A Napa grandmother, her two grandchildren and her boyfriend were killed in a house fire early Monday morning.

The blaze started around 5 a.m. in the 1400 block of Vale Avenue, in the Alta Heights area of east Napa.
Aurora Castanon, 58, Eutimio Torres, 37, Matthew Castanon, 12, and Giovanni Mendez, 4, were found unconscious at the scene.

All but Matthew were pronounced dead at the fire. The boy was pulled from the burning home and paramedics administered CPR while he was rushed to the hospital. He was taken to Queen of the Valley Medical Center and was pronounced dead on arrival.
The cause of the fire remains under investigation.

For Norma Mendez, the incident is an unspeakable tragedy. She lost her mother and two children.
On Monday afternoon, Mendez visited the scene of the blaze. Escorted by a Napa fire chaplain and a longtime friend, the grief-stricken woman roamed the fire-gutted living room and bedroom where her loved ones perished.

Family members waited for her outside. Crying, they held each other in their grief.

Mendez sat on the brick wall in front of the house, sobbing uncontrollably as Napa Fire and Police Chaplain Lee Shaw did his best to console her.

“My kids were there yesterday. They wanted to spend the night with her,” she said, referring to Aurora Castanon. “I was going to pick them up this morning and take them to school.

“Then around 5:30 a.m., a neighbor came to my house and said something tragic had happened. My boys loved to stay at their grandmother’s. My little Giovanni loved his Spiderman outfit. He wore it everywhere.”

Mendez also has a 2-year-old son, Alvaro. “I don’t think he knows what has happened. But I have to stay strong for him,” she said.

Castanon’s grandchildren stayed with her from time to time, according to neighbors. Matthew was a student at Alta Heights Elementary School.

Fire investigators said the home has a smoke detector. But as of early Monday, they could not confirm if the detector was working.

All of the victims were found in the same bedroom.

“The victims were in different places in the room. We don’t know if they were all in the bedroom when it started of if they gathered in there after the fire started,” said Napa Fire Capt. Scott Sedgley. The bedroom is adjacent to the living room, where the fire started and where the majority of fire damage occurred.

The victims most likely died of smoke inhalation, Sedgley said. “Smoke inhalation can knock a person out in seconds.”

At this point, fire officials do not know the fire’s cause, but do not suspect foul play.

The Napa/Solano Counties Arson Task Force was on scene most of the day, looking for clues on how the fire started, Napa Fire Capt. Jim Pope said.

Matthew’s father arrived in the early afternoon.

Pope said Aurora Castanon still had her Christmas tree. “And that it was in the room where the fire started.”

The blackened trunk of the tree rested against a neighbor’s fence.

A neighbor, who did not give her name, said Aurora Castanon had lived in the house for about 15 years.

“She was a professional house cleaner. I talked to her yesterday. She told me she has been really cold the past few weeks because her heater hasn’t worked for about three years,” the woman said. “I used to see her all the time and we would chat. I just feel numb.”

A neighbor across the street said Matthew was his stepson’s friend.

“They used to play together all the time. Her grandkids (spent) the night very frequently,” the neighbor said. “(Aurora) was a really nice person. A great neighbor. They were good people.

“I was sleeping when I heard what sounded like something hitting the side of the house. I got up and saw a neighbor banging on the door (of the house that was on fire.) It was then I could see the flames shooting out from the front windows,” he said. “This is just a terrible tragedy. I can’t believe it.”

While fires at homes occur with regularity, this is the first local fire in many years that took such a human toll. In January of 1999, a house fire on Yajome Street killed a Napa mother, her 2-year-old daughter and her 5-week-old nephew.

" this is very sad,... my brother lives across the way from them and was not able to leave his driveway today because he was blocked in. He didn't know they had passed away until he was here and saw it on the news. He knew the children were the woman's grand children and is just very sad at the loss, stating she was very friendly and kind. We're just praying for the family and the neighbors. "

" My heart goes out to the family as well. This is really terrible. What struck me most was the comment that Ms. Castanon had said how cold it had been as her heater hasn't worked for three years. We cannot bring them back. We can work as a community to ensure that there are no further deaths becuase people are trying to stay warm. How many homes in Napa are without heat? Can the community come together to buy safe space heaters for every home that is without sufficient heating? Or can local businesses donate time to repair heaters that are not working in those homes? My hope is that something good can come from this. For now, I'm just filled with grief for the family. We will pray that God is with you. "

" I agree, nothing will bring back these precious lives, but we all need to work together and help those who are in need. I feel such tremendous sorrow for these children. I have 5 of my own and worry about them being warm enough at night. In tears as I am typing, I hope one family who needs it will learn from this and just ask for help if needed. God bless those 2 little boys. The 2 adults deserve our condolences also, they too, were human lives. Please hug your kids and be kind to others! "

" My heart goes out to the families of this devastating fire this morning. May the Lord watch over them. They must of all slept together to stay warm. I agree that to go 3 years without heat should not have happened. If they were renting the landlord should have been contacted. Many of those homes in that area had wall heaters which are no longer safe. "

RenoDeano wrote on Feb 4, 2008 1:47 PM:

" God was evidently watching over the neighbors and their property, not the young children that died. Oh, I forgot, he (God) wanted them for some reason! At least they will be safe, I think? Any loss of young innocent lives is very sad. "

He was going to go to Mexico this week, because his parent's and my grandparents were going to have a 50th anniversary. Now it is not sure what is going to happen. The family is going through a rough time right now. God only knows why he wanted them by his side. R.I.P. Uncle Timo and the rest!

Years ago the combustion chamber was cracked in my fathers wall furnace and it was a miracal we found it. Turns out this is not uncommon. People just dont know! Monoxide detectors are just as important as smoke detectors. Its just an outrage when we have to choose which selected items we can afford to install to protect our families. "

" This is tragic. Has anyone thought about the responsibility of the landlord in this matter? I don't personally know rental laws...but to not have heat for a tenant for over three years cannot be acceptable. In addition, is the owner not responsible to have fire detectors in the house? "

" to my two cents..... yes the landlord was aware of the heating situation. I know this because my brother is her neighbor and knew of this to be true. she couldn't afford to have her rent raised if her heater was fixed. so there, I said it. don't know if the moderator will pass this thru tho. perhaps moderator will being as the name of the landlord hasn't been disclosed. "

napanancy2 wrote on Feb 5, 2008 10:18 AM:

" I think that we need to have stricter laws for landlords. so this type of thing doesnt happen again. no working heat fro 3 years or working smoke detector. This could have been prevented. perhaps if the landlord knew he could loose everything he would have repsonded to habitability issues sooner. no that this would bring norma's children or mother back but perhaps with stricter laws this would never happen agian. "

Napkin wrote on Feb 5, 2008 10:52 AM:

" Just an observation and this really doesn't have anything to do with this awful tragedy...but why do you all assume that they were renters and not homeowners? And why do you assume that they were in need of financial aid? Could it be because of their Hispanic surnames? If she was a renter, the landlord absolutely by law must provide a habitable living environment (ie. heat, water, plumbing, etc). If she was a homeowner and also low-income, there are many programs available to assist. Even PG&E offers assistance to low-income people. "

" Your Napa City Firefighters too would like to extend their deepest thoughts and prayers to the family and friends of the Vale fire victims. Our little community has been fortunate enough not to have many of these tragedies but when they happen they reiterate how important smoke detectors are. Please help us spread the word about how important it is for all homes to have these and for those that are less fortunate there is a smoke detector program already in existence and to contact Fire Prevention for further information. For those that have smoke detectors don’t forget to change batteries with the clock change and test them once a month. "

" To add my two cents to this very heart breaking and tragic incident, I want it to be known that the landlords were there 2 weeks ago fixing a water leak, nothing was said about no heat for 3 years. The house did have smoke detectors, but it is the tenants responsibility to keep batteries in them and to test them to make sure they are working correctly. My heart goes out to this family, what a heart breaking loss! They are all in my prayers and may they rest in peace! "

" This is a very tragic event and my heart goes out to this family. What bothers me most is that this was a preventable tragedy and one that should never happen. Many of you noted that your children attended school with Matthew. You same folks and many others should also know that each year the Fire Department provides fire and life safety programs in our elementary schools. They stress the importance of having "working" smoke detectors and escape plans. The department also has a program in place to provide free smoke detectors to those in need. Please ask your children if they have had this presentation at their school. If not, I encourage you to approach the Principal and ask when he/she has it scheduled. Smoke detectors and escape plans do save lives! "

" Sometimes people are afraid to complain about a problem they are having to their landlord, thinking that if they are a quiet non-cmplaining tenent they increase their chances of long-term renting or avoiding rental price increases. Landlords are not psychic, talk to them. MOst are glad to make sure things are ok! As far as smoke detectors, most people don't change their batteries enough or they take them down because of inconveinience such as going off while cooking or fireplace fires. Our hallway smoke detector was disconnected until this incident because we took it down when our oven set it off, I will NEVER take it down again! "
