“The Priests,” featuring the associate pastors of St. John the Baptist Catholic School, Father Sean Rogers and Father Abel Mena, took on a team of St. John’s eighth-grade boys and girls basketball players in “Mardi Gras Ball” on the Napa school’s playground on Tuesday.

The Priests won, 40-39.
The school’s pastor, Father Gordon Kalil, and a third-grade teacher, Sister Joyce Poeschl served as referees, donning whistles and bullhorns. The game was played in recognition of Catholic Schools Week, which was established more than 30 years ago by the National Catholic Education Association to celebrate Catholic education. Throughout the week of Jan. 27 to Feb. 2, the school thanked volunteers with treats, gave students extended recesses and thanked community organizations for their contributions. The fourth-graders welcomed Mayor Jill Techel to thank her for her service to the city. Parishioners were asked to choose a side and sponsor $1 per shot. The game also tied in the celebration of the 150th anniversary of St. John the Baptist Catholic Church.  Lianne Milton/Register photos
