Justin-Siena High School is looking for an assistant baseball coach. Candidates should be experienced and knowledgeable in the sport either as player or coach. This paid position begins immediately, ends in late May and could be at the varsity, junior varsity or freshman level depending on the candidate’s experience.
The coach will help organize practices and work with student-athletes on developing the proper fundamentals. They also will work closely in coordination with the varsity program and head coach Scott Wright. This is currently a walk-on position with the possibility of teaching full-time in the future depending on the candidate’s teaching background.

Optimist vs. High School boys basketball spring tournament proposed

Optimist Youth Basketball coordinators are considering having a spring tournament that would be open to Optimist 11th- and 12th-Grade Boys Division players and varsity boys players from any high school in the Napa Valley.

It would be held weeknights and consist of three games followed by a double-elimination tournament. The cost would be $30.

Napa Valley MAGA accepting new golf members

The Napa Valley Mexican American Golf Association is looking for new members. Men and women age 21 and older are eligible to join MAGA, which plays a tournament schedule monthly in Napa, Solano, Santa Rosa and Contra Costa counties.

There are also openings for directors on the organization’s board. This is the 39th year of Napa Valley MAGA.

The next tournament is Feb. 24 at Rio Vista at 8 a.m. The cost is $65.

Napa High Athletic Hall of Fame accepting nominations

Nominations for the Napa High School Athletic Hall of Fame — which celebrated its 11th year in 2007 — are open until March 15.

Former Napa High athletes who graduated in 1993 or before are eligible for consideration this year. The Hall of Fame is made up of athletes, coaches and special category inductees.

Nomination forms, detailed instructions and information about the nomination and selection procedures are available by calling the NHS Athletic Hall of Fame Foundation office at 226-5818.

The purpose of the NHS Athletic HOF Foundation is to honor the school and its athletics department by recognizing the achievements of former athletes, coaches and others who have made significant contributions to the school’s athletic programs.

Completed nomination forms should be mailed to the Foundation office at 575 Lincoln Ave., Room 300 B, Napa, CA 94558 with a postmark no later than March 15. There is a $20 fee for each nomination. Napa Saints cheer coaches needed

The award-winning Napa Saints cheer program is now accepting applications for all coaching positions for the 2008 season. Interviews will begin in February and March. Head coaches must be 21 years of age, assistant coaches 18 years of age, and junior coaches between the ages of 14-17. Cheer and/or dance experience is desired.

Sonoma County Alliance to form SCA North Teams

Sonoma County Alliance and Windsor Youth Soccer League announced their official cooperation in the formation of Division 1 teams in Windsor for the 2008 youth soccer season under SCA leadership. This program, set to begin immediately, will feature teams playing under the coaching staff and club vision of SCA. The teams — which will be referred to as SCA North — will train in the city of Windsor.

The initial season for SCA North will feature tryouts for boys and girls teams in under-9, under-10 and under-11 age groups. SCA will only form teams up to age under-14 under the SCA North umbrella. Players wishing to continue on under SCA guidance at the under-15 and older level will then be involved at the home club in Petaluma.

If there is significant interest in the U12-U14 age levels this upcoming year, SCA will also consider forming SCA North teams in those age levels this spring.

North Bay Umpires Association needs baseball, softball umpires

The North Bay Umpires Association needs high school baseball and softball umpires for the upcoming season. Napa Golf Course lesson programs offered in the spring

Napa Golf Course at Kennedy Park will offer a spring lesson schedule designed for couples, juniors and women. The course is still offering free golf for children under 16 years of age when accompanied by a full paying adult.

• Couples golf Saturday’s is a clinic designed for players of all caliber that would like to learn the game of golf with their husband, or wife, or significant other in a casual setting. Students should have some experience but it is not required. The fee is $150 per couple. The five sessions will include fundamentals of golf and on-course instruction. All classes are one hour in duration and classes are limited to the first four couples. It runs Feb. 23 to March 22, April 5 to May 3, and May 17 to June 21. • A junior “rookies” spring break camp offers classes for juniors from the ages of 6 to 11 that have no or a limited knowledge of the game of golf. The focus is to make the game fun, while giving students the basic fundamentals of the modern golf swing. It is recommended that students bring their own clubs, but a limited amount of clubs will be available for use. The cost is $99. It runs from March 24 to 28. • A juniors “next level” after-school clinic will be targeting the intermediate junior, ages 14 to 17, that would like to improve to a more competitive level. Course management and strategy, advanced instruction, and on course training on etiquette will be emphasized while building on a strong fundamental base. Students will have the opportunity to play golf on the course depending on their grasp of the game. It began Feb. 7 and runs until March 6, and the cost is $110. • A ladies night out clinic for those 18 and over has been the most popular clinic at Napa Golf Course. Attendees will enjoy a more relaxing atmosphere of learning. This class is for the beginner or the novice that is looking to improve their game. It runs March 3 to 31, April 14 to May 12, and May 19 to June 16. • A ladies Sunday clinic is designed to assist participants to further their knowledge and skills and concentrate on the actual playing of the game. Participants must have completed a “Ladies Night Out” clinic or have a knowledge of the game that is above the beginner level and own a set of golf clubs. City of Napa’s mini-soccer indoor youth program deadline Feb. 21

The city of Napa’s Community Resources Department is offering a mini indoor youth soccer program for youths ages 3 to 6. The four-week season begins on Feb. 23, with games scheduled at 9, 10 and 11 a.m. and noon, at the Las Flores Community Center Gym. The registration deadline is Feb. 21. All registered players should show up on the first day of class. Parents are asked to have their child report 15 minutes early the first day to allow for time to check-in and get their team shirt.

The mini-soccer program is built on the same foundation of fun and instruction that has led to the success of other youth leagues. Each team will spend the first 25 minutes learning new skills and the next 25 minutes playing games. All players will be assigned to a team on the first day at the gym. The fee is $40 and includes a team T-shirt.

Napa High crab and pasta feed Feb. 23

Napa High will hold its annual Sports Booster Club crab and pasta feed on Saturday, Feb. 23 from 6 p.m. until midnight at Chardonnay Hall at the Napa Expo Fairgrounds. Proceeds benefit all Indians athletic programs. The crab is supplied from northern California and Oregon.

Must be 21 or older to attend. Doors open at 5 p.m. with dinner served at 6 p.m. There will be dancing from 9 p.m. until midnight. The no-host bar will be open until 11 p.m.

Cost is $50 per person for open seating or $100 per person for VIP reserved. Open seating includes all-you-can-eat crab, pasta, salad, French bread and dessert while reserved seating includes that as well as a champagne reception, complimentary wine, gift bag and raffle tickets.

A’s plan to celebrate 40th anniversary season in Oakland

OAKLAND — The Oakland Athletics will celebrate their 40th anniversary season in the East Bay with a season-long promotional campaign highlighting the championship tradition, the players and memorable moments that have contributed to the glorious and colorful past of one of baseball’s most successful franchises over the last 40 years.

The first of a series of promotional events will launch on the A’s official website —oaklandathletics.com/40 — on March 1, when on-line voting commences to determine the 40 Greatest Moments in Oakland A’s History, along with the selection of the A’s 40th Anniversary team. The countdown of the Top 10 moments in Oakland A’s history will begin in-stadium on Diamond Vision beginning on Sept. 11, with the top moment in Oakland history unveiled on Sept. 21. The A’s 40th Anniversary team will be introduced during a pre-game ceremony on Sept. 20.

Former A’s players will join in the various festivities throughout the year.

U.S. Youth Volleyball League in American Canyon deadline March 1

The United States Youth Volleyball League starts this spring in American Canyon. The program will be running at Kimberly Park at the beginning of April. The registration deadline is March 1.

The USYVL is an instructional volleyball league for boys and girls ages 7 to 14. Teams are coed and no previous volleyball experience is necessary. There are three age divisions: 7-9, 10-11 and 12-14.

The organization’s mission is to provide every child with a chance to learn and play volleyball in a fun, safe, supervised, low-pressure environment. Every child plays and learns the game, with emphasis on sportsmanship, cooperation and teamwork.

Napa Valley Baseball Club has tryouts for 14-and-under team March 2

The Napa Valley Baseball Club will be having tryouts for its 14-and-under team for all Napa Valley players. This is open for players ages 13 to 14 who are interested in a higher caliber level of playing. Try-outs will be at the Vintage High School varsity baseball field on March 2, from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Prospective players are asked to bring baseball equipment with them to tryouts. City of Napa girls volleyball league has March 6 deadline

The Napa Community Resources Department is offering a girls volleyball league for those ages 10 to 14. The season will begin with one-hour practices on Monday and Wednesday evening at 5, 6, 7 or 8 p.n., starting March 17 at the Las Flores Community Center. Games will begin on March 26 and will be played on Wednesdays at 5, 6, 7 or 8 p.m. “Skills and drills” sessions will continue on Mondays once games have started and will be scheduled at the same time every week.

Teams are formed randomly by age. The goal is to provide players with a safe, fun environment to learn, compete, socialize and recreate. All players will be contacted by an instructor prior to the start of the league with their first practice time. The early registration deadline is March 6. The Napa Saints will conduct sign-ups for the 2008 football and cheer season. They will be held March 11 at PB&Js, 849 Jackson St., Suite 4A from 6 to 7:30 p.m., and at the Chefs Market, May 30, June 13 and June 20, from 5 to 8 p.m.

There is a cheer clinic March 1, from 12:30 to 2:30 p.m., at the Harvest Middle School gymnasium.

City of Napa spring youth basketball league for boys and girls has March 13 deadline

The Napa Community Resources Department is offering a youth basketball program for boys and girls, ages 7 to 12. Each team consists of up to 12 players of the same age group to ensure equal playing time for everyone. Each team practices for one hour per week, between Monday and Friday at a school to be announced. Practices will begin the week of March 31 and each team will play one game per week beginning the week of April 7. All games and practices will take place Monday through Friday.

This program has been designed to provide the opportunity for a positive learning experience in a fun environment for boys and girls of all skill levels. Coaches will contact all players regarding practice day and time as well as the game schedule after March 20.

The early registration deadline is March 13 and the fee is $70 per player. Late registration will be accepted if space is available and the fee is $80 per player.

Napa Saints fundraiser at SaberCats game March 15

The Arena Football League’s San Jose SaberCats will donate to the Napa Saints youth football program one-half of sales of tickets bought by those who say they are supporting the Napa Saints at their 7:30 p.m. game on March 15 against the Arizona Rattlers at San Jose’s HP Pavilion.

The event is part of the Cats in the Community Fundraiser Program and is designed to benefit Little League or Pop Warner teams, high school athletic booster clubs, and any other non-profit or charitable organizations. In addition to donating more from tickets sales this year, the SaberCats have also expanded the number of seating options available at the Arena — excluding Sideline Club seats.

City of Napa adult slow pitch softball has April 3, 10 deadlines

The Napa Community Resources Department is offering an adult fall slow pitch softball program.The 12-game season will be played Sunday through Friday nights. All teams must be prepared to play on the night they are assigned, regardless of the night they requested. Completed team rosters must accompany registration. The registration fee is $575 per team by April 3, or $590 per team by April 10. The season runs April 20 through August 1. Junior golf sessions at Vintner’s Golf Club on Saturdays

The Vintner’s Golf Club in Yountville is offering junior golf sessions every Saturday. Sessions, open to all ages and all skill levels, run from 12:30 to 2:30 p.m. and 3 to 5 p.m.

The cost is $25 per player per session.

Sessions will cover golf instruction for all skill levels, golf etiquette, general golf rules, daily contests and skills challenges.

Advance reservations are required, and players need to check in 10 minutes prior to a lesson at the driving range.
