Salvador and West Park elementary schools were honored Wednesday as 2008 California Distinguished Schools by State Superintendent of Public Instruction Jack O’Connell.

The prestigious award is considered the state’s highest recognition, honoring schools’ high expectations for all students, the implementation of state-adopted standards, and visionary and collaborative leadership.
Of the 839 schools eligible based on standardized test scores, 343 California public elementary schools were selected for the honor.

“These outstanding elementary schools represent many different kinds of communities, organizational structures and student populations,” said O’Connell.
All applicants underwent a rigorous selection process conducted by the California Department of Education, including submission of a detailed application and on-site review of programs by a validation team.

The Distinguished School program for Napa County is coordinated by the Napa County Office of Education.
“All faculty and staff members associated with these schools should be justifiably proud,” said Dr. Barbara Nemko, Napa County Office Of Education superintendent of schools. “Only a small percentage of schools meet the rigorous criteria needed to qualify as a distinguished school. … We are thrilled to again add Salvador and West Park to the plaque of Napa County Distinguished Schools that hangs in our lobby.”

Salvador Elementary — currently led by Principal Sarah Williams — also received the honor in 2004 under Principal Tamara Sanguinetti, and in 1995 under Principal Susan Wight. West Park Elementary — currently led by Principal Julie Herdell — received the honor in 1989 under the leadership of Principal Carol Vironda.

“We are proud of all the students, staff, and parents at West Park and Salvador Elementary Schools for all that they have accomplished and for their recognition through the California Distinguished Schools Program,” said Dr. John Glaser, Napa Valley Unified School District superintendent. “This award is the result of a rigorous process that documents and celebrates the powerful teaching and learning that is taking place at both schools.”

Representatives from the 2008 Distinguished Schools will be honored May 16 at an awards ceremony at the Disneyland Hotel in Anaheim.
