10:30 a.m.Four months after the sudden closure of the Lady of America gym at the River Park Shopping Center, the fitness center has reopened with a new location, different owner and new facility.

In mid-October, Lady of America members arrived at the Imola Street gym to discover its doors locked and closed signs posted.
Former franchise owner Laura Dayton had fallen behind on the rent at the River Park location and was evicted by property management company Shelter Bay Retail Group.

“We were caught unaware and very embarrassed to have Laura Dayton close under the circumstances she did,” said Gerry Weber, president and CEO of Lady of America Franchise Corporation.
Dayton is no longer a Lady of America franchise owner.

“Our priority has been to work with the members,” Weber said.
“We are mending fences with our members and spending a lot of time with people who were patient enough with us to reopen,” said Weber. About 1,100 of the 1,300 members from the River Park location remain Lady of America members, he said.

Shortly after the closure, local gym owners Matt Kathol and Kim Rassmussen bought the franchise, but later decided not to continue ownership.

Then, Meghann Pierce and Richard Von Saal then stepped forward to become the new Lady of America franchise owners.

Leasing space at 1850 Soscol, Pierce and Von Saal have remodeled and reopened the new fitness center.

Pierce, with her background in fitness, dance and massage, previously worked at other gyms in the Bay Area.

Napan Von Saal, an industrial designer, used to own Mixers restaurants in Napa and St. Helena.

“We came up with idea to design a complete wellness club for Napa,” said Von Saal, a place for women to “take care of yourself from the inside out,” he said.

Their fitness club concept goes beyond traditional aerobics classes and weight machines.

Von Saal has designed a juice bar which will serve up healthy snacks and drinks. The center will also offer esthetics, massage and salon services.

“This is very unique, new atmosphere for women in gyms,” he said.

Lady of America executives had hoped to reopen in January, but construction delays pushed that date back.

“We’re disappointed it has taken as long as it has to reopen but I think the wait was worth it,” said Weber. The new fitness center on Soscol, “puts the Imola facility to shame.”

The gym features PRECOR cardio machines, a circuit area, free weight area, dance classes such as dance fusion, zumba, belly, salsa, samba, women’s wellness retreats and monthly workshops, after hours socials, guest speakers, personal training services, and new sauna and locker rooms with showers and two spa rooms. A full service hair salon and day spa will open across the hall by April.

A large day care facility will offer with mommy-and-me dance/gymnastics classes, puppet shows, and other kid-friendly events.

“We want to create a positive environment where women feel comfortable working out, enjoy themselves and feel well within,” said Pierce.

" My life has already improved since the opening of the new LOA, mentally and physically. I like how modern it is inside and how friendly everyone is that works there, it makes you feel very welcome opposed to the old location. Keep up the great work! "

" The new gym is nice and will be wonderful when the locker rooms and showers are completed. Meghann and Rich are very nice and full of enthusiasm. I am very dissappointed that they are not honoring contracts signed with the old LOA gym. "

" The new club looks great. The service seems to be in-line with the old LOA. Broken promises, contracts not honored, and an owner who made promises verbally and breaks them verbally as she explains that she has been taken advantage of due to being naive! Sorry not my problem I just need to know who I can trust and so far it isn't the "new yet so like the old LOA" Also there sure seems to be a lot of focus on getting a food and drink bar finished, Well I for one will not patronize this place. The gym needs more equipment and that would be an ideal place to put. Sorry I am interested in burning calories at the gym not drinking them. Say what meen and meen what you say! "

" the new space is not big enough, the contracts with the old LOA are NOT being honored and the front desk staff knows nothing about the health industry......... Wonder how long this one will last....... "

" Not sure if they are honoring old memberships, but they don't have a problem charging my card for an account that was cancelled over 1 1/2 years ago "

" i realize this is a franchise and the new owners did not default on rent, etc. However, LOA as a company should have refunded charges to cards during the period of closure as well as credited sign up fees (especially for those who just signed up!). also, if they are so concerned with bridging a gap between the old owners and the new owners, they should be honoring old accounts or offer some sort of credit. if not - there is always the wonderful gym at queen of the valley! " LOA is not the only gym in town. Exertec has tons of classes that LOA is offering. Zumba alone runs every day, Body Pump is awesome and better than most strength training machines. They also have child care and private swim lessons. They are also providing food (at a cost of course) so that you can bring home dinner instead of making it. I don't know why people think that having a juice bar is so important. The drinks are so full of sugar and calories, that 1 small one is the equilavent of a normal dinner. And you want that in your gym? Oh of course, so that members have to come back to work it all off. "

" I am a member of LOA and i am defently unhappy with the new gym. I agree with lsw1969 the gym needs more equipment we do not need a juice bar and a beauty solon. I hope the new owners read the comments so they can realize that their customers are NOT HAPPY. "

" I think that Meaghann and Richard are doing their best to please the members. They are very open to all suggestions and want to be successful. They are making progress and getting in new equipment - at least that is what we've been told. We need more heavy duty weight machines and I hope they'll be coming. Most members, including myself, are not interested in a juice bar or beauty salon but in a full service gym. I wish them success. The staff is very friendly, courteous and helpful. "

" The club FINALLY opened! From my experience with owning a small business, the owners are subject to the delays and priorities of all their suppliers. I think they have done pretty good. Concerning contracts, many of those previous contracts were last minute money makers for the old franchise owner. If people want a nice club that will stay open and be receptive to their clients, then they need to be prepared to support the business. If the place were filled up with $15 a month clients, of course it would fail. It costs quite a bit of money to run a business nowadays. As far as the complaints go, most of us realize that it takes time and cash to respond to requested change. And I am sure that there was a time when the owners of the other gyms were just learning too. I say BRAVO to the dynamic duo for their courage to start this business and their responsiveness by being there to listen to all of the left over complaints from the old business. "

" I just want to put in my two cents by letting all the UNHAPPY members know that LOA is not the only gym in Napa!! If you are so unhappy at the new location, then get out of your membership and go somewhere else! This new gym is all about NEW things! NEW and POSITIVE ENERGY, a NEW and much NICER Facility with 2 completely NEW and awesome owners!! I am sure the only thing holding you back from leaving is the GREAT rates although you hate to admit that Lady of America still has the best rates in town!! Go ahead and go pay 60-80 dollars a month somewhere else if you're not happy! You people need to understand that you are paying the bills at this new loaction and if you want more equipment, nice shampoo in the showers and nice TVs you are going to have to pay more than 15.00 month! Which is why Laura Dayton closed her doors!! She couldn't pay her bills because she wasn't charging enough! Also, you people need to understand that charges made in October/November was still under National Fitness not ABC...ABC is just as NEW to LOA as the owners who only bought out from the franchise in November! IF you want your 15.00-30.00 back from those months, get Laura Dayton's Banruptcy Information and send her a bill for whats he owes you! I am very HAPPY at the New location, it's a lot nicer, they have brand NEW machines, and the STAFF is very nice and welcoming! "

" I am a fitness instuctor at LOA (and other facilities in Napa). I applaud Meghann and Richard for having the vision and courage to re-open a business that so publicly colapsed. Clearly they are not responsible for the demise of the previous business, and from what I have seen they are working very hard to pacify unresolved situations.

I challenge the members of LOA to be patient with the growth of this new facility. The staff is nothing short of exceptional and the owners are working very hard to make members happy. My hope is that the non-constructive complaining will stop at the door. This will allow for positive growth of this new establishment and a healthier environment for women to exercise.

" Different fitness environments work for different people. If this environment is not for you, than move on, but being negative about an environment that may be successful for someone else is not productive. I have found the environment at the new LOA to be supportive, creative and refreshing. They are still in transition, I believe that over time the completion of their hard work will be even more positive. I enjoy working out with other women that are fit, well rounded and have an overall goal for wellness in their lives. I hope that those types of members stay and people that are looking for something else find what they are looking for and are happy with the outcome. If you are not currently a member, I recommend that you look into LOA as a positive, supportive Fitness Facility that is available to you. "

" Of course we're upset when someone steals from us but I blame Corporate LOA, not the franchise. If Corporate were really interested in supporting the new owners/location and existing pre-existing members, they would subsidize the difference between the old and current pricing. Corporate takes a percentage of the membership fees which leaves the franchise with even less. I don't expect the new owners to ratify practices that put the old owner out of business - that would be insanity!
I love the new location. It is like no other facility in Napa that I'm aware of. Smaller, but with some careful time management, I find it workable? Machines are fewer, but far superior; less negative impact on the joints which is a plus for those of us over 40. The new pricing is a financial hardship for some of us but I always felt that the old deal was too good to be true. I've always heard, if it seems too good to be true, it probably is - now I know. Maybe if enough people petitioned Corporate, they might step up to the plate.

" OK. I understand the new owners are trying hard to make this a great place to work out, but I have a couple questions. When I signed up at the original LOA, I signed up with a large group under my employer and was given a $20.00 a month rate. The group looked at a few facilities and all were happy to give a large group discount. The group decided to go with LOA. Now our old contract is not good anymore according to the person at the new LOA that I spoke with. What happens with our old contract? Can the new LOA make us sign up again with a higher rate if we already have a contract? My understanding was this was a reopen of a business that was already here but with a new owner and new facility and the current contracts would be valid if they are in good standing. Am I wrong? The new LOA is now charging my account monthly for the $20.00 but said I have to sign a new contract in order to use the facility. Is that correct? I understand the old LOA may have had money trouble in part to the low rates but the new LOA new that coming in here. I think the new LOA should honor the old contracts but charge new customers a higher rate because they are not in a current contract. Any thoughts would be great. "

" I don't know if some of these members know what it takes to keep a gym up and running. LOA cannot possibly provide for it's members if they are paying $10 to $15 per month. This has been made clear by the actions of Laura Dayton. I am happy to pay $50 per month to work out in a clean, friendly and beautifully designed facility. I think that Richard and Meghann are doing their best to work with the unhappy members Laura so rudely left behind. I am excited about the addition of the juice bar and salon. I remember going to Richards previous venture (MIXERS) and having a wonderful selection of healthy and energizing concoctions to choose from . This is much more than just a gym. This is a center of wellness for both inside and out. I applaud Richard and Meghann for bringing something to Napa that is so deperately needed. "

" I joined LOA back in early '05. Last September I sent in a notice of Cancellation. They soon after closed down and when they reopened they began charging me again. I went into the new facility to cancel and they told me I had to meet with the owner to cancel and they are only available between the most inconvienent times during the day. So I made an appointment and took time off work to cancel and the owner ended up not even being there. She finally called me later that night and cancelled over the phone and refunded my money. I don't know why they couldn't have done that to begin with rather than waste my time. "
