Drag ’Net: Napa sheriff goes interactive

Residents will soon have a new way to reach members of the Napa County Sheriff’s Department, thanks to a major upgrade to the agency’s Web site.
The department has recently updated its Web site to be more interactive and informative, according to sheriff’s Capt. John Robertson.
“It is much more community oriented. Our old Web page was about seven years old and was not interactive at all. It was a historical look at the sheriff’s office and its current bureaus,” Robertson said. “The updated Web site is interactive, informative and can be accessed to find links that will direct you to other law enforcement-based Web sites.”
The site is www.co.napa.ca.us/sheriff.
Once the home page pops up, the public will be able to see Napa’s Sheriff’s Most Wanted list. The link is updated weekly and includes photographs and arrest information of Napa County’s most wanted suspects who are at large.
The Napa Valley Register Web site, napavalleyregister.com, has published the list for several months, and as a result many of those on the list have been found or have turned themselves in.
Other features of the sheriff’s site include a page on Megan’s Law, containing information about registered sex offenders in California.
Amber Alerts, issue when children are believed to be missing or abducted, are also on the Web site.
Robertson said the biggest feature about the upgraded Web page is the comments or questions link.
“This gives us the ability to answer questions and receive information from the public 24 hours a day, seven days a week,” he said. “We will not be taking crime reports over the Internet. A deputy will respond to the residence or business of the person who is reporting the crime to take a report.”
Robertson said the department is looking into the possibility of providing a free subscription-based blog where people will be updated electronically on important crime information in Napa County. They will need to provide their e-mail address.
The goal of the story comments section at NapaValleyRegister.com is to have an open, thought-provoking, civil community forum for all issues.
