Contractors board warns homeowners

Contractors State License Board investigators want to know if any Napa homeowners have been victimized by a man they say stole thousands of dollars from homeowners in several counties.
The Lincoln Police Department arrested Jonathan Aaron Teague, 36, on suspicion of stealing about $300,000 from homeowners in Napa, El Dorado, Yuba and Placer counties. The money was meant for home improvement projects.
Police say that Teague would take payments from homeowners and either do substandard work or no work at all. Police said that Teague would then disappear, leaving no contact information. In addition, the CSLB’s Statewide Investigative Fraud Team was investigating Teague for wrongfully using the legitimate license numbers of two different contracting companies, according to a CSLB press release.
Police officials caught up with Teague on Friday morning during a felony traffic stop. Officers found home-improvement contracts, drug pipes, four throwing knives and two other knives on Teague during the arrest according to the release.
Investigators urge anyone who has information about Teague or feel that they have been victimized to contact them at (916) 255-2924.
“Consumers must do their homework before hiring any contractor,” CSLB Registrar Steve Sands said. “Don’t assume that if they give you a license number that it is their license.”
Homeowners should ask all potential contractors to show their license and photo identification, then go online or call the CSLB’s automated phone system to verify their license. For additional tips visit www.cslb.ca.gov.
