Napa County residents have contributed more than $230,000 to the candidates running for president in 2008, according to recent campaign finance reports filed with the Federal Election Commission.

The FEC filings tally donations of $200 or more made by Dec. 31, 2007.
Presidential Democratic candidate Sen. Hillary Clinton, D-N.Y., received $111,000 from residents with addresses in Napa, Angwin, St. Helena, Yountville, Calistoga and American Canyon — more than any other presidential hopeful raised in the county, according to the FEC filings. The FEC filings do not include money raised during former President Bill Clinton’s Jan. 16 visit to Napa and Rutherford.

Napa County donors also gave Clinton rival Sen. Barack Obama, D-Ill., close to $59,000 in 2007, FEC records show. Former Sen. John Edwards, who withdrew from the race last week, raised about $22,500 from Napa County residents, according to the filings.
Republican front-runners Sen. John McCain, R-Ariz., and former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney also received financial support from Napa County residents in 2007.

However, Rudy Giuliani, the former New York City mayor who made an appearance in Yountville in September, raised the most money here.
McCain received about $13,500, while Romney accepted approximately $22,000, the FEC filings indicate. Giuliani, who dropped out of the race last week, received $39,500, according to the FEC.

Rep. Ron Paul, R-Texas, raised more than $9,000 here in 2007. Another Republican presidential hopeful, Mike Huckabee, a former Arkansas Governor, received only $250 from county residents in 2007, according to the campaign records.

Nationwide, Clinton and Obama raised more than $100 million each in 2007, while McCain and Romney received $41 million and $88 million, respectively.

However, millions more may have been raised in January alone.

Campaign aides for Obama last week announced that the Illinois senator raised another $32 million in January.

Under federal law, individual contributors can give up to $2,300 per election. The vast majority of donations from Napa County were less than $2,300 and came primarily from Napa. Donors include vintners, doctors, lawyers and teachers.

According to the FEC records, major Napa County donors to Clinton include Bruce and Lizabeth Boulware of Napa; C. Paul Johnson of Napa; Louis Logouri Jr. of Napa; Helaine Katz of St. Helena; and Richard and Sue Wollack of St. Helena.

Big donors to Obama include Monene and Richard Bradley of St. Helena and Bruce Bainum of Angwin.

Giuliani’s major financial supporters here include Joseph Barletta of Napa and Carolyn Roberts.

" Unfortunately for Measure L the majority of its donations are from out of town businesses who have or will again profit from their investments in Measure N and L. Almost no locals have donated to L, meaning - people who supposedly support our schools in Napa Valley are not voting with their check books. "
