Art competition

Submit artwork to the Napa City-County Library’s annual juried competition before Monday for a chance at a one-artist show in downtown Napa. A dozen artists are selected, and the works of one artist per month are exhibited at the library over a 12-month period. Submissions accepted in photography, graphics, oil painting, acrylic painting, watercolor painting, gauche painting and mixed-media. Teacher of the Year

Nominate a teacher for the 2009 Napa County Teacher of the Year. The application of the selected teacher will be forwarded to the state for consideration as one of five California Teachers of the Year, and then considered for National Teacher of the Year. Eligible teachers are credentialed from pre-kindergarten to grade 12 in the district or county, public and/or private schools. Napa 20-30 scholarships

Napa Active 20-30 Club offers up to five scholarships of at least $1,000 each. Recipients chosen on the basis of financial need, community involvement and academic performance. High school graduates who are residents of Napa County can apply and must be enrolled in any accredited college or university within one year of graduation to redeem award. Jessamyn West writing contest

Napa Valley College is accepting entries for the 2008 Jessamyn West Creative Writing Contest in three categories: Fiction, poetry and creative non-fiction. All winners have their work published in the 2008 Jessamyn West Creative Writing Contest Anthology. A Voice Found scholarship

A Voice Found Inc. (AVF), a nonprofit career counseling and scholarship service, announces the 2008 scholarship opportunities available to local students pursuing vocational career education and training in the areas of agriculture, automotive technology, barber/beautician arts, business administration, culinary and hospitality services, early childhood education, engineering and applied technology, health sciences and technology, industrial and trade technology, nursing, and public safety. Art competition

Congressman Mike Thompson announces the annual Congressional Art Competition, inviting high school students in the First Congressional District to submit original artwork for consideration. The winner’s artwork will be displayed in the U.S. Capitol Building. The winner will also be invited to a ceremony in Washington, D.C., this June and receives three round-trip tickets to Washington from San Francisco or Oakland. The competition is open to high school students only, and each student is allowed a single entry in the competition. Categories for submission include: Painting, drawing, collage, prints, mixed-media, and computer-generated art and photography. Pieces must be no larger than 30” by 30”, including frame. Family storytime

The Calistoga Library invites children and parents to join in Family Storytime. Storytimes are Thursdays at 10:30 a.m., starting Thursday. This storytime will be a bilingual presentation, including stories, rhymes and songs in English and Spanish. This program is designed for children 2 to 5 years of age and will be 30-35 minutes long. Quilting classes

Meals-on-Wh­eels

Meals-on-Wheels seeks volunteer drivers in Napa. Meals on Wheels also provides human contact, conversations and a connection to the outside world. Drivers use their vehicles to deliver meals to homebound seniors, 10 a.m. to noon, Monday through Friday. A delivery route consists of 15-20 meals per route. Peace corps info session

The Peace Corps seeks skilled men, women and married couples from Napa County to serve as Peace Corps volunteers around the world. Peace Corps volunteers work in 74 countries, helping communities gain skills in education, business, computers, health, agriculture, the environment and more. Volunteer Center

The Senior Services Program needs volunteers to visit seniors, assist with transportation to medical appointments, and install grab bars or complete minor home repairs in the homes of frail, low-income seniors.

Sexual Assault Victims Services and Victim/Witness Services need volunteers to assist and advocate for victims of sexual assaults and other violent crimes. Bilingual volunteers especially needed. A 40-hour training program, held in the evenings and weekends, is required.

Napa Elder Abuse Project needs volunteers to answer the 24-hour hotline. Calls may be answered from home, forwarded by an answering service. A 40-hour training program is required.

Volunteers for cancer society

Volunteers are needed for American Cancer Society Discovery Shop, at 1342 Trancas St. No experience necessary. Schedules are flexible and training is provided. CASA volunteers needed

Court Appointed Special Advocate (CASA) volunteers are needed to work with children who are dependents of the court as a result of having been abused, neglected or abandoned. Volunteers undergo a thorough background and screening process and complete approximately 40 hours of initial training. Trained CASA volunteers meet and work with professionals working to help children and families reunify. People with bilingual and/or bicultural skills and experience are particularly needed. Welcome Wagon

The Welcome Wagon Club of Napa hosts “An Affair to Remember” on April 10. The gala includes a three-course luncheon. Members model Chico’s clothes. Baskets full of items are raffled.
