500 join annual Easter hunt at Kennedy Park
By KERANA TODOROV, Register Staff Writer
Seven-year-old America Garcia was standing in line behind the yellow tape Saturday, when a rush of fellow egg hunters lurched toward the first eggs.
“Go, Go, Go!,” said her dad, Jose, as America and a friend rushed toward the colorful plastic eggs.
“Go, America!”
America was among the 500-plus boys and girls who came to Kennedy Park Saturday for the annual Easter Egg Hunt, an event The Napa Active 20-30 Club organizes every year for boys and girls up to 12 years old.
The volunteers distributed about 5,000 eggs, books and toys in four different squared-off areas for four different age groups. Parents were only allowed to step inside the egg hunt area for the youngest children.
The hunt was over in a flash.
“It was like a rodeo,” said Matt Jackson of Napa after the egg hunt. “It was over in eight seconds.”
Louwella Hutnik, a new Napa resident, was at the park with two daughters, Alexis, 3 1/2, and Isabella, 5.
“It was fun,” said Hutnik. “It’s all about the kids.”
Robyn Jeffcoat of St. Helena came with her youngest son, Ethan, 5 1/2.
She, too, enjoyed the hunt.
The drive from St. Helena is worth it, said Jeffcoat, who, like others, said she particularly appreciated the fact that parents are barred from most egg hunts. That makes it more fun for the kids, she said.
The activities also featured Garfield, Snoopy and an Easter bunny, as well as face painting. Volunteers distributed books and balloons.
Jon and Kathy Nelson of Napa, who brought their two sons and two young friends Saturday, said they come every year.
“The kids have a great time,” Jon Nelson said. “It’s a fun community event.
While most families came from Napa, St. Helena and American Canyon, others said they were touring the Wine Country and came to the egg hunt after they looked up activities for their children. The egg hunt was their first stop in the Napa Valley.
Shujing Li and his wife, Sophie, came from San Francisco for the day with two children.
As he took pictures with his camera phone of 4-year-old Emma holding her pink Easter basket filled with seven plastic eggs after the hunt, Li said he’s enjoying Napa.
“Really beautiful,” Li said.
In American Canyon, about 400 kids participated in the annual egg hunt, collecting 8,000 plastic eggs at a city park near Donaldson Way. The event also featured a bonnet contest and a chalk art contest.
It’s something fun to do for Easter, said Gina Doria, as her two daughters participated in the art contest.
