Events set for Sexual Assault Awareness month
By Register Staff
April is Sexual Assault Awareness month.
Sexual Assault Victim Services in Napa has planned several events to bring public awareness to a crime that happens to one in three females and one in six males.
On April 8 and 9, the Clothesline Project will be on display at Napa Valley College in the cafeteria. The display is a collection of T-shirts decorated by victims of sexual assault, depicting their pain, anger, strength and resilience.
Sexual Assault Awareness Day is 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the old courthouse, 825 Brown St., in downtown Napa.
The event will kick off on a humorous note with the Walk-a-Mile in Her Shoes. Men throughout the community have volunteered to stuff their feet into a pair of high-heeled shoes and walk some distance to show their support for the victims of the crime and spread awareness.
The Clothesline Project will also be on display.
Artwork by local teenagers and T-shirts designed by children will also be heading the day. Sexual Assault Victim Services is sponsoring a T-shirt decorating contest for local youngsters. The child who decorates a T-shirt best depicting this year’s theme of Decide to End Sexual Violence will be given a prize. There will be prizes for other winners as well.
There will also be plenty of food, fun and music.
