Remembering Bobby Kennedy's election-night assassination

Every election night, when I watch the coverage of the celebrations of the victors and the subdued gatherings of the losers, I’m reminded of one of the saddest moments in election night history.

We’re young, we vote, we will be heard

In Napa and beyond, a movement is growing; the youth vote machine is starting to awake. 2008 is the year of the young voter, and my generation is taking action.

Support students, ‘yes’ on Measure L

Over the past two months, you may have received a phone call or had someone leave a pamphlet on your door asking for your support for Measure L. You may have wondered who these individuals were on the other side of the phone and going door-to-door in your neighborhoods.

Obama, the best hope for change

President Bush has proposed a budget that cuts funding for teaching hospitals, freezes funding for medical research, and increases military spending by $35 billion. These priorities are indicative of a way of thinking that is outmoded and dangerous. The party that espouses “small government” has increased the national debt from $5.77 trillion near the end of Mr. Bush’s first year in office to an estimated $9.6 trillion by the end of his second term. Much of this debt has been driven by the cost of the Iraq war.

Obama and the Latino vote

During the past couple of weeks, I have listened and read the news surrounding the upcoming primary elections in California. I have been astounded by responses that Barack Obama, an African-American candidate, has received from both black and white people throughout the country. Sadly, I have noticed that his most daunting struggle in California may be convincing Latino voters that he is a viable candidate worthy of the nomination.

An honest and accurate count

In response to the article in the Napa Valley Register (“Switch from e-voting may slow results for weeks,” Feb. 1), our Napa County Registrar of Voters John Tuteur once again continues to lament and whine of the eminent “gloom and doom” created by Secretary of State Bowen’s decertification of Napa County’s electronic voting machines.

The powers of the presidency

It is suggested that in the “Our View” section of the editorial page you list the actual powers of the presidency of the United States.
