1 p.m.Several Napa Valley Latino winemakers are preparing to meet and greet Mexican President Felipe Calderon at Robledo Family Winery in Sonoma County this afternoon. Calderon is scheduled to be at the winery as part of a tour of California that began last night and included a visit with Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger in Sacramento.

“The interest of the president is to meet with the wine producers,” said Alex Sotelo, owner and winemaker of Napa-based Alex Sotelo Cellars. “There’s a lot of interest in Mexican winemakers. Twenty years ago, there was nobody that would call themselves Mexican winemakers. Now we have more than 1,000 families that are making high-end wines in the Napa Valley.”
Sotelo is among that list of Latino winemakers who have carved themselves a slice of Napa’s wine industry and are proving that Latinos have what it takes to make wine.

“Ninety-five percent of the work in the vineyards is done by the Mexicans, very little is done on the other side of the vine,” Sotelo said. “This is pretty much a new movement that we are doing.”
Oscar Renteria, of Renteria Wines, said he is in awe that the president is taking time to visit with him and his peers, adding he hopes to chat with Calderon about golf, while sipping on some tequila.

When asked what else he would like to talk to the president about Renteria said “What does he think about his vino in California, tequila?”
Sotelo said if he gets the chance to speak with Calderon, he will ask about making it easier for Napa winemakers to export their wines into Mexico.

He also said he hopes to talk to Calderon about creating more job opportunities in Mexico so people there won’t have to immigrate to find work.

Renteria said he doesn’t know why Calderon would want to meet with Napa and Sonoma winemakers, but said that is might have something to do with the world-wide marketing savvy of Napa winemakers.

“There are things that he can learn,” Renteria said.

In Sacramento today, Calderon acknowledged tensions between the U.S. and Mexico over illegal immigration but stressed that both countries have an interest in ensuring their citizens can cross the border legally and safely.

Addressing a joint session of the California Legislature, Calderon said the economies of the two countries are interdependent. For that reason, there must be “shared responsibility” for immigration on both sides of the border.

“I know that immigration is a controversial issue today in this great nation. But I strongly believe that Mexican and Mexican-American workers are a large reason for the dynamic economy of California,” he said in prepared remarks. “Our nations will never find prosperity by closing their doors.”

After his address to California lawmakers, Calderon met privately with Schwarzenegger and his advisers on environmental and trade issues.

The governor and first lady Maria Shriver hosted a state luncheon for him before he left to meet with the vintners. Calderon is scheduled to fly to Los Angeles after his visit to Sonoma, where he will meet with Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa.

Calderon, who was making his first visit to the U.S. since winning office, said Mexico had taken steps to strengthen security at the border and improve its economy.

He said the government has stepped up law enforcement against drug traffickers and organized crime. Calderon cited the seizure of large amounts of cocaine and cash, which has driven up the price of drugs in America by nearly 50 percent last year.

" The Mexican government treats El Salvador citizens and Guatamalans like doggy doo-doo when people of those nationalities attempt to cross Mexico's southern border. "Illegal immigrants" from those countries are routinely frisked, robbed, incarcerated and worse, by Mexican Police with the encouragement of the Government. Why would Calderon visit Sonoma to talk with Mexican vineyard workers? Gee, I wonder. Perhaps to get a better lay out of the land that he is overtly and covertly encouraging his fellow Mexicans to overtake. His disdain and disrespect ("where ever there is a Mexican, there is Mexico")for our laws is disgusting, to say the least.

Why is it that everyone 'latino,' or 'mexican' must group identify? Though I'm not a huge fan of his, one rarely reads or hears Mondavi constantly refer to being Italian, of Italian heritage and adhering to Italian culture more closely than American heritage. Same with others of many and varied ethnic, national backgrounds. But, the southern denizens cannot seem to think of themselves as anything but American *(if citizens).

Group identity is the worse and most prevelant form of racism as it automatically excludes all other races and nationalities.

Go home, Calderone and take some of yours with you. "

I guess that means Mexico is responsible for flooding our nation with unskilled uneducated bodies and we are responsible for taking care of all their needs. His "solutions" will not benifit everyone as this nation will still remain a dumping ground for the Mexican citizens that cannot make ends meet there. It shouldn't be our problem. Let Mexico take care of Mexicans. We will struggle by somehow without them (dragging down our social services system). "

" Hey CollegeStudent: I nominate you to go back to Mexico and be that political force of change in that government. Are you aware that a Mexican child born in the United States cannot attend Mexican public schools if that family chooses to return to Mexico? Yet our system attempts to absorb anyone that manages to set foot in this country, legal or not. Open doors, Bull----! I have no problem with those who come to this country legally. I have no problem with legal temporary labor legally entering the country to do a job, then RETURN HOME. I have a MAJOR problem with Mexicans that come to this country illegally then demand that I learn their language. Every immigrant wave other than the Mexicans has ASSIMILATED, meaning they adopt the language and customs of this country. My wife is foreign born. Her English is not perfect. She struggles every day with this. But she does not demand the rest of the country learn her language. In fact, when we first got together, I asked that we only speak her language at home so that I can become more fluent in that language. Her response was “No. I live in America now. I need to learn English. That is the language of this country.” Mexicans, take note of my foreign born wife’s wise and thoughtful comments. "

" Naparian, I've traveled. I've spent months in Central & South America, I've been to the top of the Eiffel tower and through the mosque in Timbuktu. I enjoy & appreciate diversity, and Latin America is perhaps my favorite region to visit on the planet. But there is a difference between that and accepting every low-skilled illiterate that is driven to the US border by the Mexican government. It doesn't take an economic genius to see that illegal immigration depresses wages, lowering the standard of living, and creates divisions in our society (through lack of assimilation) when we should be coming together and looking past differences. Now, immigration difficulties are nothing new in the US (we went through similar rhetoric with Slavic coal miners in the turn of the century) but never before have we seen such blatant state-sponsored violation of our FEDERAL LAWS. We shouldn't be welcoming Calderon. We should be arresting him (or can we at least funnel arms to the Oaxacan protesters?)

I don't have a solution for dealing with the 11 million illegal immigrants that are here right now, but I do know that we need to start severely punishing those here who hire illegal immigrants and begin heavily taxing remittances to overseas locales so we can force the Mexican government's hand in actually working with us for a solution, rather than leaving them to exacerbate the problem. Calderon's government is as hypocritical as they come; treat Guatemalans and El Salvadorans (who are desperately poor even by Mexican standards) like subhuman garbage, but complain about the treatment their own undesireables receive here. Choke off one of Mexico's primary income streams and force their hand to cooperate for a real border solution. "

I have children who have looked for jobs such as some of the fast food resturaunts, but they are not hired there because an illegal-non english speaking person was. My children also can't be expected to work in an environment that they will not be able to understand emergency and safety instructions. I have to commute out of my community because the jobs that should be available at a livable wage are given to illegal immigrants at a non-livable wage. My husband is a second generation U.S. American. His grandparents immigrated LEGALLY from Italy. His grandparents spoke English to their children. My father-in-law only speaks English because his parents believed that since they chose to migrate here it was their responsibility to adapt to this country's practices and language. They also felt it was VERY disrespectful to fly the flag of another country in the country to which they chose to migrate LEGALLY to. We as legal U.S. citizens are asking nothing of immigrants that any other country would ask of immigrants to those countries. FOLLOW ALL OF OUR LAWS including the immigration process. "

Hispanics are now doctors, lawyers, politicians, engineers, architects, amongst other things. I would say that it's safe to say that Hispanic immigrants do have about as much vision and intelligence as the founding fathers of this great nation. Now seriously, unconcerned citizen, think for a second about the names of California’s biggest cities. San Francisco, San Diego, San Jose, Sacramento, Los Angeles. The rule of law prevents vigilante justice. Supporting the rule of law does not make you a racist, and it is dishonest to make that claim, no matter how subtly you try to sneak it in. Any legal immigrant, of any race or national origin, is welcome and I've helped many get a footing in America. You liberals, however, want to give illegals drivers licenses with no background checks, just to keep the rich supplied with cheap labor. Real classy. "

He's caught between a rock and a hard place because he's not skilled enough for jobs that do not require Spanish language skills, yet he's willing to work entry level jobs but cannot get hired. I really see a very serious trend of young, unskilled males unable to get entry level jobs because they are filled up with foreigners who can speak the native language of their country. These guys have been squeezed out of the job market in their own country because of the influx of foreigners unwilling to adapt to the culture. This is a very serious problem which we do not seem willing to address. Forcing this young man to become fluent in the native language of another country is very wrong. It takes several years to actually become fluent. "

I would assume Mexico, also has it's fair share of them. But I do not believe this issue is racially motivated. I believe the majority of the people against illegal immigration, are against it because it is illegal. They do not like business profitting off illegal labor at expense of jobs to citizens. Look in the restaurant industry, service jobs, labor jobs. Thirty years ago, most of these jobs were done by a legal workforce. This is no longer true. Identities are stolen, to obtain papers to allow them to work, where the employers check. Drug cartels are setting up operations in our country, with the money going back to Mexico. Our schools are suffering because of the language problem. We have a whole new generation of children born to illegal parents that are draining our social services. All of this happening, so businesses can make a quick dollar. Meanwhile we have legal immigrants doing everything the right way, that have to wait, study, and work hard to earn the right to be citizens. I think the people against illegal immigration have a strong sense of right and wrong. I think this group knows what it is to work for what you earn, and that in doing so you build character. I think this group wants legal immigrants treated fairly. I think this group wants big business held accountable. Is that so wrong? "
