SANTA CLARA — Trent Baalke, a regional scout for the San Francisco 49ers, was named the club’s director of player personnel on Monday.
San Francisco also hired former Baltimore Ravens assistant Tony Nathan as its running backs coach.

Baalke has been a 49ers scout for three seasons since leaving the Washington Redskins, where he was the college scouting coordinator. He will oversee San Francisco’s college and pro personnel departments in his new job under general manager Scot McCloughan, who was promoted last month to a nominal position of authority over coach Mike Nolan.
Nathan played nine NFL seasons as a running back in Miami before a stint on the Dolphins’ coaching staff from 1988-95. He also has coached at Tampa Bay (1996-01), Florida International (2003-05) and Baltimore. He was the Ravens’ running backs coach the last two seasons.
