Apparently, one summer as head coaches for the East-West Charity All-Star Football Classic wasn’t enough for either Richard Eaton or David Fishleigh.

They enjoyed it so much that they’re ready to do it all over again.
Eaton will lead the West and Fishleigh, the coach of CIF Sac-Joaquin Section Division III champion Rodriguez-Cordelia, will direct the East in the 36th annual All-Star game, which will be played July 19 at Napa Memorial Stadium at 7:30 p.m. It features the top players from Napa, Solano and Yolo counties and benefits local charities in the area.

“I really enjoyed spending the time with the guys and the coaches,” said Eaton, a Napa resident. “I had 48 guys on the roster going into the game and everyone saw the field for a significant time and got a chance to play. We had a lot of players involved.
“I think anytime you coach an All-Star game you have to believe you’re going to have a good quality group of kids coming in.”

Graduates of Napa, Vintage, Justin-Siena, St. Helena, Calistoga, Vallejo, Bethel, Hogan, North Hills Christian, John Swett, Benicia and St. Patrick-St. Vincent are eligible to be selected to the West team, which will have practices at Bethel.
Players from Davis, Woodland, Pioneer-Woodland, Wood, Armijo, Dixon, Vacaville, Rodriguez, Winters, Fairfield, Rio Vista, Esparto and Vanden are eligible to be named to the East, which will practice at Rodriguez.

The announcement of the head coaches for the midsummer game — which is co-sponsored by the Kiwanis Club of Greater Napa and the Vallejo Police Activities League — was made by Mike Kollar of Vallejo PAL following a meeting with area coaches.

Chuck Reiland of Kiwanis serves as co-game director with Kollar.

“Both Kiwanis and PAL do a great job in getting everything put together,” said Eaton. “It’s a tradition. It’s the fabric of our community — something that happens every year. For the most part, it always takes place in Napa.

“It’s something that I think the kids look forward to, the community looks forward to. Once again, it goes to a worthwhile cause.”

Coaches from each of the schools have nominated players. Official rosters will be finalized later this spring or early in the summer. Physical exams for both teams are at 9 a.m. on June 28 at Armijo in Fairfield.

Each team is required to have three weeks of practices. Tickets for the game are $8.

“It was a great game last year and I’m excited to do it again,” said Fishleigh, whose Rodriguez team tied for the Solano County Athletic Conference title last year and then beat Bethel for the Sac-Joaquin title, 42-13. Rodriguez went 11-2 overall.

Fishleigh has been an assistant at Rodriguez, Pitman-Turlock, Merced and Golden Valley-Merced.

The West won last year’s game, 12-0, as Hogan’s Lamari Mack and Santario Carson of John Swett-Crockett scored rushing touchdowns.

Eaton left North Hills Christian-Vallejo last fall after seven years as athletic director and football coach to join Armijo as its offensive coordinator.

He’s a former Calistoga and Rincon Valley Christian-Santa Rosa head varsity coach, St. Helena JV coach, and also worked an as an assistant coach at Solano Community College-Suisun. With the Falcons, he was the assistant offensive coordinator, passing game coordinator, quarterback coach, receiver coach and assistant offensive line coach over a three-year period.

“There were a lot of budget cuts at North Hills and I just felt like it was time to make a change for myself,” he said.

Eaton will be in charge of the offense. He will be assisted by Allen Talley of John Swett-Crockett, who will handle the defense.

Eaton is looking forward to drawing on high school graduates from the Napa Valley, an area rich in football talent.

“I will tell you this — just knowing the programs that they come from, you know that they’re well coached,” said Eaton, who was 4-6 last year at North Hills, a Sacramento Metropolitan Athletic League school. “Napa, Vintage and Justin-Siena are all great programs.

“Upvalley, St. Helena also has some good athletes and then we’re going to get some kids from Calistoga. I’m looking forward to it. Just once again, they’re all quality programs and you know that when you step in, you’re really not going to do a whole lot of coaching. You put the Xs and Os together and the kids get excited about playing.”

With an enrollment of over 2400 students, Rodriguez is now one of the largest schools in the area and almost certainly will be moved into a bigger league — probably the Monticello Empire League — when realignment comes up for the Sac-Joaquin in 2010.

Rodriguez will open the 2008 nonleague schedule at home against Vacaville.

“We’ve had a great run of talent,” said Fishleigh.
