Winemaker Oscar Renteria pulled out five bottles of his finest vintages for a special guest Wednesday.

Renteria was among a handful of Latino winemakers and vineyard owners who got the rare opportunity to meet Felipe Calderon, president of Mexico, during Calderon’s tour of California.

The Sonoma County encounter with the president was both comical and charming, Renteria said.

“He took a sip of our Stag’s Leap Cabernet ... and it got on his shirt,” Renteria said.

Within minutes Calderon had slipped in and out of the bathroom, fresh shirt on his back, to continue talking with Renteria and the others, Renteria said.

“He is very mild mannered, he dressed very casually (and) he was very approachable,” Renteria said. “Actually, he knows my dad. So we talked about the families. They all spoke about how proud they are of people who are here.”

Calderon’s visit to the valley was a show of support to those who are living and working here, making wine and giving back to their countrymen in Napa and Mexico, Renteria said.

“We are at a critical juncture between Mexico and the U.S. with immigration,” Renteria said. “(He said) we need to do everything we can to support and unite people who are here.”

Calderon also told the group that he would do everything he could to provide economic aid to Mexicans living in California.

Vintners hoped the president could make it less expensive to export their wines to Mexico, Renteria said.

Before coming to Robledo Family Winery in Sonoma for the gathering, Calderon spent some time in Sacramento, where he met with Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger and made a speech that touched on the interdependency between Mexico and California.

Wednesday’s visit at Robledo Winery had heavy security and protesters as well as wine. Sonoma County Sheriff’s Department deputies and

the California Highway Patrol joined forces with the president’s security detail and stationed themselves around the winery grounds.

Guests were required to arrive early to be searched by members of security, dogs were brought in to smell the wine and sharpshooters with high-powered rifles watched over the president. A contingent of demonstrators set up shop in front of the winery to protest Calderon’s visit and his views on immigration, while inside Calderon mingled with prominent Latinos.

Calderon left Sonoma around 5 p.m., and headed to Los Angeles where he was scheduled to meet with Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa.

For winemakers such as Renteria, the president’s visit to the valley meant that his term is likely to be friendly to Mexicans living in California.

“You could see his biggest smile came when he was around the simple guys,” Renteria said, referring to five of Robledo Winery’s farm

Workers who were invited to the event. “He was very proud to talk to them and very proud of Robledo and the different heads of the families. He sent a very clear message. ... he made all of us feel really good.”

"Illegal immigrants" from those countries are routinely frisked, robbed, incarcerated and worse, by Mexican Police with the encouragement of the Government. Perhaps to get a better lay out of the land that he is overtly and covertly encouraging his fellow Mexicans to overtake. Why is it that everyone 'latino,' or 'mexican' must group identify? Though I'm not a huge fan of his, one rarely reads or hears Mondavi constantly refer to being Italian, of Italian heritage and adhering to Italian culture more closely than American heritage. Same with others of many and varied ethnic, national backgrounds. But, the southern denizens cannot seem to think of themselves as anything but American *(if citizens).

Group identity is the worse and most prevelant form of racism as it automatically excludes all other races and nationalities.

Go home, Calderone and take some of yours with you. "

I enjoy & appreciate diversity, and Latin America is perhaps my favorite region to visit on the planet. But there is a difference between that and accepting every low-skilled illiterate that is driven to the US border by the Mexican government. It doesn't take an economic genius to see that illegal immigration depresses wages, lowering the standard of living, and creates divisions in our society (through lack of assimilation) when we should be coming together and looking past differences. I don't have a solution for dealing with the 11 million illegal immigrants that are here right now, but I do know that we need to start severely punishing those here who hire illegal immigrants and begin heavily taxing remittances to overseas locales so we can force the Mexican government's hand in actually working with us for a solution, rather than leaving them to exacerbate the problem. Calderon's government is as hypocritical as they come; treat Guatemalans and El Salvadorans (who are desperately poor even by Mexican standards) like subhuman garbage, but complain about the treatment their own undesireables receive here. Choke off one of Mexico's primary income streams and force their hand to cooperate for a real border solution. "

I'll never understand apo.ogists for invaders who insist that citizens are unwilling to work. Until the illegal, underpaid invaders came, citizens worked all positions, all careers, all types of skills, all bank teller jobs, etc. Then, those willing to accept less pay in exchange for anonymity, drove out the labor force of America, just as is happening with GM now. Attempting to remove the current workforce in favor of lower cost labor...guess from where!! Grow up! Amnesty supporters~!! "

" I know of a 23 yr old male, my son's friend, who was looking for a job, any job, in Sacramento. He was told over and over again by employers that they couldn't hire him because he didn't speak Spanish. He's caught between a rock and a hard place because he's not skilled enough for jobs that do not require Spanish language skills, yet he's willing to work entry level jobs but cannot get hired. I really see a very serious trend of young, unskilled males unable to get entry level jobs because they are filled up with foreigners who can speak the native language of their country. Our schools are suffering because of the language problem. We have a whole new generation of children born to illegal parents that are draining our social services. All of this happening, so businesses can make a quick dollar. Meanwhile we have legal immigrants doing everything the right way, that have to wait, study, and work hard to earn the right to be citizens. I think the people against illegal immigration have a strong sense of right and wrong. I think this group knows what it is to work for what you earn, and that in doing so you build character. I think this group wants legal immigrants treated fairly. I think this group wants big business held accountable. Is that so wrong? "

Have you not ever thought that maybe some jobs won't hire you REGARDLESS of your legal status?? legal or illegal, many places wont hire you because either you didnt graduate or you've never been to school, which some people haven't, or dont have work experience? Now i know that it doesn't take a high school education to know how to clean toilets or prune a vine or even flip burgers, but some employers really value a good education. No, El Presidente will not take us back, why? well because theres nothing for us to go back for. Jobs down in mexico pay NOTHING... I once applied at a shop in Zamora, Michoacan, just to see what the pay is... 200 pesos a day, a day consisted of 7 hours. 200 pesos is roughly 20 dollars a day, 140 a week. Why do you think that illegals are ok with 7 or 8 bucks an hour? its WAY better than what they get down there... Id type more but im out of space. =] "
