9 a.m.The Interstate 80 off ramp onto westbound Jamieson Canyon Road leading to Napa County will be closed every night next week for construction, Caltrans said.

The closures will start Monday night and last through Saturday night, Caltrans said. On weeknights, the off ramp will be shut from 9 p.m. to 5 a.m. Saturday’s closure will be from 10 p.m. to 5 a.m.
A contractor will be installing a temporary concrete barrier in preparation for the construction of a $7 million truck climbing lane.

Traffic will be detoured to I-80’s Highway 37 exit in Vallejo, then back to Napa on Highway 29, Caltrans said. Eastbound traffic on Jamieson Canyon will not be affected.
Caltrans is building a 1.2-mile truck climbing lane from the interstate to the top of the grade west of Red Top Road. Construction will take a year.

The new lane should help to prevent rush hour traffic from backing up onto the interstate, Caltrans said.
Plans are underway to double Jamieson Canyon/Highway 12 from two to four lanes from I-80 to Highway 29. This project, estimated to cost $139 million, is several years away from starting construction.

" I'm not so sure a so called truck climbing lane is going to work.It will be going from two lanes to one, just like the eastbound direction in the afternoon.I think it will be money wasted again. "

" I fear an increase in head-on collisions at the point where the truck lane ends with cars not wanting to be stuck behind the slow-moving trucks will be trying to squeeze past them. "

" That's why you put the concrete barrier there, napkin. The truck lane will be a big help and not cost a lot (most bang for the buck). The only thing worse than being stuck in bumper to bumper traffic on Jamieson is when there is an open road with no traffic, and you are stuck behind a slow, overloaded truck that missed a gear going up the grade and has to go 15 mph all the way to the Napa county line... " My truck driver husband loves the idea of a truck lane. He thinks it will work great! "

" I agree. I'm not seeing a solid solution that justifies the additional costs. This project alone will take a year to complete. By that time the new construction will be close to starting and will most likely undo all that has been done simply wasting money. "
