NOTES AND QUOTES for a Tuesday in the Napa Valley:

John Boyett, a multiple-position player for CIF Sac-Joaquin Section Division I champion Napa High School last year, was named Second Team Defense by EA SPORTS on its seventh annual All-American High School Football Team.
Boyett was named to the national team as a defensive back. He played safety and cornerback on the Indians’ 13-1 team, which won the Monticello Empire League title and beat four straight teams in the playoffs. He was also a finalist for the “Mr. Football” award in the state by Cal-HiSports.com.

He excelled offensively as Napa’s quarterback, rushing for 1,527 yards and 20 touchdowns and passing for 1,827 yards and 19 TDs.
Boyett graduated in December and is already enrolled as a scholarship athlete at the University of Oregon.

The annual EA SPORTS All-American Team is selected by the editors of Student Sports, which have compiled national rankings in numerous sports for more than 15 years. The teams also are chosen after almost all of the numerous All-State teams around the country have been compiled and is usually released just before national letter-of-intent signing day, which takes place on Wednesday.
Julian Szmidt, a Vintage High coach who also coaches for the Napa Valley Water Polo organization, has been named as the Central California Zone Youth girls head coach for his second three-year term. He will organize and oversee the selection of 14 players — born in 1993 or later — from the over 150 players who will try out in three different locations (Sacramento, Modesto and Clovis).

During the last three-year term, Szmidt directed a coaching staff that led the CCZ to a sixth-place finish in the National Zone Championships in 2005, which were held in Davis, against 14 Zone teams. It was the highest placing of any CCZ team in its history.

Szmidt followed that up with a second-place finish in 2006, again in Davis, and a fourth-place finish after losing to eventual champion Pacific Zone in the semifinals.

Three players from both the 2006 and 2007 teams made the national youth team. Two players from the 2005 team were also selected.

These national teams went on to dominate play in the Pan-Am and Pan-Pacific Youth Championships.

Vintage senior Sarah Saunders has played on the Central Cal Zone Youth team.

“It is an honor to be able to work with these highly motivated and talented athletes as well as the knowledgeable coaches who volunteer their time,” said Szmidt.

Vallejo native and Cleveland Indians ace C.C. Sabathia, the American League Cy Young Award winner, was in Guthrie, Okla., last week to receive the 2007 Warren Spahn Award. It’s presented annually to baseball’s best left-handed pitcher by the Oklahoma Sports Museum

Sabathia, a Vallejo High graduate, went 19-9 last season and achieved career bests in wins, ERA (3.21) and strikeouts (209). He also led the major leagues in innings pitched (241).

Sabathia and Hall of Famer Gaylord Perry (1972) are the only Cleveland pitchers to win the Cy Young Award.

Pitchers and catchers report to Cleveland’s spring training camp in Winter Haven, Fla., on Feb. 14.

Defensive end Fred Dean, a four-time Pro Bowl selection and one of the NFL’s most feared pass rushers during his 11-season career with the San Diego Chargers and San Francisco 49ers, was elected Saturday to the Pro Football Hall of Fame.

The Class of 2008 enshrinees includes cornerback Darrell Green, wide receiver Art Monk, cornerback Emmitt Thomas, linebacker Andre Tippett, and tackle Gary Zimmerman. The newest members of the Hall were selected from a list of 17 finalists.

Dean played for the 49ers from 1981 to 1985.

The 2008 class will increase to 247 the number of all-time greats permanently honored in the Pro Football Hall of Fame. The enshrinement ceremonies will take place at the Pro Football Hall of Fame in Canton, Ohio on August 2. It will be televised by both ESPN and the NFL Network.

The annual NFL Hall of Fame Game will be played on August 3 and broadcast by NBC. Teams have not yet been announced.
