Napa Valley Girls Fastpitch Association needs concession manager
The Napa Valley Girls Fastpitch Association is seeking a concession manager for the 2008 softball season. This paid position requires approximately four to eight hours of work per week from the beginning of May through the end of July. The position includes ordering supplies, stocking supplies and preparing the snack bar for games.

The 2008 Napa Valley Soccer Club’s under-10 premier league’s soccer season starts soon. All league games are played at Redwood Middle School and the club also participates in three local jamborees.
All under-9 or under-10 Napa Youth Soccer League-registered girls or boys with birthdays before Aug. 1 can sign up for the NVSC Premier League.

Napa Youth Soccer League sign-ups start April 12
The Napa Youth Soccer League will conduct sign-ups for the fall season April 12 and 19, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m., and April 15, from 5 to 8 p.m., at Bel Aire School. Registration is also available online at nysl.org. New players need to present a copy of their birth certificate.
Fees are $70, and there are discounts for multiple children in a family.
Players must reach the age of 4 or have turned 19 by July 31 to be eligible.

Napa High spiritleader tryout clinic April 12
The 2008-09 Napa High School spiritleader tryout clinic for both the junior varsity and varsity teams will be on Saturday, April 12 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. in the NHS Dance Dept. F-1 dance studio, located in the student parking lot by the gym.
JV spiritleader candidates are current eighth- and ninth-graders.
Varsity spiritleader candidates are current 10th- and 11th-grade students.
Candidates will learn the entire tryout pom and jazz routines on Saturday and then will come on Monday through Wednesday from 3 to 5 p.m. after school for review.
Thursday, April 17 at 6 p.m. in the gym will be the tryout rehearsal. This is closed to the public. Friday, April 18 at 7 p.m. is the actual tryout and is open to the public and it will be held in the gym.
The entrance fee for spectators to the open tryouts are $10 per adult, $5 per student, with children 5 and under free.
Results will be posted on Saturday, April 19 at the front office of NHS by 10 a.m.
Fifty percent of the tryout is based on the talent portion as determined by professional judges. The remaining 50 percent is based on GPA and teacher recommendation points.
The teacher recommendation forms are mailed directly to the teachers from coach Hollie Schmidt once she receives the tryout registration forms.
The candidates do not ask their teachers to write letters of recommendation.
All candidates must have a minimum GPA of a 2.5 on their last official transcript, no exceptions.

Napa Valley Soccer Club tryouts continue April 12
Tryouts for the Napa Valley Soccer Club’s 2008-09 Division I and III teams continue in April. All tryouts will be held at Redwood Middle School.
Registration is on the east field. Players must wear soccer gear, including shin guards and cleats, and are also to bring water. All players must register to try out. Registration includes a $70 fee, and Napa Youth Soccer League registration form with parent signature. Players need to bring a passport size photo and copy of their birth certificate.

Joe DiMaggio Baseball League sign-ups April 13
Sign-ups for the 2008 Napa Valley Joe DiMaggio Youth Baseball League will be held on April 13, from 10 a.m. to noon, at the Justin-Siena High School varsity baseball field. The cost is $150 per player. Players should bring a copy of their birth certificate. Those players not being selected to a team will be given a full refund.
The Napa Valley DiMaggio League is a competitive baseball league that was founded in 1972. The league will field three teams with each team playing at least 23 games. Players can not be 20 years old before Aug. 1, 2008. Tryouts will be announced at a later date.
The league will sponsor four scholarships to graduating seniors who have played at least two years, including their senior year.
Games begin Memorial Day weekend and will culminate with the World Series in Yountville July 24-29. Games are usually played on Wednesdays, with three games on the weekends. Games will be played at the Veterans Home of California’s Cleve Borman Field in Yountville, Justin-Siena High School, Napa High School and St. Helena High School.
Once again, the league is sponsoring the Keith Connelly Fourth of July Tournament that showcases 16 teams from throughout the Bay Area and Nevada.

Napa American Legion baseball tryouts April 13
The Napa Valley Baseball Club will conduct tryouts for its 16-and-under tournament team, 17-and-under Junior American Legion team, and its 19-and-under American Legion team on April 13, from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m., at the Vintage High School varsity baseball field.
Napa’s Junior Legion and Legion teams play in District 5. The Junior Legion team plays 35 to 40 games and the Legion team plays 45 to 50 games.
Players ages 15 to 17 report at 11 a.m. for tryouts. Players ages 18 and 19 report at 12:45 p.m. for tryouts.

Napa Valley Dirt Classic bike race April 13
The 15th annual Napa Valley Dirt Classic bike race takes place in Angwin on April 13. Discounted registration is available before April 6.
This 22-mile circuit at 1,667 feet elevation began as the “Romp Stomper” and became the Dirt Classic 15 years ago, in 1994. The race is a part of the 2008 NorCal Mountain Bike State Championship Series and is open to riders of all levels. It takes place on trails on Pacific Union College property, and funds raised from the event benefit PUC recreational projects.

Adult education spring golf classes start April 15
Napa Valley Adult Education is offering three new sessions of spring golf classes starting April 15. Classes are held at the Vintners Golf Club in Yountville from 5 to 6 p.m.. and are and taught by golf professionals.

Shannon Lemieux Memorial Aquatics Day April 19
The fourth annual Shannon Lemieux Memorial Scholarship Aquatics Day is set for April 19 at the Vintage High School pool, from 11 a.m. until 3 p.m.
Justin-Siena, Napa and Vintage High School swimmers will compete in a non-scoring meet. Scheduled events also include timed masters swimming, a synchronized swimming performance, a diving exhibition, water polo match and fun team races for alumni, parents and friends. A silent auction and a concession stand for lunch will also be available. There is a $5 donation for adults and $3 for students and children.
All proceeds go to the Shannon Lemieux Memorial Scholarship Fund, which benefits all three high schools. In just three years, 31 $500 scholarships have been awarded to graduating seniors from Justin-Siena, Napa and Vintage High Schools.

Ninth annual PlumpJack/LINK Golf Classic April 21
The ninth annual PlumpJack/LINK (learning, information, networking and knowledge) Golf Classic takes place on April 21 at the Lake Merced Golf and Country Club in Daly City. The tournament was created to raise awareness and money for the Northern California Cancer Center breast cancer research and education programs. One hundred percent of the proceeds from the tournament will directly benefit the NCCC. The previous eight PlumpJack/LINK Golf Classic events have sold out and raised more than $1.3 million for the NCCC.
A dinner will follow the tournament, including hosted cocktails and a live auction hosted by Liam Mayclem from CBS-KPIX “Eye on the Bay.”
This tournament will be held in honor of Barbara Callan, a 20-year breast cancer survivor, and Tessa Thomas Newsom, who lost her battle to breast cancer in 2002.
The cost is $400 per person for the golf tournament; it’s $150 per person for the dinner program.

Optimist Youth Basketball spring tournament starts April 22
The Napa Optimist Youth Basketball program will sponsor a spring tournament beginning April 22 for boys in the 11th and 12th grades who are enrolled in any high school in Napa County. Games will be played on Tuesday and Wednesday nights with practices held on Sundays. There will be two practice games and a double-elimination tournament.
The championship game will be held on May 23. The cost is $30. Soccer referee class starts April 22
An 18-hour class for soccer referees starts this month. Referees will get registered or get a “grade 8” license. The “license” will allow you to do club, middle school and out-of-town games. The minimum age is 12 years old.
All Napa Youth Soccer League/CYA players and coaches are welcome to become referees or just to learn the rules. Classes will be held at Vintage High School in Room P12.
Class dates are April 22, 6:30 to 10 p.m.; April 24, 6:30 to 10 p.m.; April 29, 6 to 10 p.m.; May 1, 6 to 10 p.m.; and May 2, 6 to 8 p.m., or until the completion of a test.

Napa Valley Water Polo is offering a spring camp from April 29 to May 29.
Both the youth and pre-teen groups are going from 6 to 7:30 p.m. at Napa Valley College. The 9-and-under group (beginners) is going to be at Silverado Middle School and the time is 3:45 to 4:30 p.m.

Cinco de Mayo Golf Classic May 2 at Silverado Resort
The 10th annual Cinco de Mayo Golf Classic will be held May 2 at Silverado
Resort. Organized by the Napa Valley Farmworker Committee and the Cinco de
Mayo Committee, the Cinco de Mayo Golf Classic is the only fund-raising
event in Napa Valley to be exclusively dedicated to the needs of
farmworkers, with proceeds going to improve farmworker housing, healthcare
and education.
The 2008 Cinco de Mayo Golf Classic is attracting a number of underwriters,
including American Ag Credit, Diageo Estate, Garvey Family Vineyards, Miner
Family Vineyards, Margaret Duckhorn, Encanto Vineyards, Raymond Winery,
Servin-Lopez Vineyards, Silicon Valley Bank, Silverado Farming Company, Inc., Trinchero Estates and Wells Fargo Bank.
Proceeds from the Cinco de Mayo Golf Classic fund vital projects and basic needs at Napa’s Farmworker Housing Facilities that are not covered in the Farmworker Housing budget. Napa Valley Swim Team Pre-Olympic program tryouts May 3 and 10
The Napa Valley Swim Team is having tryouts for its Pre-Olympic program, which offers beginning swim instruction, on May 3 and 10, from 10:30 to 11:30 a.m. at Napa Valley College.
Youths ages 4 to 8 are eligible for the program, which teaches freestyle, breathing to the side and backstroke. There are three-week sessions offered on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday, from 4 to 4:30 p.m. The registration fee is $10. Payment is due at the registration. There are four to five swimmers per teacher with an aide.
Requirements are that you must be deep-water safe and must be able to swim 15 yards by either float with kicking on front or back, dog paddle or swimming under water.
Session dates are May 13 to May 29, June 3 to June 19, June 24 to July 10, and July 15 to July 31. The cost is $90 per session.

Napa Valley Express Softball will be holding tryouts for its 10-and-under and 12-and-under “B” teams on May 3 at the Vintage High School junior varsity softball field. Check-in for both age groups will begin at 4:30 p.m.
with evaluations to start at 5 p.m.
Make-up tryouts will be held on May 4 at the Vintage varsity softball field.
Check-in will begin at 9:30 a.m. with evaluations to start at 10 a.m.
Evaluations will last approximately two hours. Pitchers and catchers will be asked to stay after for approximately a half hour.
All players must be accompanied by a parent/guardian or they will not be allowed to try out.

Napa Golf Course offers junior practice sessions starting May 3
Napa Golf Course at Kennedy Park will be holding practice sessions for junior golfers on May 3 on the driving range. The sessions will continue on Saturdays until June 7, and then on Thursdays throughout the summer. The practice time is 2 to 3 p.m., and juniors can play nine holes of golf if they desire.
These practice sessions are for youths ages 12 to 18 and includes both boys and girls. It will be determined throughout the practice periods who will play for the Kennedy junior golf teams, which are members of the North Bay Junior League.
This year, Napa will have two teams — one boys and one girls. Seven matches are planned for the summer, either on a Monday, Tuesday or Wednesday, starting with Windsor on June 18. There is lunch at noon, followed by golf at 1 p.m. A final tournament will be held in August, where all youngster can play. It will be necessary for the youths that make the Kennedy team to arrange for their own transportation to the matches, or arrange a car pool.
The practice sessions are free of charge, with Napa Golf Course furnishing range balls and golf instruction. Those that are asked to join the teams will pay a $45 fee, which includes lunch at the matches, golf shirt and hat, six rounds of golf and six medium buckets of range balls. At the final match in August, organizers will ask each player for $10 to defray the cost of lunch and prizes.

Tryouts for the Napa Roadrunners, who are affiliated with the Napa Junior Girls Softball League, will be held in May. NHS Football’s Dinner of Champions, May 10
Napa High School’s football program is holding a Dinner of Champions on Saturday, May 10, at the Chardonnay Golf Club.
The event is looking to raise money for the Indians’ freshman, JV and varsity football teams.
The varsity gridders recently won Napa High School’s first-ever CIF Sac-Joaquin Section Division I title, with its 38-26 win over St. Mary’s-Stockton on Dec. 8. They’ve also won five Monticello Empire League Championships in the past six seasons and made it to the post season six consecutive times.
Tickets are $100 per person or $850 for a table of 10. That cost will give guests a catered dinner as well as sparkling and still wine.
The tickets are for sale at Bank of Napa on Redwood Road, in Redwood Plaza.

A girls drop-in basketball clinic for those players in the sixth through 11th grade will be held Mondays and Thursdays, March 31 through June 5, from 6:30 to 8 p.m. at the Vintage High School gym. There is no charge./Register
California Women’s State Championship July 14-16
The 13th annual California Women’s State Championship will be played at Hiddenbrooke Golf Club in Vallejo on July 14, 15 and 16. This event is open to all female amateurs who are California residents with a maximum U.S. Golf Association handicap-index of 10.4. There is no age restriction. It is sponsored by four of the California women’s golf associations: Pacific Women’s Golf Association, San Diego County Women’s Golf Association, Women’s Golf Association of Northern California and the Women’s Southern California Golf Association.
The purpose of this championship is to determine the California State Women’s Amateur Stroke Play Champion and to determine who will represent the State of California in the USGA State Team Matches, which are held every other year.
Last year’s event, won by Jenny Shin of Torrance, was held at Pala Mesa Resort in Fallbrooke.
The entry fee of $195 includes green fees, carts, range balls, a player’s reception on Monday afternoon and the awards on Wednesday afternoon. The format of the competition is 54 holes of stroke play at scratch.

NHS Football holds non-contact youth summer camp, July 28-Aug. 1
The 2007 CIF Sac-Joaquin Section Division I football champions will host a non-contact youth football camp for student-athletes from July 28-Aug. 1.
In addition to daily skill instruction in every football position, the camp will include a 7-on-7 passing tournament directed by the Indians’ football coaching staff. Any student-athlete entering fifth-eight grade may participate in this week-long, non-contact camp.
Napa head coach Troy Mott and his staff are excited to work with local athletes.
“Having played in the Napa youth football leagues myself, I am anxious to work with these kids,” Mott said. “We are going to inspire kids to play the game that has molded many of our student-athletes here at Napa High. Having grown up in our community it is important to me that we provide the best for our kids; this camp is going to educate them about conditioning, nutrition and all the values that playing football can teach.”
Napa will host the camp at its practice field, west of the weight room. The camp begins at 7:30 a.m. each morning and ends at 12:30 p.m. The cost is $195 per camper. Shannon Ridge Winery to host USA Cycling Mountain Bike National Ultra-Endurance race Oct. 18-19
Shannon Ridge Winery will host the final race of the 2008 USA Cycling Mountain Bike National Ultra-Endurance Calendar. Titled the Shannon Ridge Showdown, the event will take place in Clearlake Oaks in Lake County, Oct. 18-19.
The Shannon Ridge Showdown Ultra-Endurance race will be a 16-hour competition and the course itself is approximately 7.5 miles in length with over 1,700 feet of climbing per lap. The course route is a combination of single track, double track, fire access roads and vineyard rows. This is the first time that a USA Cycling Mountain Bike National Ultra Endurance Calendar series race course has included vineyards as part of the course route. The race and course is designed, promoted and directed by endurance racers. Ultra-Endurance racing is one the fastest growing forms of mountain bike racing.
The race will begin in front of the Shannon Ridge tasting room on Highway 20 in Clearlake Oaks at 4 p.m. on Oct. 18 and will end at 8 a.m. on Oct. 19 in the mountain vineyards directly across from the home of winery owners Clay and Margarita Shannon.

Justin-Siena needs varsity boys soccer coach
Justin-Siena High School is looking for a varsity boys soccer coach for the upcoming fall season. Candidates should be experienced and knowledgeable in the sport either as player or coach. Applicants should also bring energy, passion and enthusiasm for the sport while working well with young people.
This paid position begins in the summer and ends in mid-November. The coach will oversee both the varsity and junior varsity programs.
He will be responsible for scheduling, overseeing off-season training, and attending league and CIF meetings. The coach organizes practices and works with student-athletes on developing the proper fundamentals. The coach will work closely in coordination with the athletic director in the hiring of a coaching staff for the boys program. The varsity head coach has the opportunity to coordinate and run summer youth camps. This is currently a walk-on position with the possibility of teaching full-time, depending on the candidate’s teaching background. Napa Screamers 14-and-under softball seeking players
The Napa Screamers 14-and-under tournament softball team is looking for two utility players to complete its 2008 roster. The Screamers team will compete in six summer tournaments, with the option of continuing into the fall. In 2007, the Screamers team earned first-, second- and third-place trophies.
The 2008 tournament season will begin in May, when high school play has concluded. Eligible players must be born in 1993 or 1994.

Napa Valley MAGA accepting new golf members
The Napa Valley Mexican American Golf Association is looking for new members. Men and women age 21 and older are eligible to join MAGA, which plays a tournament schedule monthly in Napa, Solano, Santa Rosa and Contra Costa counties.
There are also openings for directors on the organization’s board. This is the 39th year of Napa Valley MAGA.

Napa Saints cheer coaches needed
The award-winning Napa Saints cheer program is now accepting applications for all coaching positions for the 2008 season. Interviews will begin in February and March. Head coaches must be 21 years of age, assistant coaches 18 years of age, and junior coaches between the ages of 14-17. Cheer and/or dance experience is desired.

Napa Golf Course spring lesson programs
Napa Golf Course at Kennedy Park will offer a spring lesson schedule designed for couples, juniors and women. The course is still offering free golf for children under 16 years of age when accompanied by a full paying adult.
• Couples golf Saturday’s is a clinic designed for players of all caliber that would like to learn the game of golf with their husband, or wife, or significant other in a casual setting. Students should have some experience but it is not required. The fee is $150 per couple. The five sessions will include fundamentals of golf and on-course instruction. All classes are one hour in duration and classes are limited to the first four couples. It runs Feb. 23 to March 22, April 5 to May 3, and May 17 to June 21. • A ladies night out clinic for those 18 and over has been the most popular clinic at Napa Golf Course. Attendees will enjoy a more relaxing atmosphere of learning. This class is for the beginner or the novice that is looking to improve their game. It runs March 3 to 31, April 14 to May 12, and May 19 to June 16. • A ladies Sunday clinic is designed to assist participants to further their knowledge and skills and concentrate on the actual playing of the game.
