Toast of the valley

Ladera Vineyards holds its second “Egg-cellent Adventure” atop Howell Mountain on March 22 from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Children are invited to search the winery grounds for candy but there's a special twist to this hunt: They may find a few treats for the adults in their lives, but these secret surprises will be revealed the day of the “Egg-cellent Adventure.”

Legislature opposes AVA changes

The California legislature has gone on record as opposing rule changes proposed by the U.S. Department of Treasury Tax and Trade Bureau that would have an effect on the pending application by Calistoga vintners to form an American Viticulture Area.

Longtime friends join in winemaking venture

From beer to grapes, from law to wine. Bernie Orsi and Lawrence Papale have come a long way in their friendship of 40 years. Today, they are producing small amounts of cabernet sauvignon, pinot noir and La Mescalanza, a blend of merlot and cabernet sauvignon grapes under their brand, not surprisingly called Orsi-Papale Estate Wines.

After 40 years in wine - here's all I know

I had my first glass of wine when I was 6. It was at my Grandfather’s Passover Seder and I fell asleep. The wine was Manischewitz, made from sweet, concord grapes, and it worked for me both as a religious experience and as a soporific.

Character study
