make this decisions during judgement day. "

" This is something I notice every month, if there's any out of staters. I believe there was only one in April. Most everyone else was from Napa or surrounding areas.

However, I do love the phrasing in the first line. It makes it sound like you should only steer clear of drunk driving THIS weekend...but every other time is OK??? "

" I have a couple problems with Angel's attitude about the checkpoint and the traffic laws that are enforced there. First, all those laws are in place because 40,000 people a year die on our highways. If some terrorist group killed that many year after year, we'd really be up in arms. The licensing law requires us to prove we can actually drive before we get turned loose on the public. The insurance law requires us to prove we can pay for someone's damage if we run into them. The need for a DUI law is obvious. Second, there are many restrictions placed on law enforcement concerning DUI checkpoints. Beside advertising it, they have to put it in a place where it can be seen before you get to it. If you're dumb enough to drive into one of these things unlicensed, uninsured, or drunk, you should get what you've got coming. "

" Reality,

I agree with you in every single aspect--we need those laws. However, not allowing a person the simple right to get a license and by the same token insurance, makes me very sad. The government knows that the people would be safer if they gave license because they will be able to drive with insurance, yet they have eliminated that proposal numerous times. People who drive and drink should never be allowed to drive again, but responsible people who just happened to be driving home after a hard day at work and have to go through all that, is just not morally right. How would you feel if they were to prohibit you to drive just because you were a woman, or just because you were black?

If my first comment offended you, I'm extremely sorry. From a moral point of view, I believe that GOD made us all equal, including those poor people who are already at a huge disadvantage over us--no language, far away from home and family, poor jobs, etc. I wonder what you would do and how you would feel if you were one of them.

" The reason for DUI check points is the the simple fact that people still cannot avoid driving after they had a few drinks. It's a damn shame after all they we have witnessed or read about the dangers of drunk driving that people still do not have enough sense to call a friend or cab. For the hardcore drinkers that can't control themselves, hopefully you will think of the lives you are destroying instead of the life you have wasted. "

" As for angel's comment-"I believe that GOD made us all equal, including those poor people who are already at a huge disadvantage over us--no language, far away from home and family, poor jobs, etc. I wonder what you would do and how you would feel if you were one of them." I also believe that God made us all equal. I also believe God expects us to obey the law! As to "How would I feel? "If I was breaking the law by sneaking into a country illegally, I would be afraid of being picked up by the authorities and sent to prison! I also believe that if I wanted to get a better life in another country, I would follow their immigration laws to the letter. I would learn their language, assimilate into their society, embrace its culture and not rely on its citizens to give me a handout. My family would come into the country with me LEGALLY, for I would want them to be with me in this new way of life. I would get the training to obtain a good job, pay my taxes, and contibute to society. Wow, that reminds me just exactly what my grandparents did over 100 years ago!! May "God have mercy" on the people who break the law.

" To Jeeper-well said. Amen to all of it. I don't follow Angel's logic about coming home from work. Should we let them pass because they had a hard day? "
