A Napa woman suffered major injuries early Sunday evening when she was struck by a suspected drunk driver.

Lilian Clark, 39, was pinned between the rear bumper of her car and a 1990 Plymouth driven by Francisco Pacheco, 24, of Napa. He fled the scene, but was arrested on suspicion of felony drunk driving a short time later.
Clark suffered severe injuries to her lower legs, which may result in amputation, according to the California Highway Patrol.

The accident happened around 6:30 p.m. on South Terrace Drive, north of Shetler Avenue.
Clark was standing at the rear of her vehicle, which was parked in the middle of the road.

“We don’t know if she was getting something out her trunk or was behind her car for some other reason,” CHP Officer Jaret Paulson said.
Pacheco drove his car into the rear of Clark’s vehicle, pinning her legs between the two vehicles, CHP said.

“Mr. Pacheco put his car into reverse and fled the scene,” Paulson said.

Witnesses were able to provide CHP with a description and license plate number of Pacheco’s vehicle, which led to his quick capture and arrest.

Clark was taken to Queen of the Valley Medical Center where she is in critical condition, according to a hospital spokeswoman.

Pacheco was booked into the county jail on felony DUI, hit and run and several other traffic violations and also on violation of probation.

" Why was her car in the middle of the road or was that an editing error ??

I hope they can save her legs and that Mr Pacheco spends a lil time in jail for his actions. Drunk drivers are high on my list of not liked people. "

" Yeah, someone needs to elaborate on the car in the middle of the road part. That just sounds so very wrong.Hopefully he had insurance. Probably not, but lets hope so. "

" This happened in front of my house. I also know her ex husband. For one this happened last night at the end of the super bowl( there was 6 mins left in the 4th) she was picking up her kids and because of about three house's that have to many cars(7 to 8 per house) there was no parking. She had her hazard lights on and she was loading things in the trunk. The driver was speeding doing about 50 mph witch is a big problem on so terrace dr. He drove around the corner to his house when two of the kids from accross the went after him because thay heard it. They also said he looked very drunk and was passing out while in cuffs waiting for CHP. I know this because I was on of the first peole to hear and see what happened. "

" My prayers go out to Lilian Clark and I truly hope that she fully recovers from this terrible accident. I also hope that Mr. Pacheco gets a long jail or prison sentence for this because he deserves it. The thing that bothers me however is how people are quick to assume that Mr. Pacheco has no insurance because he has a hispanic last name. I am hispanic and I have car insurance and so does the rest of my family. So please people, lets not turn this terrible accident into a race or illegal immigration issue. "

Tiredofcomplainingnapkins wrote on Feb 4, 2008 2:15 PM:

" TO paisano,

I never made a distinction between his last name and his race and wether he had insurance. I'm hispanic as well and I thought it was a logically good question, anyone that runs from an accident usually doesn't have insurance, I don't know where race came into this "

Paisano wrote on Feb 4, 2008 2:49 PM:

" To Tiredofcomplainingnapkins, You're correct, I made an assumption without fully understanding what you meant about Mr. Pacheco having insurance. Nobody has turned this terrible incident into a race issue except for me. However, have you stopped to think that perhaps Mr. Pacheco does have insurance but decided to leave the scene of the accident because he was intoxicated. "

" To paisano

I was just making a point that he shouldn't have been driving if he didn't have insurance. And he better have it or else Mrs. Clark is going to be in for a long painful rehabilitation as well as huge medical bills, hopefully he had insurance so she will be covered by his insurance because he was at fault. I'm just saying he better have had insurance "

Help out in whatever way possible, even a prayer and everyday remember how lucky we each are. "

I know what happened and if he isn't locked up for a long time there's something really wrong with this world!!! I hope everybody really understands how fast something can change ur life. she was pretty much walking to her car and now her and her familys lifes are going to be very different! The car wasn't insured so the family is looking at coming out of there own pocket. So if there anything you can do to help them even if its just keeping them in your paryers I know they would really appreciate it! And I also wanted to say thank you to the sheriffs office on behalf of everybody that tryed to help we were very greatful how fast they showed up and got everything under control! "

This is a very poor, hardworking family. There is no insurance for Lillie and Pacheco is uninsured. Gabriella's husband died of cancer 2 months ago and Lillie helped care for him over the last month when he was in hospice care. She is a kind, hardworking mother who loves her family and helps others.

" I cant help but see comments posted steriotyping individuals and it is starting to get absurd. This is a story where a woman gets hit by a car and somehow we are analyzing the number of insured hispanics vs whites.?? If you have a racial predudice there are pleany of chatrooms to speak with. It is sad to see that these people feel so strongly about race issues that every story written leads to a comment on race "

" This guy deserves no leniency whatsoever! Anyone who can hurt someone so badly and just drive off, whether drunk or not, should have the book thrown at them. With God's grace, Ms. Clark will pull through this and hopefully with her legs intact, but if she doesn't, he will also be up for murder. I just pray that with the love and support of her family and friends that she does and that no matter what happens, he is taken off the streets for many years to come. This people, is the reason why we have drunk driving laws, to atleast try and keep our roads safe from people like him. "

The Napa Valley Register is not a government… they are not oppressing your speech/thought – and they are far from a joke. In fact they are giving you a platform regardless of your opinion. Although they don’t always prevent the public from putting in writing absurd remarks that should be held, they do a great job at remaining unbiased and professional; they own the publication and can publish WHATEVER they feel is appropriate.

enapa, why don’t you create your own blog and publish everything and anything you want to? You can do this in many publically available services (e.g., Blogspot by Google) and then all your friends can enjoy your intelligence and you’ll be able to use profanity to heart’s content! "

" I have read the comments, and implore the gracious people of Napa to stop making this a racial incident. If you wish to vent anger, let’s do something to help this lovely family. Let’s get together to educate everyone on driving laws, insurance and, specifically, the deadly effects of alcohol. It would also be helpful to help find a way to effectively slow the traffic on So. Terrance and on other quiet neighborhood streets. Lilly and her family are my neighbors, and I care about the family deeply. I had the unfortunate experience of being at the scene of this horrible, life changing incident, and am intimately aware of just what happened. This incident has gravely impacted the lives of a beautiful young woman and her family -- financially and especially emotionally. It has also impacted the lives of a close knit So. Terrace community. While I do not understand how someone could so gravely injure another human being and just leave, this fact and this horrible incident is something that I and everyone in this community has to live with every day for the rest of our lives. Huge thanks to the young man and woman who acted so quickly and helped in the apprehension of the suspect and the other young man who joined them, to the Napa Sheriffs Department for their quick response in apprehending the suspect; to the Napa Paramedics for their response and care in helping the victim; and to the Napa Police and Fire Department for their response and investigation. If you would like to help out with this airfare to bring Lillie's mother to Napa to care for her please stop by The Mane Place, (1256 Trancas St,(707) 252-4676). This shouldn'b be racially peppered conversation, folks, it's a horrific tragedy made up of poor judgment and unfortunate timing. A very (VERY) similar incident happened last year in Los Gatos, I only think the driver didn't flee the scene.

All the best to Ms Clark on her recovery and to her children/family for their strength and emotional recovery. "

" A number of years ago now I remember that the NVR did an article on Latino culture in Napa and alcohol and I was stunned and without word when I saw the photograph of these young women pouring alcohol over this one Latino man's grave as, according to their believe system, this would give him something more to drink in the after life and keep him happy as he died intoxicated. These are deep and serious thinking errors and distortions that need to be discussed and talked about if there is to be any peace with this toxic issue. I urge the NVR to delve more deeply into this strange relationship with alcohol and Latino culture. There is enough craziness to go around for everytone in America. I just deeply fear these people or any social group on alcohol as it cuts across all social groups, professions ( yes police too ) and we do not talk about it. I was almost hit head on by such a driver on H-29 about one month ago on a very lazy and light Sunday afternoon at 4 pm. I am still shaken by the experience as I do not drink alcohol and cannot understand all of this. "
