A 17-year-old hit-and-run victim was still listed in critical condition Sunday evening at Santa Rosa Memorial Hospital.

The teen sustained serious head injuries Saturday morning after being struck by a 2000 Nissan truck while riding his bike westbound across Jefferson Street at Pueblo Avenue.
The driver of the truck, 44-year-old St. Helena resident Armando Hurtado, is being held at Napa County jail, where he faces charges stemming from two felony hit and runs Saturday morning. Police said as Hurtado raced from the scene of hitting the teen bicyclist, he headed northbound into the southbound lanes of Jefferson Street, crashing into an unidentified motorist who suffered moderate injuries.

Hurtado drove away from that scene as well, only to have his truck disabled a short time later by a flat tire. He fled on foot to a nearby Verizon Wireless store off Jefferson Street, but was kept from going further by passersby until authorities arrived and took him into custody.
On Sunday, Police said a search of Hurtado’s truck did not reveal any illegal drugs. On Saturday, police said it did not appear as if Hurtado was intoxicated at the time of the incidents, but it could take up to six weeks to get the results of a formal toxicology report.

" I was there when this happened & I'm so glad to hear the boy is still laive & that the man was caught. It was the most awful thing I've ever seen in my life & I pray that no one ever has to go through it! Kudos to the other bystanders there taking care of the boy until the paramedics arrived! Everyone please pray for this boy to fight through to get better! "

" The concerned students of the SWAS program at NHS wish to express their deepest sympathies for the injured young man.

We hope the driver is punished to the fullest extent of the law. We also hope the driver realizes the error of his actions, and asks the family for forgiveness.

Our prayers go out to the victims family and we hope they can overcome this tragedy.

" i know that the driver shouldn't have fleed the accident and there for he seems guilty but have any of u guys ever think that the teen was also responsible for not wearing a helmet when he should have by law! "

" ali23, are you serious ? I have a feeling that the helmet wouldn't have protected him from that kind of impact. It's not the bikers fault . I cannot even consider blaming the biker. shame "

" why do the victims always get blamed for breaking the law? what part of victim dont you understand? "

" I'm not going to blame the victim for the accident, he had the right away in the crosswalk and the driver ran the red light. Now the victim could have done things to help advert this accident, you should always look both ways when using a crosswalk, don't assume everyone is stopping, I usually like to wait a 5 to 10 seconds before going into the crosswalk, also a helmet mght have helped seeing how the victim suffered major head trauma, but it also might have had little or no effect considering how hard he was hit. My heart really goes out for the victim and his family, but to everyone else remember to look both ways before crossing a street, this i the second time in a week a young Napan was hit crossing a busy street. Theres a lot of bad drivers out there and as pedestrians you must be looking out for them cause there driving the 2000 pound cars "

" ali23, you should be ashamed of yourself. There is nothing about the criminals actions that can be considered anything less than GROSSLY NEGLAGENT. As mentioned before, even if he had a helmet, that impact would have killed most people.

You need to look at the bigger picture. Is Hurtado any different than the man who walks out of a Wendys bathroom and just opens fire on the customers? Are you gonna plan the VICTIMS in that case for thier poor diatary choice?

"

" I cannot believe that someone would blame the child for not wearing a helmet. He was in a crosswalk with the right of way. I was at the scene and I am sure it would not have mattered. The drive was going extremely fast.

" On Saturday morning my daughter in law saw this as it happened and after calling 911, called me hardly able to speak she was so upset certain that she had just witnessed a killing. What she saw was a white truck hit this boy, hurling him through the air above the roof of the building she was in. He summersaulted through the air while his clothes were flying off his back till he finally landed half a block away. What this person was thinking by leaving the scene of this horror is beyond a normal persons comprehension. He was obviously more concerned about the consequences to himself for his "situation" and what he had done than he was for the boys that he'd injured. There is no disputing the level of bodily harm done to the older of the boys and no one in their right mind could possibly think that this boy would be able to walk away from it. I find it curious that no one (friend or family) has entered to defend his character or ability to contribute anything of value to humanity as so often happens in a situation where someone has done harm to another and people take sides as they will. I can only think that he is sick sick sick. This boy and his family need all the prayers this community can offer. He has been seriously seriously injured, I only hope that he is able to recover. Pray also for his young brother who while injured as well, also witnessed what had happened to his brother. He was absolutely panic stricken with worry. GOD BLESS the good citizens of NAPA that stood up to help him. You're all hero's, every one of you. Thankyou!! "

" Bike helmets are not designed to take the impact of a bike versus car impact. They barely work for the intended purpose of falling off of the bike at 20 mph or less. Read the disclosures that come with any bike helmet. "

" ali23 - This is the second negative comment you have written condeming the boy. What is wrong with you or are you defending Hurtado because you know or are related to him? jennygirl267, I too was there and I still can't get that image out of my head. The boy and his family are in my prayers. I am particularly bothered that the brother had to witness this. I also ask that everyone pray for this boy to get better! "

" Ali23, please take your flawed logic elsewhere. The biker is my cousin. He's in bad shape; a helmet would have done nothing. "
