A fire destroyed a home off Highway 29 south of Rutherford on Wednesday.
The 4,000-square-foot residence in the 1300 block of Manley Lane was completely engulfed when firefighters arrived on scene around 11 a.m., Wednesday. No one was hurt. The loss is estimated around $750,000.
The cause of the fire is under investigation, Napa County Fire Battalion Chief David Shew said.
The home, which sits in the middle of a vineyard, is used as second residence by the owner.
The owner, Robert Greer, arrived on the scene while the house was still burning.
“He said no one had been at the house for several days. So, there hadn’t been a fire in the fireplace or anything like that,” Shew said.
Shew said the blaze started in the front part of the house and spread throughout the rest of the residence. The house received major smoke and fire damage, but the most heavy damage was where the fire started, he said. “The roof caved in at that location.”
Because the house was so heavily charged with smoke when firefighters arrived, they were not able to save much of the belongings, Shew said.
The smoke was so thick that it was visible on Highway 29. A truck driver on the highway called 911.
The fire was contained by about 12:30 p.m., but firefighters remained and mopped up for several hours.
