From the heart
I’m always so happy to see Valentine’s Day arrive. Not because I love the day — I don’t. I’m no fan of Hallmark holidays in general, and this one is particularly commercial. But I welcome it for what it represents.
The rill deal
Every now and then readers bust me for making a mistake in this column or elsewhere in the paper, but they don’t usually back up their facts with a thick packet of documentation.
A heads-up about tree failures
As I’ve done each year since 1998, I recently attended the California Tree Failure Report Program. This year, again, it was held at Filoli, the fabulous estate in Woodside.
No wonder Microsoft wants Yahoo
The word earlier this week that Yahoo is rejecting Microsoft’s buyout offer as being too low — too low at $44 billion —gives us a look at two elements of today’s information age: One, valuations are as completely out of control as in the old dot-com days and, two, Microsoft is willing to give in to such valuations because Web 2.0 or Web 3.0 or whatever the kids are calling it these days really, really scares Microsoft.
Looking good
Having survived Super Sunday and Super Tuesday, it may be Super Thursday that has the greatest long-term impact on Napa homeowners.
Can you feel the love?
Since opening the doors 17 years ago, Alexis Baking Company has made every Valentine’s Day special.
Cork conundrums
Time was, the ritual of the cork was one of the hallowed traditions of restaurant wine service. The waiter arrived with the bottle, removed the foil capsule, worked the worm of the corkscrew into the cork, and slowly withdrew the cork, producing that satisfying “thwock.”
Salk
The other day at the Napa City-County Library, I was doing some research work on a microfilm machine, and I’d zeroed in on the Summer of 1950.
Spice up your Valentine’s Day
In the space of a few weeks, food shopping options in Napa have exploded with possibilities and one of the most exciting of these is a tiny shop at the new Oxbow Public Market where Shuli and Ronit Madmone are selling spices — more than 300 kinds at last count, all gloriously fresh (they grind them at their warehouse in Petaluma). The array is visually dazzling — vivid green dill, bright Hungarian paprika, pale pink Himalayan salt, lavender powder — and in addition to spices both familiar and not, the Madmones create distinctive blends for curries, tagines and other exotic creations. And they know their products. Shuli’s family in Israel has been in the spice business for many years, and he brought that expertise with him when he moved to the U.S. Ronit, also a native of Israel, who met and married Shuli in Marin County, said she’s been “doing a lot of reading” in the library to build up her own spice knowledge.
My first love: Fishing!
The Napa Valley is getting a nice preview of springtime this week.
51 percent of wineries to change hands
A big shakeup in ownership of wineries in the west is coming, according to a report issued by Silicon Valley Bank and Scion Advisors, a Napa-based wine advisory group.
Valentine’s Day Long Ago
While shopping in one of our large stores recently, I was taken aback by the amount of Valentine’s Day paraphernalia on the shelves.
Wafting odor
I live in Napa and work in American Canyon. I have noticed a curious odor in the air near the airport. I am sure that many visitors notice this as they come to taste wine, since I presume they have a good sense of smell.
Mouth wide open
As the minister launched into his sermon, my mind must have detached a bit. I don’t know where it went. Probably not far. Perhaps just around the block.
Fruit trees
Time is running out. If you haven’t given your backyard fruit trees their annual dormant pruning, you should get to it as soon as possible. Deciduous trees, including apples, pears, plums, peaches, figs, apricots and cherries, are awakening from their winter’s sleep. Sharpen your pruning shears and get the pruning done.
Fear and loathing in the south county
While examining the contentious northern RUL proposed for American Canyon by the County’s draft general plan, the planning commissions of both entities held a joint session last summer. During the session the commissioners, staff and members of the public present began to have the somewhat predictable epiphany that we weren’t far apart on the issues.
Friend may need a special needs trust
Dear Len & Rosie, I am the representative payee for a neighbor. He is disabled and receives Social Security and Supplemental Security Income Benefits plus Medicare. Recently his father died and he is a beneficiary to the will.
Health care and a new president
This is one of the most exciting Presidential campaigns ever, largely because so many new voters are getting involved and getting energized about the issues, something that has been sorely needed for a long time.
Napa City Update: Development and water
Recent letters to the Register have raised questions about potential development and future water supply for the city of Napa.
Courthouse Corner: Helping people help themselves
Editor’s note: Courthouse Corner appears in the Register for the first time today, providing information to help the general public deal with the civil and criminal courts. Information in the column is provided by Napa County Superior Court. The column will appear the second Tuesday of each month.
Donna Scala to take over Pilar's space
Donna Scala of Bistro Don Giovanni has bought the building now occupied by Pilar Restaurant on Main Street in downtown Napa.
Dealing with change
Awhile back, I participated in a workshop where the moderator had the participants complete an interesting exercise. He asked us to pair up, face one another, and without speaking observe each others’ appearance for one minute. He then asked us to turn our backs to each other and change ten things about our appearance. After a few minutes we again faced each other and tried to pick out the changes.
